Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Phoenix Jones Pepper Sprays Suspect In Party Bus-Jacking

A suspect in an attempted party bus-jacking over the weekend is on the loose, but may be identifiable by his orange skin, the result of an encounter with local masked man Phoenix Jones.

A Seattle Police Department report says early Saturday morning the driver of a party bus was parked in a lot at 1st and Blanchard, passing out fliers shortly before closing time.

As the driver stood outside the bus, another man hopped on, climbed into the driver’s seat and tried to put the bus into gear. The driver saw what was happening and tried to stop the man.

As the driver and suspect struggled, the bus rolled backwards onto 1st Ave. and was struck by another vehicle.

The report says Phoenix Jones—the most famous member of Seattle’s Rain City Superhero Movement—was on patrol in Belltown with a film crew when he saw the driver struggling with the suspect.

Jones intervened, dousing the suspect with a pepper spray which apparently dyes the target’s skin a shade of orange for several days.

The suspect took off running.

According to Jones, a fight broke out near the scene, and he wasn’t able to go after the man.

Jones now says he didn’t receive any help from Seattle police, who took hours to respond to the incident.

Jones says the incident happened around 1:45 am, but a police report says an officer was not dispatched to respond until a little after 3:30 am.

“The reason he got away is because police didn’t respond,” Jones says. “Civilians are going to get hurt when someone gets carjacked and the police don’t show up for two hours.”

Seattle police declined to respond to Jones’ statement.

    FUCK, I hate this guy.

And civillians aren’t going to get more hurt when someone who’s untrained intervenes in a situation where he doesn’t have all the information?

  • Bitten

If only he could clean up Steinbrueck Park.

  • Shaggy

Stay tuned.  I forecast that Phoenix Jones will tangle with Pumpkinhead again!

  • 82ndParatrooper

Why was this tagged ‘oompa loompas’?

  • 82ndParatrooper

nevermind, i get it. orange dye.

  • gohuskies

At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to dig the Seattle Crime stuff mixed in with the usual Publicola stuff. You have decidedly won me over.

  • belltown freak

If they want faster response by police, have the driver make the 911 call. The police know this guy is just a joke, they never come when a masked man calls.

  • Fan of Phoenix

you’re all gonna feel really shitty when Phoenix Jones loses his life at the hands of the mugger that was orignally trying to stab your significant  other.

  • Unappreciated

Phoenix Jones is a God Send!!! You are lucky to have him Seattle! Wish he was out by us.

  • The Joker

Those mob fools want you gone so they can go back to the way things were, but I know the truth. There’s no going back. You’ve changed things. Forever.

  • Jkallam

he has ZERO authority, and I suspect that he will get his a$$ sued off the first time he makes a mistake… no gun? no badge? GO HOME!

  • Bob Feemster

Hopefully he can do something about the epidemic of child prostitution out there. Also adult prostitution, as they are just as much the victims. Forget jobs and climate change, prostitution is the number one issue threatening our civilization right now.

I’ve read articles about him, he is trained.

  • Anonymous

Trained how?  I know police officers went through the academy and have to train with weapons, hand to hand combat, all sorts of things.  It’s not like there’s some sort of superheroes academy (god I hope there isn’t at least)

  • gohuskies

SPD might want to work on some of the curriculum - assault rifle storage, identifying a knife in a guy’s hand, etc.

  • gohuskies

I’d rather have this guy watching my back than SPD Officer Zsolt Dornay, who has driven drunk, shot a guy in the stomach while off-duty, and got road rage and forced another (innocent) driver out of his car, onto the ground, and held a gun to his head.

  • gohuskies

And beat up a woman as a part of the gut-shooting incident.

  • 82ndParatrooper

He is supposedly trained in martial arts… not threat detection, not conflict resolution, not common sense, not street smarts. We’d be lucky if he even has a CPR cert.

Definitely has no training in modesty.

  • 82ndParatrooper

No I won’t. Muggers almost never kill anyone. It would be just like this idiot to escalate it to that point though. My significant other is smart enough to handle his own situations.

If P.J. gets killed by a mugger, my point will have been proven.

YEAH, HOW DARE HE HELP PEOPLE!

I have no idea how your comment has four likes, but I’m going to attribute it to jealousy. We need more people like Phoenix Jones.

We need more superheros like the elusive Maria.
