Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Another Jogger Attack: Fremont Edition

Seattle police are investigating yet another attack on a jogger, after a woman was attacked in Fremont early Saturday morning.

From SPD:

On January 29th, at approximately 1:50 AM, North Precinct officers responded to a 911 call from a woman at North 43rd Street and Linden Avenue North.  The victim stated that she was out for a run when she was approached by an unknown male walking toward her.  The victim stated that she changed direction to avoid the suspect, but that he grabbed her from behind and knocked her down.  He assaulted her while she was on the ground.  The victim was able to fight the man, and he ran off toward Aurora Avenue North.  The woman was able to call 911 and police arrived immediately.  An extensive area search was conducted, including K9, but officers were unable to locate the suspect.  Seattle Fire Department responded to the location and treated the victim for minor injuries.  The suspect is described as a male with olive complexion, approximately 5′-09″, with a muscular build and clean shaven.  He is believed to be around 30 years old. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt.  Detectives from the Sexual Assault Unit are conducting the follow up investigation.  Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact them at (206) 684-5575.

Just goes to show that ‘fleeing from danger’ isn’t foolproof. I wish I could jog outdoors but until I find an effective way to conceal carry while wearing sweatpants, I’ll stick with my treadmill.

  • Wondering

Seriously…who jogs at 2:00am?? Good that she was able to fight him off, but still… this isn’t Mayberry we’re livin in.

  • Lack Thereof

Maybe she works the night shift? I’m usually only out from 1am-6am, because of my work schedule.

  • LKR

Male or female, THIS is really STUPID! Don’t jog at 1:45am!!!! Yes it’s a free country but common sense should tell you that. Hum going for a Darwin award? Sorry, truly not wanting to blame the victim!

  • MG

Officer “living on the public dole” Stomper was one of the responding officers.

meant that for the starbucks brawl story…that’s what I get for commenting while eating dinner.

You think your chance of getting attacked is much greater at 2:00 AM than 9:00 PM or in the afternoon? If you posted a comment here you must read the actual articles on our current muggings and attacks. How many happened late at night? There is always a chance you will get attacked at any time of the day. Fearing going out at night and calling a light night jogger foolish makes me think you’re illogical. If you don’t feel comfortable then there is a close fitting shirt made by Undertech or similar named company that you can wear under another shirt that allows you to comfortably wear a compact Glock or J frame Smith and Wesson while you jog. And always remember the basic attack points – eyes, throat, groin.

Logic would keep most people from running in the city at 2:00am near aurora.
