Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Afternoon Sugar High / Sugar Crash

A new daily feature from the Cola—a political winner and a political loser of the day.

Today’s Cola Sugar High goes to U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA).

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray scored $26 billion in Medicaid dollars and teachers salaries today (over $500 million for Washington state). Murray’s amendment includes a long list of tax cuts and killing corporate tax loopholes to pay for it.

Earmarks shmearmarks.

Today’s Cola Sugar Crash goes to U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA, 2).

Larsen released a YouTube video this week trashing his Republican opponent John Koster for his allegiance to the Tea Party, which the video portrays as a crowd of crazies.

The Seattle Times responded by trashing Larsen. At their ed board meeting with Larsen this week, Larsen  praised the Tea Party as “well-meaning,” according to an angry Times editorial busting on Larsen for being hypocritical.

  • Fanta

    Larsen comes off pretty amateurish…again.

  • Jogilvie

Like Publicola is the authority on who does what in politics. You guys need to get a grip.

  • Michele

Larsen is doing what the head honchos at the DNC told their candidates to do: throw mud. It is the only thing they feel they have left, since their polling numbers are in the dirt.

  • BigBob

Why did Larsen use footage of Koster's supporters parading around Snohomish county with the symbol of racism, slavery and secession?

    That doesn't seem fair.

If Koster and the Snohomish Republican party march in our streets with the stars & bars, that does not mean they are anything like the tea party which marches around with racist placards. It is just a coincidence that tea party protests often include symbols and signs of racism and the Koster's most enthusiastic Snohomish county Republicans march with the confederate battle flag.

In any event Democrats are always recording Republicans doing stuff or acquiring the recordings Republicans made and using it against the interests of Republicans. This is just wrong. Former Vice President Cheney had it correct. Republicans should be allowed to pursue their interests in secret.

Shame on Larsen for showing us what Republicans do in broad daylight! Shame!

  • Bill

The real news here is Patty Murray scoring $500M for the state to be paid for by “tax cuts”. Give me a break, she is going to pay for it with tax increases. Closing “loopholes”, (not that there is any such thing as a loohole since a tax loophole is simply something that hasn't been taxed yet) is a tax increase.

BigBob: “Why did Larsen use footage of Koster's supporters parading around Snohomish county with the symbol of racism, slavery and secession?”

Because Larsen is dishonest, that's why. It was part of a larger presentation of U.S. historical flags. A presentation Larsen knows about, because he attended it and sat next to the presenter.

Every adult knows that there's no racist meaning attributed to the use of the flag in that context, if they know the context. It is dishonest to attack it, and childish to remove it from a historical presentation just because dishonest people might attack it.

“It is just a coincidence that tea party protests often include symbols and signs of racism”

No, they don't. They are, in fact, very rare (unless they are coming from Democrats … every single racist sign and symbol I have seen at a Tea Party event I've attended is from the LaRouchies, who are Dems).

Shameless Attack Ad a Sign of Larsen's Desperation

Arlington, WA – August 3, 2010 – In a year when entrenched incumbents are doing everything possible to divert attention from their dismal voting records, Rick Larsen's shameless attack video posted today sets a new low. Utilizing video footage and still photos gathered from various locations (some in Washington, some from out of state), Larsen attempts to link Koster and Tea Party patriots to everything from the Confederate Army to the BP oil spill.

Conveniently forgetting that he is the only candidate in the race to receive money from BP, and never mind that he himself attended a recent Bellingham Tea Party forum, Larsen appears to be digging deep for ways to implement the old “Big Lie” propaganda technique, where one impudently lies in contradiction to the plain facts.

Utilizing one distortion after another, the photos of confederate flags sprinkled throughout the 2 minute farce are particularly deceitful. One photo shows Koster supporters at a 4th of July parade in Arlington standing next to a civil war reenactment troop carrying battle flags that was positioned next in line to the Koster Team. Another photo was taken at the Everett 4th of July parade where the Confederate flag appeared as part of a historical American flag display by one of the state legislative candidates. While Koster signs may have appeared in the Everett Parade, the Koster Campaign did not even have an entry in that parade.

The most offensive segment of the Larsen video shows a political cartoon with a derogatory depiction of a Tea Party person as a “Tea Bagger” and a Klu Klux Klansman dangling a helpless President Obama in a noose.

