Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Democrat Tries to Turn Tables on Republicans in Eastside Burbs Battleground

This post has been updated with Republican incumbent Rep. Glenn Anderson’s comments.

Here’s a man-bites-dog story: 2010 is the year a Democrat in a swing district is going to knock out a Republican. That’s the storyline from candidate Dean Willard, a T-Mobile VP, anyway.  Calling himself the “best chance” for Democrats to steal a House seat occupied by a Republican, Willard kicked off his campaign last night at a wine bar in Issaquah.

Willard is challenging incumbent Rep. Glenn Anderson (R-5, North Bend, Snoqualmie, Issaquah, and portions of unincorporated King County), who outspoken progressive Rep. Geoff Simpson (D-47, southeast King County) described last night as being the most “despised” representative by Democrats.

They say the best defense is a good offense (or something like that) and so, in an election year when Republicans are planning to take seats away from Democrats, especially in Willard’s suburban Seattle turf—Washington’s political battle ground, the Crescent—Willard is clearly the Democrats’ all star candidate.

Several Democratic House members—one from as far away as Olympia—joined Willard at the kickoff. Rep. Ross Hunter (D-48, Bellevue), Rep. Simpson, Rep. Judy Clibborn (D-41, Mercer Island) and Rep. Sam Hunt (D-22, Olympia) were all milling around the packed bar.

Willard’s camp has a good chance of taking the seat from Rep. Anderson, they say. Last election, Anderson was challenged by David Spring, a researcher at the University of Washington who ran a much less professional campaign with much less money, and won 48 percent of 5th district votes, said Sylvester Cann, Willard’s campaign manager. As for money this year: Willard has raised $37,000 to Anderson’s $22,000. And Willard still has about $28,000 on hand, according to the Public Disclosure Commission, while Anderson has just $7,000 on hand.

Willard is running on a platform of tax reform and fully funding basic education. Check out the video for more details, particularly on Willard’s tax reform plan—it’s not what you think.

Rep. Anderson shot back at Rep. Simpson’s “despised” comment with this:

“That’s music to my ears, music to my ears,” he said. “If Glenn Anderson is the single most significant barrier to the progressive agenda in Olympia, that’s not my problem, that’s theirs. I’d love to think I have that much influence, that I could derail what has happened over the last decade. If they have decided I’m at the root of that evil, I think that speaks for itself.”

And in response to Willard’s comments in the video, Rep. Anderson said he’s out listening to voters and understanding their needs, but if Willard wants to bash him, “let him take that to the voters.”

“This is an election where we’ve really moved beyond political platitudes, angry accusatory rhetoric,” Anderson said. “Let’s just get our act together and fix the problem.”

Editor’s Note: PubliCola ran an advertisement for Willard’s campaign kick off this week. Advertising does not affect our coverage. For example, Joe Mallahan, Greg Nickels, and Seattle City Council hopeful David Miller all advertised prominently on PubliCola last year. None of them got our endorsement and some contend our coverage was downright unfair to Mallahan.

  • 5th District Voter

I've lived in the 5th district since 2000, so I've personally seen the change in this district. Dean WILL be the first democrat elected in this district in over 10 years, and it's about time! Glenn's “hands-tied” approach to representing the district is NOT what we want. We need someone who is going to be effective in Olympia, especially on education issues!

5th District voter needs to listen to what Dean dribbled about. No real agenda, a lot of platitudes and if he is disappointed in what the legislature did, then he is complaining about the Democrats, his own party.

From Glenn Anderson, it apears that he himself says that he is useless in the legislature. Maybeit is time that we in the 5th take him off the public payroll and he can grumble about public policy on his own dime.

The reason Republicans have represented the 5th District for the last 10 years is that Anderson, Rodne and Pflug are some of the best legislators in Olympia. Willard, and his ilk, are just piling on more loose platitudes and empty promises without any real answers. Republicans reflect the concern for the bottom line, education and common sense. Glenn Anderson has the pulse of the district and will be re-elected.

Willard, like the Democrats who have started serving the Eastside are very pragmatic and can see both sides of the coin. They are able to reflect the concerns of their district.
What have Anderson, Pflug, and Rodne done for our district?

this guy is a joke…are you serious? is anyone listening to what he actually said? Nothing, he said nothing! people, c'mon, we need change and if we think putting more liberals in office, when they already have an overwhelming majority, is going to change anything, please wake up! They just overwrote a VOTER APPROVED INTIATIVE for raising taxes because they failed to listen to the VOTERS! Wake up people, we are going down the rabbit hole very quickly! If we truly want change, we will not elect this nobody, we will replace the democrat incumbents in other districts. REPLACE THEM!!!

