Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

SEIU Makes Another Noteworthy Endorsement

There’s some hot Democrat-on-Democrat action in the race to replace retiring state Rep. Brendan Williams (D-22, Olympia).

And social justice Democrat Chris Reykdal is gaining some momentum. While remaining behind former state Department of Labor and Industries manager and enviro Stew Henderson in fundraising (by about $10,000), Reykdal, a former Tumwater planning commissioner, won the sole endorsement of the politically important Service Employees International Union locals today.

Add that to his sole endorsement from the Washington State Labor Council (along with a long list of other labor endorsements and sole endorsements from state legislature liberals including Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles and Reps. Geoff Simpson, Bob Hasegawa,  Mike Sells, and retiring adamant lefty Williams himself.)

His opponent, Henderson, is focusing on creating green jobs, and has gotten sole endorsements from the Sierra Club and the Washington Conservation voters.

Footnote: When election season began, Camden started a scorecard on “It” Democratic consultant Christian Sinderman. Sinderman is working for Henderson.

He was also working for state Sen. Craig Pridemore, who has since dropped out of his U.S. congressional bid, and state Sen. Ken Jacobsen who has since dropped out of his reelection campaign.

Sinderman’s still got Joe Fitzgibbon, though, who’s picking up steam in his race for the open 34th District state House seat.
