Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Didier Responds to Dino’s “Fuck You.”

After Dino Rossi refused to “submit to a list of demands” from Tea Party candidate Clint Didier today to win Didier’s endorsement in the general election race against U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, Didier told PubliCola:

“It’s not a list of demands. It’s what the people want to hear from Dino. They want to hear some specifics instead of generalities.”

Didier’s spokeswoman, Kathryn Serkes was more candid with us:

“So is Dino saying, ‘Fuck you’ to those people [who supported Didier]? ‘Fuck you, I don’t need your votes? I can win with 33 percent.’”

  • Mary

I can’t bring a child in to this world to hear that kind of candid language from good Christian Republican politicians! i wonder if Didier is even really Christian.

  • Vox Popolii

    Didier write in!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

I heard he was a Muslim. Also Didier is just another d and some dot connecting from diddler. How do we know he’s not a child molester? Dudes got a mustache.

  • Swatter

Sorry boys, but no write-in. Two two means top two and not top two and a write-in.

  • Swatter

that’s top two is top two

    What a Teabagger World

I see bags of Tetley, Red Rose too
Dangling from pissed folks, shouting at you
And I think to myself, what a teabagger world.

Tri-corner hats of blue, and faces white
Glocks strapped to ankles, folks wound up tight
And I think to myself, what a teabagger world.

The spelling of the signs, they hoist up in the sky
Say “Get A Brain MORANS!” to people passing by
I see folks shaking fists, saying “Government we hate!”
They’re really saying, “We lost in ’08.”

“Terror babies” scheme! Brown people plot!
Obama’s a Muslim! And that’s all they got.
And I think to myself, what a teabagger world
Yes I think to myself, what a teabagger world.

Stay classy, Clint. Or maybe I mean Kathryn Serkes.

  • SFKemerson

Kathryn Serkes needs to be told that a classy lady shouldn’t talk so repulsively that is very unprofessional of her! Shame on her, that just puts a poor representation of her office and candidate out there!

  • Bill

Man, you guys keep making me think about voting for Rossi. And I thought Sam Reed was the only Repub I could stomach

  • squiggles

Yet another ‘family values’ Republican showing the public their true colors. But hey, if Dick Cheney can say it, why not Ms. Serkes?

Didier, good job at ending your career in politics. If Rossi loses, people will list this moment as one of the reasons. And you will be done in Republican politics.

  • morning

Has he produced his birth certificate? Has Rossi?

  • Anonymous

    Ha!

  • Kaserkes

Hey guys, I was just translating Dino Rossi’s comment from the political spin of polit-speak. I stand by it — Dino just basically told 150k voters that he doesn’t care what they think — it was Dino telling them to F%#& themselves.

  • Kaserkes

oh, and what makes you think I’m a good Republican Christian?

  • cactusbob

Regardless of all the unfortunate language and emotion, we come back to the basic fact that the choice for Senator for the next 6 years is Patty Murray or Dino Rossi. We know that Patty Murray is a rubber stamp for Obama and socialism/Marxism. Dino Rossi may not be as conservative as many would prefer, but he will be a vast improvement over Murray. Just put on your “lesser of the two evils” hat and vote for Rossi, unless you favor continuing to destroy freedoms and opportunity.

  • SFKemerson

    Class… What a real class act…

Here’s the deal, I’m sure in high school & college, Didier was the big football hero and everyone fawned over him. Then he goes to the NFL, comes home with 2 Super Bowl rings and everyone worships him when he returns to coach his old school. Then he spends 8 months going around regurgitating Glenn Beck’s talking points to conservative friendly crowds and everyone loves him.

Tuesday, after a lifetime of everyone telling him he’s relevent, he finds out he isn’t. Now he’s doing everything he can to make himself relevent again.

Didier has ZERO desire to help Dino. He thinks if he can sabotage Dino’s election, in 2 years he can run around and say “I told you so” and he’ll be the nominee.

What a pathetic joke…. BTW, since the knock Didier supporters had on Dino was that he’d lost pervious elections, will they now call Didier a ‘loser’ also?

  • No Thank You, Clint!

I voted for Didier. Now I am very sorry I did. His political career is OVER, and he has probably relegated many other potentially good grass-roots campaigners to an early defeat. No Democrat could have wished for more.

Nice job, Didier campaign. Now go away.

