Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

The Morning Blotter: Jogger Fights Off Attacker At Greenlake

A woman told police she was attacked by a man who grabbed her and tried to force her off a trail at Greenlake last week, a police report says.

According to the report, the woman was running south on the Greenlake trail near the stadium at the south end of the lake at about 10:00am on April 11th, when she was a man walking towards her. The woman thought the man “looked suspicious because he was wearing a big puffy jacket” when it was warm outside, and also appeared to be “sizing her up.”

The woman tried to go around the man, but the man stepped in front of her several times, blocking her path. The man then grabbed the woman around her waist “and tried to push her off the road and into some bushes,” the report says.

The woman struggled to get free, punching the man—who, the report says, did not say anything during the attack—in the shoulder.

As this was happening, another jogger ran by, apparently startling the suspect, who then fled.

The woman ran to her car and called police. Officers were not able to find the man in the park.

Who would think something like this would happen at 10 a.m. on a Sunday?! Do you have a better description and more precise location? I run around Green Lake several days a week, and I can’t visualize a location where this could have occurred without someone noticing. It feels to me that no one is ever alone at Green Lake. Was this the inner or outer trail?

I was saying out loud to myself, “at 10:00 AM on a Sunday and it’s ‘warm’ outside!…what?” then saw your post. I agree, this seems a bit weird.

Big Puffy Coat means a black male – its code.

Right – white guys never wear puffy coats? Get real. I have seen many white guys with ridiculously puffy coats…
