I read Pollan’s book when it came out and this mention is making me consider a re-read, for all the bits about rigid behaviors and pattern breaking. But this reads as more of a critique of the author and his place in society, as an old white guy of a certain socio-economic status. I think the book deserves better than that, as an exploration and historical overview of psychoactive substances that not all of us know about. Some of my earlier reading has stayed with me, I realize, as some of the ideas and experiences he wrote about bubble up.

Are we better off for having this book by a well-known writer in the marketplace? Or does he somehow spoil the potential power of his message by being an old white guy of a certain socio-economic status? If the argument is that there should be a better understanding and more widespread availably of these substances as part of an overall mental health regimen, I’m not seeing it as such: I am seeing a straw man version of Pollan denying that to people who aren’t him.