  • Rick

Is anyone else getting tired of the Tea Party habit of referring to themselves as “the people?” Didier did it here: “It’s what the people want…” If “the people” had wanted what Didier stands for, he’d have placed in the top two.

  • Warren Peterson

Clint Didier, A Classless Act http://clearfogblog.wordpress.com

  • Mark

Katherine has it exactly backwards. The “F-U” is from Didier to the Conservatives of WA who preferred Rossi. You don’t have to be a loser when you lose!

  • Mr. RcGuy

    Or Joe Biden.

  • Anonymous

Hey “BigBob”, can you do us all a favor and Google “Teabagger” so you understand exactly what it means?

  • Curtisp

Real people understand embryos have civil rights. Those of us who think civil rights start and don’t end after gestation are not real Americans. We are imposters or perhaps Canadians. Does that help.

  • BigBob

You mean like the videoProud to be a TEA Bagger?

  • Sarah

    Clint Didier: don’t retreat…reload! (criticized bc his 1st Amend.rights ceased 2exist thx 2activists trying 2silence”isn’t American,not fair”)

  • http://manywordsforrain.blogspot.com/ Mr. Baker

Is this what McGinn keeps referring to?

  • Elvis

To quote ex-governor Gary Locke (D), ” Dino plays both sides of the aisle equally well”… Dino will be no more responsive to the people than Queen Patty

  • Elvis

According to Dino the Rino’s stats I think you get three losses before you’re a bona fide loser

  • Elvis

Dino’s campaign consisted of riding past name recognition with the average uninformed voter who simply goes with a name that sounds familiar… It doesn’t mean that the average voter knows any of the acyual events taking place in our country. By the way if you haven’t seen the GOP’s “platform” it too is extremely uninformed and does not even attempt to use any strength in defining the true issues facing the country like DEFICIT spending or entitlements.

  • Batt man

If you think that the Washington State GOP is C-O-N-S-E-R-V-A-T-I-V-E
you are rally misinformed. In any other state than California, they’d be considered progressive liberals…

  • 3rd Watch

No, you are saying you want Patty Murray to win. What big lib special interest group are you a member of?

  • 3rd watch

We already know you are a Democrat from your idiotic comments. Go away already. You are killing Clint’s future election chances if he chooses to run for county commissioner.

  • Christian9999

The guy is supposed to be a christian candidate? Why does he have a person with a sailors mouth for a communications person…this is really wrong…

Talk about loosing the christian vote!

He needs to disavow this woman immediately and put her to the curb.

  • flounder

Didier didn’t say it … his spokeswoman did. She probably said it without clearing it with him, and she probably should be demoted.

  • flounder

    Curtisp … you are twit.

  • flounder

If Didier was looking for a political career … he would have bowed down to the liberals in the Republican party. He isn’t. He is trying to be honest to himself and to those who voted for him. As he said many times, he eagerly wants to endorse Dino … but does Dino even want the vote from social conservatives. It doesn’t seem like he does.

  • flounder

At least we know that Didier has a back bone … not like Dino.

  • flounder

That is what Dino and liberal Republicans are saying. “We don’t really care about the conservatives in the party” What they care about is gaining power for the sake of power. As Didier said, it is what the people are begging for Dino to actually say…

  • flounder

Maybe Didier cares more about his principles than … being elected. Sadly, this is exactly what we need in politics.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Erin-Smith-Aboudara/100000196726781 Erin Smith Aboudara

They aren’t conservatives nor are they really Republicans. They are Libertarians. They do not get to tell Rossi or those of us who have been Republicans for a few decades “what we need to agree to” to win their 12% for Rossi.

But, many of their supporters suddenly saw the light today and quickly began abandoning Didier with this stunt. They are the actual Republicans from that group who were caught up in the Tea Party movement or simply liked something they heard from Didier earlier and supported him through the Primary. They woke up today from the spell they were under and realized that Patty Murray is not a very intelligent woman who spends a lot of their tax money and appoints judges and they want her out. So they will vote for Rossi even though he was not their first choice candidate.

The people who remain with him are now known as Didiots (The David Boze Show). So glad I was with Rossi, a real Washington state Republican, from the beginning that I do not have to suffer with these folks.

  • Sdg

    http://www.takebackwashington.org/About_Us.html

I heard Didier speak on this during the press. It appears that this communications person Ms. Serkes is running this? The same one that did the inappropriate comments.

