Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Shooting at Rainier and Henderson

We’re getting word of a shooting at Rainer and Henderson. Again.

Sounds like the victim was shot in the leg.

This is the third shooting at the intersection in the last week or so.

More details when we get them.

Thanks to Silver for the tip.

S Henderson St was blocked off to vehicle traffic between Seward Park Ave S and Rainier Ave S. A detective / “unmarked” car pulled up as we were waiting at the light. The crime scene appeared to be on the south side of Henderson, near a bus stop and the driveway for Payless Shoes.

A couple of blocks away, we saw an occupied ambulance turning left onto Cloverdale St from Seward Park Ave S with its siren on, so assumed at least one victim / suspect (who can tell) was still alive.

Getting seriously sick of this crap going on in my neighborhood. Hello Mayor? Hello City Council?

  • CitySavers

Gang turf wars perhaps? Anyone know which gangs or what suddenly sparked it?

  • Mark B

Payless shoes on the North side of Henderson? Not that it makes a difference just say Henderson and you know it’s no good.

  • enough1

I sometimes get the feeling the cops want these gang members to kill each other off on Henderson.

  • Brad

D-DUB (DOWN WIT THE CREW) GANGSTER DISCIPLES run thick in that area. 53rd & Henderson is their block and they own it. Might also see some kids from CLOVERDALE aka DALE BLOCC out there. Look for kids wearing the colors Black or Green!

    Blue and orange

Surprised a multi-agency gang sweep hasn’t been targeted for south Seattle.

  • carol

cuz mayor mccheese is too busy building bike paths to target crime.

  • Snake Plisskin

Another alternative would be to wall that area off and transform it into a designated gang land. Reminds me of this trip I took to New York City in 1981…

This is RIDICULOUS. I live very close to this area, and I do have to say I can’t remember a time when I’ve driven 3 blocks and not seen a cop. They are everywhere down here. They even have one stationed in the Safeway during certain hours. It’s not like they aren’t paying special attention to this area. Where’s James Bible and the local branch of the NAACP? It really disturbs me that they are so quick to jump to the defense of anyone with a case that’s high profile, but they don’t seem to do anything to help with the violence that is occuring within their own race. Why are they showing up to bitch and complain to the new chief about what a terrible job they think he may do, but you don’t hear a peep out of them about all this black on black violence and what they plan to help do about it? Am I wrong here? I’m really frustrated that these kids are shooting each other and the people who they are supposed to be able to look to for guidance aren’t saying a word.

  • Ken

Why can’t they also blanket the area with video surveillance? Should provide deterrence and evidence at the same time.

  • Ugly Duck

Because ragging on your own community & leaders doesn’t get you rich or more popular Jules. James Bible & the NAACP are who they are because of the support they get from the local African-American & minority communities. Scolding or talking down to them will ruin them, even if the advice & condemnation is justified. But in reality, yes, they’re cowards, self-serving cowards.

In addition, you can’t ask much from some parents who are already working 40-80 hours a week to keep their homes, pay rent, buy groceries, pay car payments, basically just get by in life, but their kids are acting up in the streets. At some point the parents can’t really do anything when the kids are carrying guns 24/7, dealing drugs, & making more money than their parents or parent is. This is a greater problem of society that involves the whole inner-city & lower-income areas.

It didn’t surprise me when I drove up to the intersection & saw the yellow police tape there. Just more of the same mess. What’s confusing me though is why all these incidents are involving such “young” folks. There aren’t any 21+ gangsters around Seattle acting up? Or are they all in jail or the military?
