Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Kucinich Calls Pelz

I told you Politico could have gotten a meaner quote about Dennis Kucinich from Washington State Democratic Party Chair Dwight Pelz than the one they got from the Washington State Republican Party Chair Kirby Wilbur.

Here’s what Pelz just told us when we asked him about the possibility of U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) picking up and moving here to run for congress if he’s ultimately redistricted out of his seat in Ohio.

As Chair of the State Democratic Party, I am alarmed at the spoiler role Rep. Kucinich could play should he run for office in Washington, such as in the 1st or the new 10th CD.

Both of these Districts are likely to tilt towards our party, but a Kucinich candidacy could allow the Republicans to pick up a blue district in congress.

As Drew Carey would say, ‘Cleveland Rocks.’ Stay there, Dennis.

UPDATE:

However, Kucinich called Pelz later this afternoon and Pelz reports they had a “very respectful conversation.” Kucinich called, Pelz says, “to open lines of communication.” Kucinich said he understood that Pelz had concerns about holding the 1st and 10th swing districts and that he would definitely talk to Pelz before making any decision.

Pelz says he told Kucinich point blank that “it was problematic for a sitting Ohio congressman to come and run in Washington” and for that reason he had “concerns about his electibility.”

Kucinich is coming to Washington this weekend and asked Pelz if they could meet. Pelz, however, will be out of town.

Yeah, Drew Carey would say “Cleveland Rocks”.

But much more likely Ian Hunter – a Brit – would say “Don’t steal my bit Drew!” And then smack him in his fat puss.

On the other hand, I could imagine Ian’s probably enjoying rolling around in the dollar bills he earned in royalty money from Drew Carey.

  • Josh Feit

I must have missed something. Are you talking about Ian Hunter? The remote rock “star” from the early 70s?

Yeah, the dude who got rich from Drew Carey’s show, having written Cleveland Rocks and released it on his ‘You’re Never Alone With a Schizophrenic’ LP (yes, LP) from 79.

  • Big Jim Slade

Right, because all those royalties from Mott The Hoople’s version of ”All The Young Dudes” never made Hunter any cash? You guys are as terrible at rock history as you are at crediting photos.

Getting tired of Democrats and their entitlement issues when they get challenged from their left flank.

  • Josh Feit

Don’t want to drag this conversation off point, Big Jim Slade, but guarantee I would destroy you in the rock history category.

  • AlexS

Does anyone else think it’s as hilarious as I do that he cited Drew Carey for that- a man who was famous for a show from Cleveland but now is an integral part of Seattle (through ownership of the Sounders)?

  • Born in Cleveland

Josh – Did you ever listen to WMMS when you were at Oberlin?  ”Cleveland Rocks” is their theme song.  Anyone from that area associates the song with WMMS and not with Drew Carey.

Considering he isn’t from the state I think its ok.

A #37 charting song (on a #89-charting LP) – written by someone else – doesn’t really bring you very much money.

Having a song you wrote as the theme song for a 9-year running network show (even if covered by PUSA) earns you real cheddar.

Oh, BTW – Kucinich apparently gave Hunter the key to the city in 79, so apparently even crazy Dennis gets this one.

  • Godwin

Neither is anyone on this board. Your point?

  • My vote still only counts once

I’ve heard the phrase “Freattle” but always thought that applied to some down on their luck blue collar working stiff from the rust belt.  Seems now that applies politicians. These are interesting times we are living in.

hopfully it only gets more violent from here on out.

PS looking forward to tomorowos think tank.

Can you really say the 10th CD is a swing district, when it hasn’t even been drawn yet?

  • too hostile yuck.

how provincial.  Kucinich rocks, and he would draw an immense amount of national money, he’s been a leader at getting progressive views on TV.  If they screw him in Ohio, why not take the attitude of “gee how can we work with him to put him somewhere else to help the party win a seat?” instead of this nativist hostility.

Pelz is mean.  Of course Kucinich wouldn’t go where he’d be a spoiler, he wouldn’t go where the local party doesn’t welcome him and back him.  What’s the point of not even listening to him?  I’d prefer to see the various state party charis working as a team to find him a district than to be such jerks.

Win at any cost and lock out local citizens from running for congress, and people think the republicans are evil….
