Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

High-Profile Adversaries in Eastside Brawl

In a year when the state Republicans are committed to exploiting the anti-incumbent zeitgeist (and the potential anti-Obama backlash) so they can retake what was once theirs, the Eastside Seattle burbs, there isn’t a more dramatic contest than this one: Former Washington State Republican Party Chair, Diane Tebelius (who saw the Republicans lose the turf under her watch) vs. Democratic incumbent Rep. Ross Hunter (D-48), one of the Eastside Democrats who led the blue wave in the 2000s. Now, as the  House Finance Chair, Hunter is perhaps the Democrat who’s  most responsible for this year’s controversial budget.

While the 2010 budget does do some cool stuff, such as gutting tax loopholes (Hunter’s main contribution), it’s controversial nonetheless, thanks to a series of high-profile taxes on beer, gum, pop, and bottled water.  (The tax increases, about $757 million worth— actually pale in comparison to the billions in budget cuts—amounting to less than 10 percent of the shortfall fix), but that’s probably too much nuance for angry voters.

Hunter and Tebelius are two unusually strong candidates for the state legislature (sorry, state legislature) and this battle is one to watch for both the political significance noted above and for the sheer drama of seeing two heavy hitters go at it.

Hunter has pulled  slightly ahead in fundraising with $31,000 cash on hand to about $18,000 for Tebelius.

Two footnotes on Camden’s he said/she said video:

1) Former Microsoft exec Hunter’s claim about slashing out-of-state tax breaks is accurate, but comes with a major addendum: Microsoft’s licensing division is in Nevada, giving the local company an estimated $100 million annual out from licensing and royalty taxes.

2) Hunter was indeed a leader on education reform, particularly in the 2009 session, when he stood up to the teachers union and passed a bill that expanded the definition of basic education. However, like most reformers on the Democratic side of the aisle, he tempered his commitment to big changes this election year and the 2010 follow-up bill did not track the Obama education reform model that, ironically, GOPer Tebelius praises here.

The incumbent seemed to talk a lot about himself and made an effort to downplay over 2 billion dollar shortfall he helped to create. The challenger seemed to have a handle on the needs we are facing.

  • Barleywine

I loved the PubliCola pop & bubbles at the beginning and the end.

Hunter talked more specifically, but didn't inspire me.
Tebelius really didn't say anything, apart from merit pay. But her blue shirt somehow connected with her eyes. Forehead was a bit shiny and washed out.

I'm going with Tebelius, just on the eyes/shirt thing alone.

    Not long enough.

What would they cut next year?

  • Barleywine

    Grass.

  • Ryan

“How do you participate if you're not even asked?”

You start by presenting an alternate budget proposal, something that the GOP didn't get around to doing this year.

  • http://manywordsforrain.blogspot.com/ Mr. Baker

Themselves for attention on the legislature's House floor?

  • AdvoDog

Wow, this is really insightful. Who from the Tebelius campaign put this comment up?

  • Advodog

Hunter isn't the greatest people person, but he's very very smart and is the rare principled moderate in the Legislature — principled because his moderation is based on actual beliefs rather than poll-based triangulation. He understands the budget better than almost anyone but needs to learn how to explain it in 90 seconds in a way that appeals to swing voters (and even disaffected liberals).

Tebelius's statement about how Hunter can't “compromise” without working with Republicans is ridiculous and ill-informed. Has she ever seen the Democratic caucus? We Seattle liberals wish we just got to tell everyone else what to do, but we don't. There are lots of moderates and even some conservatives in the caucus who disagree with us a lot. If the process of drafting legislation and rounding up votes in an ideologically diverse caucus isn't compromise, I don't know what is. And Hunter is better at this than most legislators are.