Has anyone checked this person out? What is all this back story on this woman and the FEC i found on here:

    http://www.publicola.net/2010/06/22/62916/

  • Paige

Clint Didier, I thought about voting for him, I’m proud I didn’t. What a classless arrogant jerk he turned out to be

  • Michelle

sdg: She was on the FEC report under in-kind donations for the q2 FEC report. So there isn’t any violation. What she said was incorrect because she doesn’t know the FEC regulations.

Just proving she doesn’t think before she speaks. What a GREAT quality in a media director

  • Tommy22

    Demoted?
What is lower than being a media director for a failed political campaign that ended with humiliating defeat days ago?

  • JJustice

All he cares about is his ego and pride, not principles.

  • JJustice

It anyone is a liberal trying to masquerade as a republican it’s diddler. He’s against free trade, he’s anti-military, and he’s taken bailouts and handouts his entire life. If didiot was a real conservative he’d attack patty murray, not dino.

  • Johnny

Everything goes through a candidate. But if it’s true that he’s lost control of his own staff, then good riddance. It just proves he’d be over-matched in DC.

  • David F

Lincoln’s caveat: “A house divided cannot stand” restates a vital principle from the Founders’ – which is adhered to by all successful organizations and effective leaders.
Coach John Wooden remarked: “Amazing things are possible when no one is worried about who gets the credit.” Both people and cultures are lost without sound governing principles to keep them on course. And once-great organizations are doomed to certain fail by relegating them to ‘the past.’

  • JJustice

Didier… That’s French, right? Explains everything.

  • Fedup with the old guard GOP

So you’re a REPUBLICAN? WooHoo… I am SOooo impressed. So is Lindsay Graham and John McCain, not to mention Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. The GOP is a major PART of the problem that is America today. You put a labels on people that will decide this election and then you expect us to give our vote to a candidate because the state GOP bleeses him? I may or may not vote for Dino, but I won’t contribute a dime to his campaign… I WILL send my campaign contributions to a conserative candidate (yet to be decided) in some other state that has values, a backbone, and respect for all voters, not just the party hacks that fawn all over him/her. Get a clue WE are in TROUBLE… We need to take a firm stand on our budgetary problems and stop the continual erosion of our freedoms… I am NOT Liertarian and I find Dino unpalatable as a conservative choice.

  • minorityreport

The definition of teabagger is defined by the mass media far more effectively than a youtube video. Chris Mathews is most likely your reference if you use the term derisively.
Otherwise the description is tea party (taxed enough already)

Tea party is a consortium of people who want the government smaller,
and blame BOTH parties for it getting out of hand. That is why they ran someone against the establishment Republicans. The national media and Chris Mathews are run by the corporations who control the federal government.
    Who’s side are you on?

That said, I do regret Kathryns “candid” statement. Is that the same staffer who was swearing in the background on radio? Or is it just that the media has open mics all over, and a bully pulpit to decide what your message is, whether that was your “statement” or NOT?

  • minorityreport

    Who are you, his mother?

Maybe you were too busy to notice, but Dino skipped the debates.

This is his chance to weigh in. You see, Didiers supporters are much less likely to vote for a politicians choice, or even HIS choice. He is giving Dino the chance to win those votes for himself.

  • Re-elect Patty!!!

Go Patty! Go Patty! Go Patty!

  • Yaya

Libertarians? I didn’t know they were against criminalization of drugs?

  • Fred Gruben

At least she puts her name on her comments, unlike you.

  • Beauregard

You can call it “Tea Party”, but I know the Klan when I see it.

  • Guest

Please drop the faux bipartisanship. There’s a reason Tea Party candidates only run in Republican primaries, and why haven’t we heard about Didier’s folks approaching Murray with a plan to earn his endorsement.

  • Guest

If life begins at conception, why did Republicans write the 14th amendment to trigger citizenship when you’re born?

  • Mr. X

Or to use the phrase my brother coined, the “New Klux Klan.”

  • Mr. X

Not to make a personal attack that may violate the terms of use here, but if you really believe that Murray is a rubber stamp Obama’s so-called socialism/Marxism, you’re a fucking idiot who clearly never made it past your junior high civics class, let alone poli sci 101.

  • BERT CHADICK

Oh Noes! Clint cusses when he doesn’t get his way. Losing to the most notorious loser in the State has gotta hurt.

Of course the TEA party is bipartisan, they accept support from racists from both the Republican Party and the American Nazi party, as well as a few old Democrats who miss the good old days when the party supported Jim Crow.
