Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

PubliCola Picks Jay Inslee for US Rep., District 1

PubliCola enthusiastically endorses U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee. His office is a hive of action on historically significant issues such as climate change (he was a lead sponsor of the 2009 cap and trade proposal), financial reform (he was a defiant “no” vote on the Wall Street bailouts), and health care reform (he was a key author on the House Commerce Committee, where he pushed a series of cost-containment amendments to encourage the use of preventative health care and equalize Medicare reimbursements regionally.)

Inslee also burns the midnight oil on his own pet agenda items, including net neutrality (fighting for regulations that would prohibit ISPs from controlling content) and renewable energy (pushing for investments in smart cars and alternative energy). Inslee means it on this renewable energy stuff. Venturing out of D.C. in 2007, he worked his ass off on the grassroots statewide campaign to pass I-937, the initiative that raised the standards on Washington State utilities, mandating the use of renewable resources.

An anti-war liberal, Inslee has followed-up his Bush-era vote against the Iraq war vote with recent votes to bring the troops home from Afghanistan, defying Obama’s war budget requests.

Given how heated political discourse is these days, it’s not surprising that six-term incumbent Inslee, who usually faces little competition, has drawn three challengers. However, only two of those have raised any money—Redmond business consultant and former Microsoft manager James Watkins and Woodinville financial planner Matthew Burke. Neither is catching fire. Despite some prominent ink in the Seattle Times this weekend, Watkins and Burke have 40 and 11 individual contributors, respectively, according to the latest federal campaign-finance reports.

Everyone knows Inslee is lining up to run for governor in 2012. And that’s cool. But we want to keep this progressive mover and shaker in Congress as long as we can.

PubliCola picks Jay Inslee.

I work for a manufacturing business that is completely dependent on shipping our products across the US and Canada. We have been producing a renewable resource for over 85 year & we use practices that restore & regenerate areas we use. So, I am dismayed at your enthusiastic support for Jay Inslee. Inslee's pet project–charging a tax on all use of carbon energy will cripple my business. When gas prices got up to $5.00, we closed several plants (laying off hundreds of good people), took pay freezes and held our breath. Inslee hopes to pass legislation that will make all energy costs sky-rocket. My job along with hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs in the US are very much at stake if he succeeds in this massive increase in manufacturing costs. I understand his desire for forcing this disaster on the American public; but Publicola's support for it seems uninformed or indefensible. Have you guys talked to manufacturers? Do you understand that when manufacturers shut down commerce everywhere will fall; your jobs could be in jeapardy as well–who will buy advertisements when we are in a depression?

More like another rude little Democrat/Liberal engaging in name calling against anyone who makes a point using facts…

So here are some more facts about Inslee that proves he is anti-small-business, anti-individual rights, and in general a giant pandering spend-a-holic. A question for the author; Does progressive = spend?

    Individual items:

Voted NO on small business associations for buying health insurance.
Voted NO on establishing tax-exempt Medical Savings Accounts.

He did initially vote no on invading Iraq, but after the house became majority democrat in 2006, he voted in lock step on all the military issues.

And… he also voted yes on the TARP program, which included the infamous bailouts (blames it on Bush though), and the $1 Trillion Obama Stimulus that has done nothing. And in 2009 he voted to raise the national debt limit so that US Gov't could spend our country even deeper into debt – debt is no joke now. The CBO has predicted the crash of the $USD by no later than 2018 unless the debt is paid off – but Inslee voted to expand it.

Bottom line – good candidate if you are a leech on society. Very bad candidate if you want America to exist in 2020.
