Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Kline Says Backpage Bill Needs To Be “Bomb Proof”

Any legislation against websites like Backpage.com needs to be “bomb-proof,”  Sen. Adam Kline (D-37, S. Seattle) told the Senate Judiciary Committee at a hearing Friday afternoon.

The committee waded through a package of bills intended to curb underage sex trafficking in Washington, but the legislation proposed by Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles—which would force sites like Backpage.com to check IDs in person for all escort ads—was the hot topic today at the committee meeting.

Both Mayor Mike McGinn and City Council member Tim Burgess (who have been at the forefront of the issue in Seattle) testified today. Burgess also released a report on three-and-a-half years of King County prosecution data, which found that 67 people “victimized more than 78 girls and women in King County.” Two thirds of those victims were juveniles, with a “sizable number” of them between 13 and 15 years old, according to Burgess.

McGinn and Burgess were joined by Assistant Seattle Police Chief Jim Pugel, Port Commissioner Gael Tarleton, King County prosecutors, religious leaders, SeaTac Police Department officers and representatives from the King County Sheriff’s office and staffers from social service agencies all showed up to voice support for the Kohl-Welles bill.

“I don’t know that we can ever end sin, but we can certainly try.”—Sen. Adam Kline

The biggest question looming over the legislative crackdown on escort ads is whether it would stand up to what Kline, who chairs the Judiciary Committee, called “inevitable litigation.” Legal issues involving protections for media advertising complicate the otherwise seemingly black and white issue of fighting child exploitation online.

Backpage’s parent company, Village Voice Media, has defended the site—which has been linked to the sexual exploitation of children—defending its escort ads as a First Amendment issue. (They make $20 million annually off the site.)

The mother of a young woman who was pimped out on Backpage.com offered a rejoinder to concerns about suppression of free speech at today’s hearing: “Whose voice are we protecting? Are we protecting the abuser? Are we protecting the buyer? Are we protecting the website that makes millions?” She added “I have a daughter that was convicted on prostitution charges at the age of 15. My entire family has been victimized.”

Kline closed today’s meeting saying ”I don’t know that we can ever end sin, but we can certainly try.”

Remember when we solved this years ago by entirely removing the ads from craigslist? Oh, nevermind.

It’s the criminals, stupid. It’s not backpage, cell phone providers, hotel operators, or anyone else. You don’t have to be a member of the ACLU to see the inherent problems a mile away.

No doubt, it’s the criminals and their ‘pimp culture’ which so few of our leaders are willing to criticize:

    From Investigate West:

“…..the majority of child victims are African American females, at an average age of 14 or 15. The majority of pimps are also African American, some driven by gang involvement, others by greed or by a push to enter the family business. Traffickers tend to be involved with drugs, guns or other illicit activity. They sell sex with children online, in brothels, through strip clubs, lingerie shops and other venues.”

Just because criminals will always find a way to commit crimes doesn’t mean we need to make it easy for them.

The issue is not ending sin.  The issue is ending assault.

it’d be nice to learn what the first amendment issues are, how kline intends to get around them, and what precedent this would set for regulation of other media, such as internet, in areas where the concerns are not child prostitution and pimping but other crimes such as terrorism, fraud, things that poke our buttons the other way if you know what I mean.  It’s fundamentally weak to simply note there are legal issues aplenty then just duck them with an emotive quote as if to make the first amendment issues just go away; it’s the rhetorical techique of yelling “you just don’t understand!” and walking out of the room.
    1. what is the first amendment problem kline is worried about. 2. how is he proposing to deal with it.  3. will this set precedent progressives don’t like in other areas?
ironically yesterday the post was about e verify noting that’s ID checking there is (“some say”) a horrible intrusion into first amendment, also it “just won’t work” etc etc. The First Amendment does not deserve tabloid type  treatment.

  • Go ‘way, ‘batin’

“I know mom! I’ll sit in your basement and paste the same inane racist quote every day. That will get back at those black pimps.”

“What? Mooooooom! I can’t go look for a job today. It’s Saturday! And I have to copy-paste my black pimp thing. If I don’t paste it enough I’ll never be important on the Internet.  Hey, ma, did you wash Hitler underoos?”

What a joke! It never ceases to amaze me the degree to which “progressives” here have this utterly addictive need to use the legislative process to enact symbolic totems to their Goodness. I say “addiction,” because they’re willing to erect these totems even when it’s clear that doing so will violate other “principles” they’ve claimed to hold dear.

The Backpages jihad is just another sexual witch hunt, but this time the liberals found one they can join. What used to be prostitution, the world’s oldest profession, has now been relabeled “human traffickin,” and something the “progressives” can score cheap points by appearing to fight. Best part, of course, is that, given the “oldest profession” part, now the liberals get to have their share of the perpetual witch hunt.

See, once Backpages has been beaten into submission, something else will arise. It always does, because we are talking about the world’s oldest profession. Little matter that, in going after it, you’ve trampled on all kinds of freedoms. What’s freedom compared to a few cheap points in this or that election?

And then there are the other uses of sexual witch hunts.

In the case of Backpages, we have a highly unpopular Mayor Michael McDope using this particular target as a proxy for his harshest journalistic critic, the Seattle Weekly. The Weekly is owned by the Village Voice, which also owns Backpages. The mayor joined the torch brigade at the point when his popularity his 23%, partly because the Weekly helped paint him as the hapless, lying buffoon that he is. Revenge was in order.

The other “progressives,” looking for a way to lick McDope’s loafers without seeming to, jumped on the bandwagon. This included Jonah Spangenthal Lee, now of Publicola. Just before he merged his Seattle Crime Blog with Publicola, Jonah hopped on McDope’s bandwagon. He even tried to float the lie that the Seattle Weekly hadn’t been critical of McDope before he joined the crusade.

Bottom line: Seattle’s “progressives,” both at Publicola and The Stranger, are perfectly willing to join their beloved mayor’s sexual witch hunt against his sharpest critic, the Seattle Weekly,. Just as they, in the end, don’t object to regressive taxation as long as the proceeds fund their toys or the effects advance their social control agenda, the “progressives” are perfectly willing to throw virogous, independent journalism and journalists under the bus.

Ah, nothing like a good juicy sex scandal, eh Seattle Smugsters?

The issue is punishing a critic of Mayor McDope.

Racist quote? Are u calling investigate West and NPR racist? That’s a novel way to deny facts.

God forbid that she tell the little snowflake the truth about being a whore.

That’s for the actual Liberals with unending bleeding heart, and neocons who secretly patronize the things they rail the most against.

Actual Progressives would be very wary of unintended consequences, and implementing laws that don’t actually address the issue, nor are proportionate to, or actually make any effort towards, addressing the actual problem.

It’s not a matter of not making it “easy” for this to occur. It will occur just as easily in other places. This kind of thing did not start happening, nor has it increased, due to Backpage.  Just because you think it won’t appear in a more “public” venue, does not mean it will not be able to be found in another one.

It only makes those that read the Weekly feel better that that they are doing something, anything, about it, no matter if it’s actually effective.

The ghost of Osama bin Laden whispered in a militant fundamentalist christian ear, “Two moving vans packed with explosives and detonated in the deep bore tunnel will topple a half dozen downtown skyscrapers with hellbound self-righteous ungodly liberals inside,” smiled, and licked his lips.

Backpage sucks anyway!  Soon as they close then others will profit because it’s not going to solve the problem.  The problem is with the parenting.  When does it get to a point for a person when they want to Become an Escort?