The Seattle Times, the same newspaper that endorsed Dino Rossi and Rob McKenna, endorsed Ross Hunter for King County executive last year. He is moderate and impressive. The burden is on Diane to explain why voters should fire him. If I lived in the 48th district I’d vote to re-elect him. Voters who want change (or a Republican) should look into the 47th district. We have a very impressive candidate in Nancy Wyatt. Nancy is the president and CEO of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce and a former president of the Covington Chamber of Commerce. Her husband of 27 years works for Boeing. Voters should retain Hunter in the 48th and support Nancy Wyatt in the 47th.

  • ROTCODDAM

Wasn't Tebelius behind the fraudulent ballot challenge that disenfranchised hundreds of legal King County voters, including County Councilmember Larry Philips?

Dear Lowly Classes – those of us in the bottom 90% or so –

While I can NOT defend Democratic management of community programs, cuz it is generally incompetent,

WHAT have you got from the Republicans, keeping in mind that the people in the Republican party who REALLY call the shots are fascists?

In 30 years, from the Republicans, you have:

    LESS employment security,
LESS re-employment security for your job skills,
    LESS income security,
    LESS housing security,
    LESS healthcare access security,
    LESS quality educational access,
(jo Josh – time to BLAME teachers for systemic rot!)

AND all the Republicans can offer is let the rich pigs at the top,
those who take the most cuz they're on top and they're pigs,
ALL the republicans can do is offer to let the rich pigs TAKE MORE!

the rich pigs who stole handsomely from the banastan wars while the actual warriors get bureaucratic run arounds!

the rich pigs who beat us down with $4 and $5 gallon gasoline until August of 2008! (wasn't the war about energy …)

the rich pigs who took General Motors into bankruptcy,

the rich pigs who rah-rah'd WAMU, Freddie, Fannie, Lehmen, Merril Lynch, Goldman, AIG, Chase, … right into our wallets PERMANENTLY.

While I will NOT vote for 1 Dim-O-Crap incumbent this year, hell will freeze over before I'd ever vote for a deliberate lackey to the fascist string pullers, OR, someone too dim to know they're a lackey.

More tax cuts for rich pigs, OR, they'll take their thieving to Nigeria, Kazakhstan and Paraguay! ha ha ha. anyone stupid enough to think that is a legitimate policy solution – I'll drive you to the voting booth on election day!

    rmm.

PubliCola endorsed Ross Hunter in the KC Executive primary last year as well:

  • Rodney

You guys publish really awful photographs. You could do much better.

  • Josh Feit

Are you referring to the picture of Tebelius? That's a still from the video. I thought it was a good shot.

  • Rodney

Yes, and the still of Hunter. They both have saturation issues, and I've noticed that is the case for the majority of the photographs on the site. It could generally be addressed by deepening the saturation in PS and perhaps increasing the contrast. I always come to PubliCola for the content, and have come to accept that the quality of the photography will not match that of the articles.

  • http://manywordsforrain.blogspot.com/ Mr. Baker

    I did, too.
    Here were my to two's.

  • http://www.rosshunter.com Ross Hunter

My comment is specifically about Rodney's thoughts on the quality of the photos on the site. I'm not an expert here, but the photos they do of the Sounders games are truly excellent.

  • Swita

Ah, come on. These weren't so bad, were they? http://www.publicola.net/2010/04/12/si-se-puede…

  • Teather8288

Washblog called. They want their bizzaro-Andy-Rooney back.

  • Rodney

Hey thanks, those are great. Hope to see more like them.

  • Allisonroundrtree

Democrats have some Progressives to thank for Ross Hunter's challenges. Last summer, when Ross Hunter was polling at a whopping 4% in the race for King County Executive, a bunch of unions spent $50,506.80 to beat up on Ross because of his chairmanship of the Finance Committee: http://www.pdc.wa.gov/querysystem/committees/co…

Working with “progressive” consultant Moxie Media, The Working Families Coalition created hit pieces better than anything the GOP could do this year:
    http://www.baddealhunter.com/

The GOP only needs to pick up a few Democratic seats this year to take the Senate. People need to realize that Democrats don't need GOP enemies when they have friends like their alleged allies.