“For this kind of trash to surface this early in the campaign, one has to wonder just how deep Rick Larsen will sink to retain power,” said John Koster. “Rick has not only insulted me, but an important constituency of solid citizens in the 2nd Congressional District. We would demand an apology from Larsen if we didn't believe it would fall on deaf ears. Larsen lost his common sense several years ago when he became a rubber stamp for Nancy Pelosi. Now it appears he has lost his civility as well.”

There's medication available for people with your condition.

“Every adult knows that there's no racist meaning attributed to the use of the flag “

I see. No way any 'adult' could possibly view the flag of secessionist rebellion in the pursuit of enslaving Africans in the 1860s as a symbol or racism when it is paraded down the street in Snohomish in 2010.

As I said, Shame on Larsen for showing us what Republicans do in broad daylight! Shame!

But as a tea party activist with an ax to grind, I appreciate your reply. You stay strong and keep waving the stars & bars at your tea party history presentation parades. And be sure to continue to write your little stories about it so we remain aware of your saintly intentions.

  • BigBob

said John Koster. “Rick has not only insulted me, but an important constituency of solid citizens in the 2nd Congressional District….”

Shame on Larsen for insulting the “solid citizens” parading with the flag of African enslavement and treasonous secession! What next?

  • BombasticMo

Good call. By all means, I want my income and property and purchases to be taxed, but I'd hate to see a corporation raking in billions to be taxed at even close to an equal rate. That'd be stupid. Loophole-schmoophole, I think the poor should finance our country!!!!!!

  • BigBob

    Let them eat cake!

  • BigBob

    Hey Smart Guy!
Look at the picture, and tell me what “U.S. historical flag” the green, white and red one is next to the flag of treasonous rebellion in the pursuit of racist enslavement being carried by Koster supporters?

“presentation of U.S. historical flags” my a55!

Birds of a feather flock together.

This “new feature” is not a welcome addition to our political landscape. I remember when a newspaper, I think it was Politico, did something like this during the 2008 election. We found out in breathless language that John McCain or Barack Obama has “won” a particular day and it was exceptionally meaningless. We live in 200 year old democracy with elections at intervals of 2, 4 and 6 years for our various political offices. The internet and the rapid dissemination of news doesn't change this, nor does it change the fact that the worthwhile things take a long time to come about. Instead of telling us which of the usual characters “won” a day, what about a new feature that focuses on lesser known issues or candidates? What about “historical fact of the day?” or “science discovery of the day?”

  • ivan

I'll save you some work, Josh. You want a “loser of the day?” Look in your mirror. Oops, typo. I meant “hoser of the day.”

  • Billzimmer

Rick Larsen has a solid record of Ideological “rubber Stamp” for collectivism not individual responsibility. The constitution says our rights from GOD not the Government.

This lemming has lost his sole and is a liar of the TRUTH. I was thinking facts but as most of you have seen they make them up and then post them on a blog to prove their point. Communist!!

  • Bill

Unfortunately all taxes are paid by the individual. Businesses work for a certain rate of return on their money and they factor taxes into their price structure. The taxes are then passed on to the consumer, in essence making the business the tax collecting arm of the government. It is a simple concept that seems to be difficult for some people to grasp.

  • BigBob

Corporations are entitled to all the rights and responsibilities of people.
    See Citizens United v. FEC.

Your insightful well thought out comment leaves readers wondering why 'GOD' has not selected you as our leader.

    Burn The Confederate Flag Day
Burn the Confederate Flag Day is a protest against the right's exploitation of racial prejudice for political gain. We urge you to burn the Confederate flag, a long-time symbol of racial hatred, on Sept 12, the date when the racially-divisive Tea Party holds its annual hate fest.

  • kurisu

OMG, the wingnuts have escaped from their Sound Politics cage.

  • ivan

Oh, no! He's lost his sole! How's he going to get around? Quick, Bill, lend him your flip-flops!

  • Barleywine

For a guy who's very life depends on PubliCola, you sure talk funny.

  • Barleywine

When is “Don't Burn Anything Day”?

I'll be there, and we'll cook up some serious stuff.
And we'll all eat together; and have tea.

    Otherwise, please stuff your Day.
I've seen your name before, and you don't know nuffin'.
