Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Attack on Metro Driver Leads to Crash

Authorities say a Metro bus crash in the University District this morning was caused by a man who attacked a bus driver after refusing to pay his full fare.

According to Metro spokeswoman Linda Thielke, the incident started shortly after a man boarded the route 49 bus near NE 45th and 15th Ave NE around 6:oo am, and failed to pay his full fare. Peak Metro fare is $2.50, but the man paid only $1.50, a police source tells PubilCola.

When the driver told the man to pay up, the man began throwing punches at the driver, who drove off the road and crashed the bus.

A Seattle police officer was driving by the bus during the incident and was able to arrest the suspect. The driver was taken to the UW Medical Center.

There were several other passengers on the bus during the incident, Thielke says, but no one else was injured.

Thielke says Metro drivers are told not to argue with passengers over unpaid fares. “They’re not cops. They’re told to state it once, and not to prolong it,” she says.

Thielke didn’t have information on whether fare evasion had spiked in the last few days due to the weather.

    In an alternate universe, I’d love to see losers like this passenger held accountable for the public cost for his assault — all the police cars and the damage to the bus.

    Yeah, that didn’t turn out well (not that Metro drivers make change to begin with). Not the driver’s fault at all, but since the bus is stopped whenever people board or deboard (obviously), seems like they shouldn’t move again until fares are paid.

    Good point. I hadn’t thought of that. Since I don’t know whether or not it was a young urban professional, I guess you’ve proven that it was indeed the fault of the entitlement class. It simply follows naturally, right?

    You must have majored in logic before succumbing to mental illness. But it worries me that your caregivers don’t monitor your internet usage more.

    This is the problem with the “no argument” policy, it creates a situation where different drivers do different things including not even making an attempt to collect fare. Then when one driver does say, accurately, that the fare is $2.50 they get punched for their trouble.
    The standard, without exception, should be pay your fare or get off the bus before the cops get here. Every time. 
    Yeah, drivers aren’t cops, but neither are convince store clerks or the kids selling tickets at movie theaters. Yet somehow they are able to require everyone to pay for goods and services and not just have freeloaders walk out the store with a plasma tv.

    How often do you ride the bus?  If every bus driver waited at the stop for every passenger to fish out their pennies/ORCA card/transfer we’d never get anywhere.  Especially during Snowmageddon.

    When both my Bentleys were in the shop I once rode a bus with the unwashed masses.  I vaguely recall seeing a sign posted that said something to the effect of “Do not touch the driver, assaulting a bus driver is a felony.”

    How fortunate that a police officer was close enough to make the arrest.

    And hey, it could be worse.  Most of the riff raff jumping to uninformed conclusions in this comment thread are probably either too young to remember or had not yet moved to Seattle, but several years ago a bus driver was attacked by a passenger on 99 as it crossed the Aurora Bridge northbound.  The bus drove off the bridge and crashed into a house below.  There were multiple fatalities.

    Obviously you haven’t haven’t worked retail,ever.  Shoplifters walk out all the time with all sorts of things.  You don’t stop them.  You’re instructed to report it and call the cops, but not stop them.

    I remember that bus crash — it was positively surreal in that crazy crime like that was a very rare occurrence around here a long time ago.

    I’m a daily rider, if that’s helpful. Sounds like our experiences vary, especially during Snowmageddon—we all had even more time to have our fare ready due to the delays. But sounds like at least one person didn’t, and then punched a driver, which resulted in a bus hitting a tree. Not awesome.

    I drove for Metro for 20yrs.  The driver that was killed in 98 was Mark.  The crazy man that shot him and killed a few others was Silas Cool.  This was not this man’s first attack on drivers.  I swore I would never driver in Seattle again.  When are people going to take responsibility for their actions?  This man that assulted the driver now will have a felenoy assult on his record.  It limits where and with who you  can work.  I hope it was worth it.  Thank God most of the public is awesome.  My heart goes out to the drivers.  Some may say all the drivers do is drive but it is much more then that.  I for one want to thank all my ex co-workers for the excellent job they do.

    Because they’ve already caught him. They only give out a description when they’re looking for a suspect. Now that he has been arrested, they’ll probably wait until they have all of the charges worked out before they release his name.

    It’s possible that the bus was not in motion but that, while being assaulted by the passenger, the driver removed his foot from the brake pedal while trying to defend himself.

    Yes, the industry standard is to not argue.  We can only non-confrontationally imply that the cashier forgot to deactivate a security tag, ONCE.  Never accuse of theft or push the issue.  And when they skip the register entirely, just brazenly walking out with a product, we just log it in the security binder and call it in.

    It’s one part we’re not paid enough to be cops, two parts corporate doesn’t trust store-level management to handle the situation appropriately, (to say nothing of the part-time min-wage salesdrones), one part the retail markups have shoplifting margins already worked in, and 2 parts corporate doesn’t want to risk having a drone get in an unprovoked physical conflict with a crackhead shoplifter.

    Like that makes a difference when a bus full of passengers goes flying off the Aurora Bridge and lands on an apartment building.  FYI – the shooter died as well, so more than the bus driver died.  One passenger besides the shooter and bus driver died BTW, 32 were injured:
