King County prosecutors have filed charges against an 18-year-old gang member who allegedly opened fire on a man in South Seattle in an attempt to settle an ongoing feud.
Prosecutors say Oswald Reynant Bandul Baccay, 18,—who police records indicate is a “self-admitted gang member with multiple gang ties”—fired a half-dozen rounds at the man after Baccay showed up at 39th Ave S and S Juneau to back a friend in a dispute with three brothers who live on the block.
According to court documents, the somewhat-convoluted incidents that led up to the shooting began several weeks earlier when a friend of Baccay’s, Melchor Lucas—a member of the Insane Boyz, a Crip affiliated group in South Seattle—accused three brothers of attempting to burglarize his home.
On March 21st, court records say Lucas and a group of friends “jumped” two of the brothers, and the next day, Lucas found that someone had smashed in the back window of his car with a brick. Records say he believes the three brothers were responsible.
On April 1st, court records say Lucas and several friends “began circling” the brothers’ home at 39th and Juneau at 9:00am, stopping in front of the house every so often to threaten the brothers.
At about 3:30, Lucas and his friends stopped by the home again and challenged the brothers to come outside and fight One man came out of the house “and was yelling at the group to either get out of their cars and fight or to just leave,” court records say.
Prosecutors say Baccay then pulled up to the scene and climbed out of a gold Dodge Dynasty, carrying a black handgun. Court records say Baccay fired one round in the air, then pointed the gun at one of the brothers and fired five more shots.
Police immediately received a number of 911 calls about gunfire near 39th Ave S and S Juneau and quickly arrived on scene.
Police contacted the three brothers, all in their late teens and early twenties who, court records say, told police “they had been shot at by an Asian male…in a gold older domestic boxy car.”
Detectives interviewed Lucas and another man, Jesse Carrido, who identified Baccay as the gunman.
Baccay later surrendered to police at the South Precinct.
Baccay admitted he had driven to the home at 39th and Juneau to shoot the brothers and told police he had fired his gun before fleeing the scene.
Court records say Baccay has a previous conviction is for theft, making it illegal for him to possess a handgun.
Baccay is currently being held in the King County Jail.
