Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Trikes and Beer and Bikes and Beer

Beer is the central theme of this weekend (more so than usual, at least). Not only does this weekend mark the start of Seattle Beer Week, there are also two awesome looking events on Sunday with heavy ties to suds.

The Seattle Trike Race

The Seattle Trike Race sounds like an event for toddlers, but it is definitely geared towards the drunken daredevil crowd. Racers meet at 1 p.m. at Targy’s Tavern at the top of Queen Anne. After an hour and a half “race prep,” the tricyclists line up at 7th and Blaine and bomb down Queen Anne to the finish line at the Steamline Tavern at Mercer St and 2nd Ave W.

You won’t catch me hurtling myself down the hill on a trike, but it sounds like an amazing spectating opportunity.

Sunday, May 16, 1 p.m. $5 suggested donation

New Belgium Urban Assault Ride

New Belgium’s Urban Assault Ride is a giant, checkpoint-to-checkpoint race around Seattle. Starting from Freerange Cycles in Fremont, teams of two compete to finish a series of checkpoints (which involve things like adult-sized big wheels and slip-and-slides) in the least amount of time possible. There will be a big party at the finish line with a bunch of prizes raffled off and plenty of New Belgium Beer.

At $60 per person, the event is too rich for my blood, but if you’ve got cash to burn I’m sure it will be a ton of fun and, as a bonus, money raised from beer sales benefit Bike Works in Columbia City.

Sunday, May 16 9 a.m., $60

Hope everyone has a blast and the worse injury is a scraped knee!

Reading stuff like this makes me hate Fayetteville even more. April 19th 2012 can't get here soon enough.
