Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Council Aide Involved in Soccer Sex Scandal Resigns

Ann Corbitt, a legislative aide to City Council member Tom Rasmussen who was involved in a sex scandal with British soccer player Ashley Cole earlier this year, has resigned, Rasmussen confirmed. Rasmussen would not say whether he had asked Corbitt to leave, citing his policy of not “discussing personnel matters,” but he did say Corbitt submitted her resignation two days ago, and that it took effect immediately.

Corbitt gave a salacious account of her affair with the married soccer star to the British tabloid News of the World, including video and copies of text messages she exchanged with Cole. PubliCola was the first publication in the US to cover the story.

After news of the affair broke, Cole’s wife filed for divorce. It’s unclear how much, if anything, Corbitt was paid for her story (a common practice in the British press); Corbitt herself has not returned an email for comment.

A loss for Tom and Seattle.

  • Fair, balanced & hip

It’s unclear how much, if anything, Publicola benefitted in clicks from hawking the Corbitt non-story and repeating the words “sex scandal” while posting a photo of a hot looking babe where the “scandal” was marital infedility, an experience that most marriages undergo, if polls are to be believed. But this kind of tawdry sensationalist is a common practice in the seattle alt hip press; Publicola itself has not returned an email for comment.
