Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Didier Won’t Endorse Rossi Unless Rossi Meets Three Demands

At a press conference in downtown Seattle today, Clint Didier said he will not endorse Dino Rossi unless Rossi meets three demands which he said shouldn’t “be much of reach for Dino Rossi. In fact, they are really part of our party’s platform.” Calling all three “necessary” he laid out his demands:

1) Introduce the “Sanctity of Life” Act that U.S. Rep. Ron Paul introduced in the House. The bill would allow local jurisdictions to pass anti-abortion laws without interference from federal courts.

2) Sign a pledge that he won’t support any additional taxes or increases in new taxes.

3) Pledge to vote no on any bill that increases federal spending.

Didier said, “I want to endorse Dino Rossi, I really do. I want to beat Patty Murray in the worst way. I want to send her home with her pink slip in her hand.” But he says he’s gotten hundreds of emails from supporters who do not support Rossi. Noting that one-third of the GOP vote—”more than 150,000 people who gave me their vote and their trust”—was cast in his favor  he said, “I know my endorsement is very important to my supporters. I know that my supporters aren’t going to automatically vote for Rossi. And a lot them told me they won’t vote for him at all.”

In order to unite the party behind Rossi to beat Murray, and to get Didier to endorse and campaign for Rossi, he said he needs those three  assurances. He said he couldn’t make “a half-hearted endorsement because it wouldn’t really help Rossi win the race, unless my supporters know that I really mean it.”

Didier also said: “the people lost faith and trust in this Republican party. So at this moment I cannot endorse Dino Rossi, but that can change in a heartbeat. It could change by the end of the day,” adding that he “want[s] to unite the Christian Coalition behind this party.”

Asked if he had talked to Rossi, Didier said he spoke to Rossi on the phone last night and “He [Rossi] just said he wanted to think about it.”

He added that if Dino didn’t agree to his demands: “My people have said they will not vote for him, and they will not support him, so I’m only hoping and praying that Dino will give this serious consideration because I want to unite this party behind Dino Rossi.”

Asked how long Rossi had to commit to Didier’s demands, he said he wasn’t putting a deadline on it.

We have a call in to Rossi’s campaign.

Rossi’s spokeswoman, Jennifer Morris just gave me this statement:

“Dino will keep working to earn the support of anyone who will work to reduce spending, get the economy back on track, and put Washingtonians back to work.  He knows Washingtonians are principled and independent and expect their public servants to run on what they believe.  In that spirit, Dino will continue to campaign on the things he believes, and will not submit to a list of demands made by anyone even people with whom he agrees, in Washington State or Washington, DC.”

    What’s next?
Shall Didier, Akers, Latimer, and Chovil combine their endorsement criteria?

Hey Clint! Few people cared what you thought on Tuesday and even fewer people care what you think on Friday.

  • ivan

Typical ignorant Tea Party douchebag. This is so unconstitutional I want to scream. “The bill would allow local jurisdictions to pass anti-abortion laws without interference from federal courts.”

These dumbheads wouldn’t recognize the Constitution if it jumped up and bit them on their pasty white asses.

  • Doc Johnson

Well, Patty needs all the help she can get, so all I can say to Clint is “Thanks for stepping up.”

Rossi needs to “think about it”? So much for straight-talking, shoot-from-the-hip Republicans.

  • right wing spoiler

    @Doc: Exactly. Go Clint, go.

  • Nyconven

As a Murray supporter I really hope Didier stays on the scene through November which it appears that he will.

  • Anonymous

This is actually a rather interesting area of the law. The constitution gives congress the authority to set the appellate jurisdiction of federal courts. Its never really been tested much though, especially over something that would be considered a constitutional right.

Nothing like good old fashion infighting! Murray’s chances are looking better and better!

  • Tacticalis

    Write in Didier!

(It won’t be counted, but it’s not illegal to write it in!)

(spread the word to your relatives in wallakanagon…)

  • Jmnichols1

So, basically what Clint is saying is that if Dino doesn’t agree to these 3 demands that he’s backing Patty??? Well Clint I must say that you have lost my vote in the future if you decide to run!

  • SFKemerson

Didn’t Tuesday determine Didier to be a blank? Didier only knows how to communicate in football terms, maybe Rossi should let him know that the game was on Tuesday and Didier didn’t even show up to play. Didier just wants to be relevant and he just isn’t and that must be killing his ego
This guy has no right to make any demands.

  • Jakers

Dino, what about submitting to a list of demands from the voters?

  • Breeziepond

I had this guy pegged from the beginning just as I did Wilcox. Big egos, no substance. Face it Clint, you’re no Steve Largent.

  • dbix

    Message to Clint Didier:
Congratulate Dino Rossi for his victory. Tell him you will stand with him and unconditionally support him in the most important Senate race this State and the nation have seen. Then campaign for him. Be gracious in individual defeat and supportive of Rossi. There is no upside for anyone in you holding out your support. If you withhold it, the 12% who took a chance on you, a political novice, will forget you like we forget waived football player wannabees at try-out time.

  • Cat

    Message to Clint:
I voted for you, though realizing what you didn’t: that your lack of name
    i. d., your political inexperience, and your stridently anti-liberal views would prevent you from placing in the top two in this liberal-dominated state, even in this anti-liberal year. You waged a fine campaign until the last couple of weeks and have now, unwittingly I believe, put misplaced trust in your more politically unsavvy coaches.

