Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Tacoma News Tribune: Analyst Looks at 2012 WA Governor’s Race and Cantwell Race

The Tacoma News Tribune got two fat posts out of bigwig east coast political consultant Larry Sabato, who looked at both U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell’s (D-WA) 2012 chances and called her the “automatic favorite.”

She doesn’t have a particularly high profile, nor does she have an intense popular following … But she’s a Democrat and an incumbent in a state that isn’t inclined to support Republicans … President Obama should win handily in Washington, as he did in 2008, and that ought to be enough for Cantwell.

Sabato also looked at what’s in store for the governor’s race:

This is likely to be one of the most competitive gubernatorial elections in the country in 2012. While she has made no formal announcement and has been careful not to disclose her intentions, Gov. Chris Gregoire is expected to retire after serving two terms. She has never achieved deep popularity—in part because she was unable to overcome the controversial way she became chief executive in the extremely close, disputed election of 2004.

Normally, one would think the Republican nominee, likely to be state Attorney General Rob McKenna, would have an edge. It may work out that way. But Congressman Jay Inslee, the probable Democratic candidate, will be a fierce competitor in a state that has become a Democratic stronghold. President Obama is the favorite to win Washington again in 2012, creating coattails for Inslee. The last Republican to serve as governor in this state was John Spellman, a one-termer elected in 1980. This is the longest gubernatorial dry spell for the GOP in the nation—but sooner or later, dry spells end. Will 2012 be the year

I expect Reichert to run against Cantwell and he will be crushed. Jay is a driven and passionate individual who will run a tireless campaign but he will have a tough road – McKenna will be backed by the Seattle Times and Rodney Tom-esque faux-Democrats, and I think McKenna will be able to pull off the two-face thing – act moderate for the moderates and extreme for the base. Jay can also be a little bit too Democratic at times – I personally love it but I can imagine McKenna acting all bipartisan high and mighty and dissing Inslee for standing for his principles. I am excited and looking forward to it!

“Gov. Chris Gregoire …never achieved deep popularity…” Also because she has been fair to middling to awful on a number of progressive Ds’ issues, like labor and environment. And a total non-leader on our state’s desperate need for tax reform.

Reichert? Really? Not questioning your assertion, but man, what a god send that would be for Maria. As for the governor’s race, Inslee is looking like the Dem frontrunner, but is there any possibility of Dow Constantine jumping in? I have no dog in that fight, just curious what you think.

Oh, yeah, right! Like Gregoire could do anything about dumb gomer voters approving Eyman’s anti-tax initiatives by whopping margins? She did the best she could with what was handed to her.

Did you expect her to go off on half-cocked crusades like McGinn? That’s not any kind of Governor *I* want.

King County Executives definitely do seem to follow that trajectory. I’d support Dow, but I would support Inslee too. They are both smart smart individuals with great popularity.

Well-placed quotations! We have an “I” Governor when in reality we needed a “D” governor for the past seven years.

I agree on Reichert being a terrible candidate. My theory is the 8th will have the Southern, more Republican parts of the district cut off in the redistricting, and that Reichert will figure better to lose going for the home run than lose on the home turf. And it isn’t like there are many other options – the R bench is pretty much Herrera, who needs a few more years before she is ready for state-wide, and whatever state legislator is sexiest, who will have big name recognition issues.

I am a Dow fan and wouldn’t mind him as Governor at all, but Jay has been campaigning for Governor since 2008 among the bigwigs and I have trouble seeing a Dem challenger disrupting his momentum at this point. Lisa Brown’s name was floated and that lasted about 2 seconds in the face of the Jay Train. I’m looking forward to an exciting campaign season!

Also I had to write this post three times, thanks disqus.

    “gomer”?

you are prejudiced against Southerners, sir.

Leadership means speaking out and advocating for what is right. On tax reform (and a number of other issues), Gregoire has been notable in her absence. If electeds would be more concerned for what should happen according to their own professed values, rather than scared of the shadow of the next election, we’d be far better off. Right wing reactionaries understand this; they dither a hell of a lot less than liberals.

What about Slade Gorton? He could be ready for a comeback run against Maria Cantwell to cement his legacy.

  • Stacy

Please, please, please, please let Dino Rossi run against Maria. It would be awesome to crush him, again.

  • Jakers

Funny, this is what has made me like her and probably why she is unpopular.

I’m hoping Clint Didier runs. Maria would kill him. But Rossi would be fun to crush again

Jay Inslee was a congressman in the 4th for four years. I think he would get a tiny boost in eastern Washington. I’m not saying hes going to win his old district but it will be at least a little closer than if it was Dow
