Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

NARAL Barred From West Seattle Summerfest

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington, along with other advocacy groups including Planned Parenthood, will no longer be allowed to have a table at West Seattle Summerfest because of concerns by the fest’s organizers, the West Seattle Junction Association, that protests by anti-choice groups included graphic material—namely, pictures of aborted fetuses—that was inappropriate for the annual family gathering in West Seattle’s Alaska Junction district.

NARAL director Lauren Simonds says Junction Association director Susan Melrose told her that “in recent years, the other side hasn’t really appreciated the community aspect of the Summerfest in terms of their visuals.” The ban effects not just pro-and anti-choice groups, but all advocacy groups and religious organizations.

Melrose did not want to speak on the record about the controversy, but said she could confirm Simond’s account of why NARAL was told they couldn’t table at Summerfest, which she called “a community celebration.”

Simonds says NARAL has had a table at Summerfest for nine years; she does not know how many anti-choice protesters have showed up in the past. She says she told Melrose, “As a private organization, they have a right to decide who has a right to table, but she said they felt they didn’t want to have to have arguments about the issue” of abortion.

The West Seattle Summerfest takes place this weekend, July 9-11.

Lame. That's all I can say after deleting all the other versions of my response to this story. If banning all advocacy and religious organizations is a break from previous years I wonder what prompted this move. Pandering to organizations with a history of inflammatory political speech by banning groups that said organizations target is bad policy and not exactly consistent with the West Seattle Junction Association's mission: “(T)o develop, encourage, promote and participate in activities that enhance a healthy economic, social and environmental climate for the West Seattle Junction community.”

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is probably wise not to push the issue — they've got bigger fish to fry than battling with the organizers of a such a nice, apolitical, family-friendly, and now boring festival.

  • tedb310

Sen, you hit it on the head. LAME! I wish I had a NARAL T-shirt to wear there.

  • Marcee Stone

In all the years I have attended the festival and worked as a volunteer at the 34th District Democrats table, I have never witnessed any graphic protests by anti-choice groups. NARAL and Planned Parenthood provide valuable health information for women and in particular women who are in need. I am saddened to hear about this. We have many women in our local communities who could benefit from the information provided by NARAL and Planned Parenthood. What sort of advocacy groups are they talking about? Will there be a booth for the West Seattle Food Bank? That is also advocacy. I hope that there can be more discussion about this and that we can come to a more fair resolution.

  • blah blah blah

I've attended the West Seattle Summerfest for years, and the ONLY problem I've ever had is the jerks at the last chance fire engine display. I can't recall ever seeing any Jesus-freaks protesting, and it is a shame that NARAL and others will be banned because Susan is “uncomfortable” by the thought of political discourse.

I wonder if the 34th District Democrats are included in this ban, and if so, how they feel about it? They are firmly in the “advocacy” camp, too.

  • Magnusragnarsson1

The 34th District Democrats are listed among those with tables/booths, at the top of this page.

  • ktstine

ecb, if you tell me where i can get a NARAL tshirt i will wear it proudly to the summer fest…

  • NoSpin

So the anti-choice terrorists have won…

  • JE

“The ban effects not just…” should be “The ban affects not just…”

  • SEN

You can get T-shirts at NARAL's office:

    NARAL Pro-Choice Washington
    811 First Avenue, Suite 456
    Seattle, WA 98104

  • chris

The statement about the ban affecting all advocacy and religious groups is weird (beyond the word choice issue that JE notes). Is that reporting? Because in addition to the 34th District Democrats (as noted by Magnusragnarsson1) there is also a church on that list, and Sustainable West Seattle–hard not to call them an advocacy group–is a major sponsor.

But, whatever. It's hard not to see this as another step in the ongoing blanding of West Seattle. If you work really hard at it, it can be Redmond by the Sea! Just swap a monster tunnel for a monster bridge…

  • Dorothy

I am a West Seattle resident and have seen the displays they are mentioning. In fact, I have been rather annoyed at the level of photos the anti choice side chooses to show around small kids. I really wish NARAL was not banned – great organization with a very important mission and Planned Parenthood is equally vital. However, I am glad the other side will not be there with their graphic signs.

  • Rvb99922

    you're comment is substantial

  • sarah68

Banning should be based on objectionable material displayed at previous festivals. Thus, the Pro Life people should be banned, not NARAL. Otherwise, you'd have to ban all food sales because they advocate for eating.

  • Meanie

Time to protest the church groups with offensive imagery.

  • tpn

There are some right-wing elements in the w.s. business community. Seems like a way to save face.

  • ivan

Who cares if the fetus fascists come with their bloody signs? It's all they have. This state has been a solid 60-40 pro-choice since the early 1970s, and that's not changing any time soon.

