Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Ouch: Rossi Giving Tips on How to Profit Off Foreclosures

No one can accuse the insanely even-keeled The National Journal of political bias. So there’s no way to chalk this one up to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and all the desperate anti-Dino Rossi stories they’ve been peddling lately. (In fact, it was the National Journal, which we linked in Fizz late last week, that just trashed Democratic Rep. Jay Inslee.)

Today’s National Journal blurb on Dino Rossi is a hilarious zinger. Rossi is headlining at a conference teaching real estate investors how to profit off foreclosures.

The DSCC couldn’t have made that one up if they tried.

Among the top 8 lessons participants will learn include: “The 7 critical mistakes you do NOT want to make when buying foreclosures”; “How to consistently earn over a 50% ROI [return on investment] per year buying and selling foreclosures”; and “The 9 secrets behind Washington’s most successful foreclosure investors.”

what about lesson #9….How to leverage a potential run for the senate and two failed gubernatorial runs into better name recognition and higher speaking fees?

  • hoary

Well if he runs for senate and loses I guess he'll just have to go back to making millions of dollars in real estate. That'll show him. Wait a second…

  • Poindexter

I don't like Rossi. I think he's sleazy in general, but not in this case. After all, he's not causing the foreclosures. We want people to buy foreclosures from the banks in order to give the banks more liquidity and keep up prices in the housing market. It's sad that people are losing their houses, but I see no problem with people buying those houses afterward.

  • N8

Also having a strong dislike for Rossi, it pains me to agree with your point.

  • SNCC Kid

Why the “ouch”? It's a buyer's market right now, and Rossi is encouraging small investors to buy. Who else do you think is going to buy foreclosed properties? The government? No you dolts, not everyone wants to live in government housing.

And what's this you say, his participation is going to fund a charitable cause? Ronald McDonald House? Oh my! Can't be seen helping sick kids. Fail to see how that's a “hilarious zinger.”

What if Rossi green-washed his real-estate investments, like the main investor in this “startup”? Would that make his capitalism more palatable to you?

springsm. Gee I can’t stand the jerk either, but like Zecharis, who collected more taxes than necessary to live a good life, I compare Rossi with him, buys foreclosed homes, hires some “stellare” real estate person to sell them, makes a chunk and then runs for office. The State of WA has not paid enough attention to this guy. yuk True, it is legal and easy…he does it.
