Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Geekwire: Amazon Looking at Downtown Property

Amazon.com is reportedly looking to expand, according to Geekwire via Bloomberg News.

According to Bloomberg News, Amazon.com is considering the purchase of a portion of a 12-acre parcel in downtown Seattle now owned by Clise Properties. Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources, said that the online retailer is in talks to buy a portion of the parcel which sits between downtown Seattle and the company’s new headquarters in the South Lake Union neighborhood.

    Fantastic–more Seattle jobs.

Would this mess up Clise’s plans for selling the chunk of land to a developer to build mega-project along the lines of Rockefeller Center? I continue to dream of that (and of it spurring some sort of real investment in/attention to the boondoggle that is transit from LQA/SLU to Cap Hill — the 8 bus is breaking my spirit).

Does Vulcan still need that upzone if Amazon buys their own property?

  • Norge

Vulcan’s not toing to give away an upzone.  That was just the start of upzones in Seattle.  You know the Mayor nor City Council can turn down the dreams of a developer.

Mayor McDope is definitely behind this.  Next up for the Jeff Bozos empire will be bike paths for the cyclistas displacing parking, pot dispensaries, more pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, and more hipsterurbanistayuppsteriffics walking around for me to run over in my big truck.  It’s pathetic, a travesty, a miscarriage of justice.  This makes me so mad I think I might poop myself.  Maybe I just did.

Shouldn’t you be all over this? Libertarian boy makes good, and whatnot? Although I have to say, I love how you ran the gamut from lazy hipster liberals to libertarian bashing in 5 sentences…

  • obvious question

where is there a 12 acre property?

Nobody ever accused me of making sense or using too much logic.  Grease your fixie chain with that, smugsters.

Wouldn’t it have been great if Seattle voters had voted for the 60 acre Commons Park back in ’95.  But no!  It was an optimistic project for a cynical time. Having said that, Amazon will have lots of space to work with and I do hope that they devote an impressive amount of sq. footage to a great public space. A public space that fronts on Westlake with a SLUT stop and a place where PEOPLE will want to hang out, play with their kids and walk their dogs. This neighborhood and the city in general really need spaces like that, and having a space like that as part of the new Amazon World Headquarters, and just down the street from the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation Headquarters… would be really, really cool. Dont’ya  think, Huh ?