I read the article before watching the video. I read Glenn Anderson's response – Anderson said. “Let’s just get our act together and fix the problem.”

One cannot expect, I think, to keep runnning over and over for 10 years and still expect to be seen as competent when your response is to “get your act together and fix the problem”. After 10 years, you should already have your act together. Perhaps you ARE the problem.

I've lived in the district for longer than Glenn Anderson has been in office, and I can say this is the first I've head from him in 10 years. He's been invisible, and as far as I can tell, ineffective.

Mr. Independent, what is “a lot”. Senator Pflug cannot even defend herself, I've watched her in a debate and she relies on Glenn to stick up for her.
Mr Woodcock, Dean actually had a great speech, those comment were only a sound bite of the entire speech. Dean and his wonderful wife have been an asset to the community, helping at Tent City and supporting the youth symphony.
I'm sure that you formed your opinion from just what you have seen on the video, the ramblings on “Sound Politics” and whatever your personal biases are.

  • Is Willard related to Ben?

John – Anderson has been in the minority, his comments about “getting it together” were aimed at the dysfunctional majority. Odd that most of Willard's comments sounded very conservative on repealing B&O (which will never happen w. a D majority) and reform. That isn't the D platform at all.
No matter, Anderson will probably be fine. He was in a relatively close race last year at the high point in the D tide. Spring ran a very personally-ugly campaign at Anderson and it didn't work. Very unlikely that Willard will be able to go beyond that.
Also for Publicola, Maple Valley and part of Black Diamond are also in the district, with Maple Valley being one of the biggest population centers in the 5th. Anderson has been highly visible and active in the Maple Valley/Black Diamond area.

I asked for an example of Anderson's work in the legislature…….

The problem with your statement is that it's not a fact, it hasn't happened yet, so you don't know it and you just come off as looking like an idiot. No wonder you dislike liberals, you don't understand how “idea's” (or apostrophes apparently) work.

Yes, you need to replace Geoff Simpson with someone who may disagree with some constituents but is actually capable of engaging voters in a dialog rather that his one-sided diatribes. The guy is evil–please give the 47th District Democrats a better choice than Simpson. And yes, I do believe that he was an abuser!

Anderson is in the minority, because the views and policies of his party do not represent the majority of voters in Washington state.

And as I mentioned, other than election cycles, I've never heard of the guy. And I do live in Maple Valley.

I have heard much more about David Spring, and Dean Willard, and I have a favorable opinion of both. .

Well hey… if you like what's going on in Olympia, dump the last bastion of sense in King County and vote for the D challengers running against Glenn, Jay, and Cheryl. I've known all of our reps and senators in the 5th personally since 1994, and there are no 3 more level-headed people representing a district anywhere in the state. If you want go-along clowns, vote these people out, but you will be canning the last of the very people on the wet side of the state that ask the reality questions and try hard to inject some modicum of sense into Olympia's deliberations.
Are they fully effective, some may ask? I'd say no, in a legislature and executive dominated by Democrats who wish reality would conform to their ideals, but as I look back to what was warned by them 4, even 6 years ago, dammit.. they were right.. here we are, just as predicted would be the case.. blown budgets, county looking to re-assess property tax rates upwards for more “revenue”, not enough money for the infrastructure, education, health care and public security everyone thinks government should provide (part of the problem, methinks).

It's not a zero-sum game, it's been negative balance for 8 years (at least), and Glenn (for one) has been saying for at least that long “This is not sustainable, people”.The solution is not more “yes men”, which is what the challengers are promising to be (read their literature folks: “we'll be better able to work with the powers that be in Olympia”). Yea, right,
We need to junk the “more taxes more spending” legislators and get back within a budget we can afford. Glenn has been leading that point for a lot longer than 8 years. We can do what needs to be done without bankrupting (or driving out) everyone in the state, we need legislators that will listen to someone like Glenn who articulates that approach.
OK, Glenn's “the most despised legislator in Olympia”. but that's because most of the D folk down there don't handle “I told ya so” well. People dont like reality to be stuffed in their face when they're wrong, and certainy don't like it when someone points out they were told they were wrong back when they decided to put ideology and hope above basic economics and pragmatism – two aspects that Glenn has a vast amount of experience with (and of which his opponent, like just about every other clown the D's have put up against him in the 5th District over six of the last 8 years, is completely ignorant, – one election they didn't even bother as they knew they had nobody even remotely credible)..
Look folks, the solution is not even MORE D's in the legislature, we need people that are looking to how this state will be sustainable in 10 to 20 years, not just how they can get re-elected in two.
Don't buy this BS.. The solution isn't getting rid of legilators like Glenn or Jay or Cheryl, we are in desperate need of a lot more like them if we want this state to be somewhere we and out children want (heck, can afford), to live in.

