Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

They want a Revolution

Tonight:

Little Dragon, a Swedish outfit with the kind of dreary-string infused soul-jazz thump you’d expect from a bunch of Nordiques, are coming to the Nectar Lounge‎ tonight. Singer Yukimi Nagano, who is the most gorgeous woman alive for the second year running, has a voice like a soul butterfly. Tonight at 9 pm at Nectar (412 N. 36th Street). Tickets are $12.

Tomorrow:

Local nonprofit Powerful Voices seeks to address the impact of violence on young women by doing programs in public schools and the juvenile justice system—and they want a revolution. GIRLvolution is the organization’s first-ever youth led conference for  educators, juvenile justice employees, social workers,  community organizers, and young people.

Young women age 15-17 will present workshops on topics like teen dating violence, adult vs. youth power dynamics, and high school drop out rates.  They’ll be accompanied by performances from girls in the Powerful Poets program.

Tomorrow 9am-3pm at Asian Counseling and Referral Services (3639 Martin Luther King Jr. Way).  Adults $25, youth free.

The Weekend’s Full All-Outdoor Calendar:

After weeks of cold and rain, it’s supposed to be beautiful out tomorrow.  Celebrate by preparing the Burke-Gilman trail for long summer bike rides:  Green Seattle hosts a Burke-Gilman restoration project to clear invasive blackberries from the trail.  Tomorrow, 9:30am-12:30pm.  Meet at 5212 NE 60th St.

You know how when the days get longer and the sun comes out in Seattle, everybody in the city hits the streets, faces tilted toward the sky?  Street fairs like HONK! Fest West are the perfect venue to soak it all in—over 20 bands from the US and Canada will fill the Central District with music all day tomorrow.  Tomorrow, 10am-evening, Historic Washington Hall (153 14th Ave).  Free and open to the public.

In case two outdoor events aren’t enough for you on a beautiful April weekend, check out the Crossing to Haiti 5K on Sunday, a run/walk to support Haitian relief efforts.  Go to watch, or it’s still not too late to sign up.  Sunday at 11am, the waterfront at Magnuson Park (6500 Sand Point Way).

Interesting calendar. I'm curious why the immigration rally that is supposed to draw more than 10,000 people to Seattle (Occidental Park, 11am) from across the state isn't included. I guess Goldy was right: http://horsesass.org/?p=26149

“Full all-outdoor calendar”? Except for the largest pro-immigrant rights rally in the country, right in our backyard. Join the action and make your voice heard! Our immigrant brothers and sisters need your support. Occidental Park, tomorrow.

Are you part of the media that Goldy was talking about?

Thanks for calling our attention to the oversight.
We've done a separate post now to announce the event.