  • N8

Apparently the victory was over the pro-murder NARAL.

  • N8

Josh, has the volunteer copy editor intern started yet? Would love to have these types of comments directed at him if that is the case.

  • First A., folks.

this is with city permit, if NARAL doesn't hire the ACLU and sue they're lame.
And shocking to see commenters here agree, some of them, that groups with “objectionable” speech can be banned.

  • Inconvenient Fact

actually the Washington State initiative that confirmed “choice” won by a bare majority.

  • N8

And “choice” under other circumstances (drunk driver murders a pregnant women and the fetus) can sometime still be considered murder.

And if we are going to allow it, why stop it at birth? why not let “choice” rule until the age of consent. We'll just call it post-natal abortion, not murder.

  • NARALazar

NARAL still plans to be at West Seattle Summer Fest, just not with a booth. Join us to educate the crowd and collect signatures in support of our upcoming legislation on crisis pregnancy centers. You will get a NARAL t-shirt and help spread important information about fake anti-choice clinics in Washington. For more information contact Eleazar Juarez-Diaz, Volunteer and Youth Programs Coordinator at NARAL Pro-Choice Washington (eleazarjuarez-diaz@prochoicewashington.org or at 206-624-1990)

  • N8

Is this against the festival's policies? I doubt that they let outside organizations participate without registering.

  • Dorothy

They can participate to collect signatures. Campaigns and candidates to that all the time. Signature gatherers usually don't register. And actually, I don't think the people at the summer fest will mind at all

  • Dorothy

Glad to hear NARAL still will have a presence!

  • Support Sex Ed

abortions are typically done within the first trimester unless the life of the mother is at stake. So the comment “why stop at birth” is a straw man. I believe life begins at the first breath. You believe differently, great, put your money where you mouth is and donate to organizations seeking to end the death penalty, support condom distribution in schools, support sex ed in schools beyond just the “don't do it” variety.

  • N8

In a world with cultures that allow for honor killings, “why stop at birth” is not a “straw man,” it is simply a different way of looking at the issue from a different cultural standpoint. Maybe one day our culture will continue to morph and one day find it an acceptable practice similar to how we have found abortion and euthanasia acceptable (I would hope not, but it is a possibility).

Most pro choice groups are only pro choice for the women, if you are going to allow for abortions, then at least allow for the father to provide half the cost of an abortion and walk away from financial responsibility and let the women choose what to do from there or let the father choose to take custody of the child if he chooses that he wants to continue forward with the pregnancy that they mutually entered into.

So, sure I can put my money where mouth (or keyboard) is AND I can can continue to use this and other forums.

  • N8

NARALazar mentioned also distributing t-shirts and education the crowd. I bet if a business wanted to distribute t-shirts and educate the crowd without registering that the festival would mind.

  • WSJA

    From West Seattle Junction Association:

West Seattle Summer Fest is a long standing festival focused on art, music and community. In past years, the Festival has received strong negative feedback against how the issue of abortion was being presented. In response to this feedback and in consideration of all parties, we have decided that Summer Fest will not be a venue to promote either side of this issue. Contrary to the article, other non-profits have been accepted into the festival. Our intent is to keep the event enjoyable for all festival goers.

  • ivan

Life begins at birth. That's the law. Sucks to be you if you don't like it.

  • MaryMaryQuiteContrary

First of all, let me state that I am a life-long Democrat and a woman who supports pro-choice, but I find all of this argument simply absurd! Mike Heavey, give me a break (you did lose my vote!)- did you bother to talk to anyone at the West Seattle Junction Association? Do you really believe that the business district of The Junction is anti-Naral? How about pro-family fun? How about the simple act of going to a festival where we can be free of politics? I for one am in favor of banning all of the political brouhaha. This is not the platform for political arguments, don't we have enough of those (ie The WSB?) The antagonism between Naral and Pro-Women's Bondage groups diminishes the family-friendly atmosphere of a simple summer festival.

  • Donolectic

Except, ya know, it's not murder no matter how much you want to pretend it is.

  • Donolectic

    …straw man, they're not a business.

  • N8

And Pro Life is not anti-choice, no matter how much Erica wants to stoop in using biased reporting.

  • N8

Ivan, apparently it doesn't when a drunk person kills a pregnant women in a crash. Let's be consistent.

  • pro-woman

this is so lame. I've been there at the NARAL booth. We are civilized compared to the “Lutherans for Life” who were giving out plastic baby fetuses to three year olds.

  • Donolectic

So having a choice is fine, as long as that choice isn't “murder” right?

  • Jakers

That's right, so the discussion becomes, what is murder, what is life, etc., etc. Apparently in Washington State, we give extra rights to pregnant women to protect their fetus, unless that is they choose to kill it themselves.