Please get a good night’s sleep, go out on your farm in the morning, and rethink things then. Perhaps you will see in a different light what many of us see as a damaging press conference that you gave today and that some way to undue some of its damage will come to you then.

I’m still convinced that your actions arose from a place of principle and not from arrogance or self-absorption as some have asserted–but I do think what you’ve done has been counterproductive to what you seek. God grant you wisdom now and thanks for running.

  • Barleywine

    Or a drug test…

  • Jescando

actually ivan the constitution states that the congress can restrain the judiciary any time they feel like it. It is rarely used just because it is a strong use of the balance of checks and powers against the judiciary.

  • The Information

Logically, it is Rossi who should concede and let Didier run in his place.

    Analysis

Rossi brought in pretty much all the votes who actually want to support him. For 60 percent of the population, Washington is a Federalist state — it is dependent on the largess of Washington DC for military, industrial and contract support along with special interest funding. Its leaders are elected for their ability to mau-mau the powers that be, and bring home the bacon.

So these people naturally vote for Patti Murray in the traditional “WA Gravy Train” that includes everyone from Boeing, to Tri-Cities scientist to a Belltown homeless person. So, that leaves Rossi with some of those people who may think they can leave some of the others behind plus groups that want a bigger slice of the pie like the builders.

Didier is brings in the dissatisfied Independents, people who aren’t — or don’t perceive themselves as — part of some large group that is mostly getting free ride from Uncle Sam. The effect of a Rossi or Murray would be about the same for them…essentially nothing. They would have zero voice, as now. And they are not necessary true red Republicans so they might not even show for the GOP.

That means Rossi ends up with 42 percent of the vote.

Now, suppose the GOP sanctified Didier. He automatically gets that 12 percent Independents from the East and probably doubles it by eating up the Akers voters. Second he is seen as serious from other Republicans who may even be willing to vote against their immediate self-interest in order to get a toehold in Olympia for later gains. So of Rossi’s 33 percent, he could take away another 25 percent giving him near to half the vote and a possible win.

  • Barleywine

Or maybe Clint was a wakeup to the right. There are really only two parties, you know. And the wakeup was to the Republican Party, who realized this tea-thing was just something interesting to watch for, and it sputtered.
Hats off to Rossi for reading the tea-leaves.

  • flounder

Or maybe it will lead to the complete unraveling of the Republican party as the liberal Republicans desperately try to hold onto power in the party.

  • flounder

It was 25% of the Republican party that caste their vote for Didier…

  • flounder

And you aren’t the genius that claim to be either.

  • flounder

Yes … what the heck. What bothers me is the arrogance to not “try” to work with those requests. What the heck does this mean? Does Dino really stand for anything?

  • flounder

yeah…. only 25% (really more) or the Republicans. But since when do the Liberal Republicans need conservatives to help them win an election. This all falls on Dino.

  • flounder

Hmmm. Look at how the Dino spokeswoman responds (took a paragraph to just a say the Dino doesn’t like to be told what he needs to believe in) and compare it to the spokeswoman of Didier (in two sentences she sums up the who deal and gets to use some street talk). This is the problem with Dino. We really don’t know who this guy is, because he doesn’t seem to have any passion.

  • Ryan

That’s right, Clint. Swallow your principles. Go with the guy who refuses to stand for anything. Then you can become part of the big GOP machine, too, and be a Good Party Guy!

  • Barleywine

I’ve made that same mistake (two words, not two sentences) after two many.

It gets my feelings on the table, and then ignored by normal folks.
Clint has his day. Time for bed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Erin-Smith-Aboudara/100000196726781 Erin Smith Aboudara

    12% for Didier. Not 25%.

  • Barleywine

    Ah, no.
What you call the liberal Republicans, the Republicans call the base.

What you call the base, are flounders. Ratfish. Bottom fish.
    Sole, not Soul.

  • http://www.cna-trainingclass.com/ cna training

    nice post. thanks.

  • Tommy22

    Dino,

You ignore Clint and these other Didiots. Stay stealthy. Keep your powder dry and your views secret.

  • Donolectic

So what you’re saying is that if Didier doesn’t accept Rossi, then you’re backing whoever the democrat is if Didier runs next time?

  • Donolectic

He said “Republican party” – not the entire electorate. Taking Murray out of the mix, 25% seems about right.

  • Donolectic

It’s important to sell out all your principles to win elections and even better if you don’t have any in the first place, that’s why we should all support Rossi. Go GOP!

  • GreyGhost

    Clint who?

  • Emanuel4859

people need to wake up there’s no way dino wins over patty murray reality will look you in te face come Nov. thats a promise

  • Emanuel4859

count the votes murray will mop him up in king and pierce county not enough voters in small town washington this is a Democractic state i gurantee dino will not win murray is and will continue to be our person in washington

  • Craftymiser

What happened Clint? I thought you were a man of your word? In May 2010 you said you’d get behind anyone who was voted in in the Primaries, and you said you’d back them 100%. I voted for you, but you lost. Now be a man of your word and a TEAM PLAYER and support like you said you would.

  • Debbiepeachtree

    I have 2 questions -

1 — what is the unemployment rate in Washington these days?

2 — What have the democrats done for you recently?