Uh, Johh.. dude.. did you just crawl out from under a slab? Where the heck you been for the last fifteen + years?

I've hiked the Cascades and Rocky's with Glenn and 'Liz, spent countless hours discussing the misguided philosophies of this state in alpine meadows, in his office down in Olympia, in their kitchen and on their deck with Jay, trying to figure out how to convince the rest of the legislators and governor that we need to rethink our approach to “governance” and sustainable essential services to our citizens. Where have *YOU* been all these years?

Education? Glenn's been in the middle of it for a decade, looking for ways this state can be effective in delivering real education necessary for the growth of this state and it's citizens and their kids – even though neither they nor we have children in the system.. this ain't selfish interests for them or us.. although it does have a personal relevance to Jay and Cheryl and *their* families – it is the future of our state.

Glenn, with his knowledge, experience, and moxie, can make a heck of a lot more money in the private sector than the pittance the legislators get. . (I make more in 4 months than they get all year, and he's a heck of a lot better educated and knowledgeable than I), but that ain't what it's about for him. This isn't a hobby, or something to keep occupied with after retirement, this is looking down line a decade or three and seeing where we're gonna be. Yea, he's in the “minority”, but that's one of the reasons this state is as screwed up as it is. On the other hand, it's because of legislators like Glenn, Jay and Cheryl that it's not even more screwed up than it is – they keep interjecting reality into the process, and occasionally (and even more lately) their counsel, protests and ideas get heard (and at least considered). Even some of the D's realize what they've been doing and the way they've been going about it the last 10 years has screwed the pooch.
How about another “special session” since the money the legislators thought they were gonna get from the Feds to bail 'em out didn't come about? Guess who said that was pie in the sky?

Sure as shootin it wasn't Willard and his party.

As I've heard Glenn say many times “'Hope' is a lousy fiscal policy. A promise and $4 will get you a latte at Starbucks. Make sure you have the $4 in your pocket when you walk in the door. The promise might get you extra foam.”

The D's have been betting on getting extra foam for 4 years at least. It ain't workin.

One last time.. where the heck have you been you haven't seen this goin on?

Where do I start, mbarer? Highway 18? Sunset Way? The underpass in Issaquah finally in the works? The fly-over on 520 from 202? The local school districts able to keep their teachers? Various new park-n-rides. The Basic Health Care that *IS* provided? The taxes NOT raised? When you're in the minority, oft times it's not what happens, it's the *really bad* ideas that don't get out of committee and don't happen, that have the bigger impact. There's a lot of those, and it's hard to report news about things that don't happen. The minority party usually plays defense – that's always the case, But what you don't realize is that a lot of good stuff in the district has happened over the years without a lot of fanfare – let others get the credit if that's what they're looking for, the object is to get the job done. If state stuff happens in the district, it's not because Seattle or Spokane legislators pushed for it. a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff you take for granted.and barely notice (if you notice at all) happens because of what they work and negotiate for, not because of just dumb luck and blind fortune..

If you want more detail, make an appointment at any one of their offices in Olympia to go chat. I've never had a problem getting time with any of our representatives. If you are ignorant of what they do or how they do it, that's your fault, not theirs.

Desribing the problem isn't solving the problem. Glenn himself makes the best arguments against his own re-election by saying himself that he can't get the job done from the minority.

The House Democratic majority may decrease but it's very unlikely the House Republicans will gain a majority in 2010. It's time to elect someone that will be a member of the majority caucus with the influence and the consensus building skills to deliver real fiscal and tax reform.

Glenn can talk about fiscal reform all he wants but he's not getting the job done.

    Hi Steely,

Where have I been? I've been at work. I'm glad you had a great time hiking the Rockies and Cascades with Glenn and got to spend countless hours in alpine meadows disscussing what you view as misguided politics. In the meantime, we've been here in the district for years and years, and as Gleen comes and goes, it does not really add much value to our daily lives. Good to know you're having a good time….
