Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Last Night

After yesterday’s Sound Transit public hearing, I asked Bellevue City Council member Claudia Balducci how to get back to Seattle via the proposed light-rail alignment. (It’s pretty simple until you get to the bridge to Mercer Island: Straight down 112th Ave. SE, take a left on Bellevue Way SE, then, if you’re me, get lost). My route took me past tiny Surrey Downs Park, past the entrance to Surrey Downs, along the edge of the Mercer Slough, past Bellevue High School, and near the Bellevue Club and its expansive, rolling golf course.

Lessons learned:

1) Apologies to the man who described the Bellevue Club as “historic,” but—apart from the golf course, which is sort of soothing—the building, built in 1979, is actually pretty ugly, at least from the road.

2) Much as I complain about drivers in Seattle, drivers in Bellevue were a hundred times worse, ranging from distracted (the lady on her cell phone who pulled her Lexus from a parking lot directly into my path) to downright mean (the woman in the Volvo who honked loudly at a woman who’d pulled over to give me directions, and wasn’t in her way at all).

3) The 112th route seems to make sense—it goes past a huge number of multifamily condo buildings and businesses, in addition to mostly single-family neighborhoods such as Surrey Downs. It’s not hard to see all those apartment and condo residents taking rail to their jobs or other destinations in downtown Bellevue, Redmond, or Seattle.

4) Bellevue is actually sort of far away—12 miles from the Cola offices, to be precise. I kept thinking Seattle was just around the corner, but 12 miles is a long way for a fair-weather rider like me, especially hauling a computer that seemed to get heavier with each mile that passed.

Neat that you rode though! I'm sure the heat contributed to the feeling of “laptop-weight-increase.”

That and the fact that I was carrying about ten gallons of water.

That's a thing about biking. Besides Bellevue, a lot of interesting places like Golden Gardens or Magnuson Park are “actually sort of far away.” Not a necessarily a big deal if you have that in mind, but it takes a fair amount of time even if it's all trail.

(And for fun: Copenhagen is 91 sq km and Greater Copenhagen 2,862 sq km; Seattle proper is 217 sq km and Seattle-Bellevue-Everett MSA is 11,461 sq km.)

    Ericka:
The 112th Option for Sound Transit is the only one that makes sense, but NIMBYism runs very strong in Bellevue (just witness the brouhaha over the proposed Meydenbauer Park for another example). In fact, when it comes to light rail in Bellevue, it's more like BANANA (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything). Unfortuntately we now have a city council majority that is much more receptive to this notion.

By the way, what golf course did you ride by? I live in Bellevue and ride my bike past the Bellevue Club a lot (usually on the 114th St. side near 405) and I've never seen a golf course in, around or near the club, rolling or otherwise. And you would have had to be really lost if you rode past Bellevue H.S., which is four blocks up on the hill above and west of 112th. That said, Bellevue Way is to be avoided on a bike at all costs; it's never bike friendly, unless you ride on the sidewalk, which isn't advisable.

Maybe I'm mixing up my bus ride in and my bike ride out re the golf course? Definitely rode past Bellevue HS, though — right past the entrance to Surrey Downs. Or maybe it was all a BEAUTIFUL HALLUCINATION.

That's not Bellevue High next to Surrey Downs, that is the King County District Court that is housed at a property that used to be a school.

  • Trey

Umm…yeah, Erica, the only golf course anywhere near there is Overlake Golf Course, in Medina, which is like, 2-3 miles from the Bellevue Club. That must have been some hallucination…

Erica, time for a tour of Bellevue. I grew up in there and would be glad to be your guide. Blueberry picking, South Asian food, awesome public regional library, and the Crossroads Mall!

112th and Bellevue Way is a scary bicycle route. There are nicer bike routes through some of the neighborhoods of Bellevue. I didn't find many pleasant routes through downtown Bellevue, though. I'll take downtown Seattle any day. Bellevue even has a useful map: http://www.bellevuewa.gov/pdf/Transportation/bi…

Erica, perhaps you were on 108th instead of 112th? The back of Bellevue High School is on 108th. The street has single-family houses all around it, while 112th is more open. As for the golf course, Google Maps shows a Golf Tec at 111 108th Ave NE. It looks like a golf training company; perhaps it has a little field?
