Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Goldmark Opponents Holding McKenna Fundraiser

Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna’s adamant refusal to defend Democratic Lands Commissioner Peter Goldmark against an Okanogan County utility in a lands taking case is looking more and more political and partisan.

The law firm that is working on the case for the Okanogan utility, Foster Pepper, is holding a fundraiser for McKenna next Thursday.

Earlier today, McKenna appealed a 7-2 state supreme court ruling that he was required to defend Goldmark in the case.

We have a call in to McKenna’s campaign.

Well, that’s not tacky or questionable at all.

  • Barnes

Now THAT’S a scoop. More of this and less of the tenuous and silly attempts to paint him as a Tea Party Republican in disguise.

  • Barnes

Not to mention just dumb. Really, really dumb.

The verb “disbar” springs to mind

I wish. Unfortunately, I just reviewed the ethics rules (http://www.courts.wa.gov/court_rules/?fa=court_rules.list&group=ga&set=RPC ; see 1.7 et seq.) and none of them seem to apply. Nevertheless, it is a pretty ethically challenged move.

  • Not Ready for Prime Time

The scoop would be to note this was Chris Gregoire’s old firm, and Hugh Spitzer’s firm.  This is a heavily Democratic law firm.  Also, one of the first to hire Jews, way back in the mid 1980′s.  FAIL.

  • Cary N.

If they’re a heavily Democratic law firm, then why are they fundraising for McKenna at this early date?

    (Also, Jews? WTF???)

  • Anonymous

But also developer oriented: Tayloe Washburn and Judith Runstad come to mind. Interesting implications.

  • Curious

Much ado about nothing. Just more histrionics and biased reporting. Lawyers at all the large firms in town, not the firms themselves, will host these kinds of fundraisers, often for both/all candidates. Probably won’t be long before there’s a Jay Inslee fundraiser at the firm.

Has anyone questioned Goldmark’s connections to the property owners in the Methow Valley who lost all their environmental challenges to the underlying project and then donated tons to Goldmark’s campaign? What about the actual strength of Goldmark’s arguments?

  • Barnes

It’s also worth noting that the Republican primary challenger to McKenna a few years back came from this firm. It’s not a Democratic stronghold.

  • Barnes

Believe it or not Jews were discriminated against. It wasn’t long ago they couldn’t even get into country clubs.

  • Barnes

No, having the law firm which directly benefits from this continued litigation by McKenna hosting his fundraisers is notable. It’s not career ending or a legal violation but it is certainly worth noting.

  • Trevor

Nice evasion of a clear conflict of interest that provides further evidence that the AG’s office is being managed in an unprofessional way.

  • Curious

How exactly does the law firm benefit from the litigation continuing? At this point, it would have been much quicker for th firm and its client if McKenna had provided Goldmark with special counsel. Goldmark would likely already have gotten the judicial smackdown he’s going to get on appeal and the client would be building its project.

So here I was reading about another “story” about McKenna. I thought, “well what legal donations has Inslee had ? What did those firms represent?”The following are “backwards” from Inslee. For some real enterrtainment, click on some of the “Peter Goldman” donations. The guy has an amzing number of jobs and positions throughout the country. He has an unimaginable number of addresses. There are clicks within clicks of stunning information. Confirm his many identities and donations by going back to the original filings. After you have educated yourself, remember the funds Inslee brought to WA. from his D.C. campaign slush account. Oh yeah ….. its “legal” !!!!!!Now, if you are a “progressive” you should not bother looking at any of this. I’m sure you will come up with a rationale and then a defensive, “well so and so did such and such …” Spare us by not looking into the Inslee donations behind the curtains. The info is a little dated because I wanted the broadest sample and much of the funds from year to year are carried forward and redonated to other candidates. Inslee’s current Fed monies are substantial, but do not contain as much of the revelations of previous years probably due to his intention to run for Gov. He figured the “press” would be lazy and not follow the money.Nuff saidJamesaUBS Americas Inc.AddressC/O PER DYRVIK400 ATLANTIC STREETSTAMFORD, CT  06901

    P.S.
I only followed one person’s crap (Peter G.) because his name kept coming up and I thought I was getting mixed up with the name “Goldmark”. Needless to say, it is a convoluted mess of information. With some practice, I bet I could find the direct funding link between Inslee and Stalin  :-)

So, someone gets on line in Connecticut and reveals to us in Washington all the dirty secrets of Peter Goldmark’s campaign? No one around here who is still breathing isn’t aware of the connections between Peter Goldmark and Peter Goldman. And that proves what?

Sorry, you’re way off course here. Better check your GPS.
Best you spend an hour or two checking out the filings of Mr Goldman. It is not about any connection with Goldmark, it is about backdoor money shifting to Inslee, et al. It is about a subsidiary of a Swiss Banking / Investment firm (UBS) distributing the majority of their largess to, and through, the anti Wall Street crowd. It is about a “local” attorney who appears to run a fuzzy eco sounding organization in Seattle, who also purports to be located in many other States and be a boss, or executive, of a wide variety of companies in those other States. He documents his various identities in his Federal filings.
In case you forgot, Mr Shiney And Pure brought a good pile of these faux documented funds to the WA governors race. I think it is the most unethical and most tainted pile of funds brought to a State election, in the last 30 years. I think the WA rulers should just toss off the phoney PDC, etc., and just start bringing in the suitcases of cash. At least we could dispense with the illusions of legality and propriety.
    Later.

Because the grunt legal work for the case if farmed out this firm. The longer it’s alive the longer they get paid. No?

  • FPDem

    Folks -

Active Democrat and partner at Foster Pepper chiming in here.  “Curious”, above, has it right.  This event, like all of the political fundraisers held at FP, is hosted by an individual attorney, not the law firm.  The host has nothing to do with the PUD litigation.  No Foster Pepper funds are used for these events – the costs are born by the hosting attorney.  We don’t have a PAC and the firm does not donate to individual candidates.  This is why the invitation doesn’t specificy FP as the host or sponsor of the event, which is pursuant to long-standing, written firm policy.  Several of us hosted an event for Bob Ferguson, candidate for AG a couple of months ago, and I’m sure a group of us will have Congressman Inslee in in the future.  Love Publicola, but you guys missed the mark here and should correct your headline and story.

  • Curious

Getting paid to do what? Everything at the trial court and Court of Appeals is stayed pending the end of Goldmark and McKenna’s pissing match.  McKenna winning against Goldmark would mean LESS work for the firm because the underlying appeal of the decision won by the firm’s public utility client against Goldmark would be dropped.

Not sure what grunt legal work you think would be farmed out to that firm and by who.
