Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Seattle Pizza and Coffee Mogul Charged With Assault, DUI, And Hit And Run

City prosecutors have filed assault, hit and run, and DUI charges against Seattle restaurateur Michael McConnell after he allegedly crashed into, and then attacked, another motorist near Seattle University last week.

McConnell has ties to a number of Seattle restaurants and business ventures. McConnell owns the Caffe Vita and Via Tribunali chains, is the co-owner of Pike Street Fish Fry, former owner of Cremant, and investor or partner in Vellottii Pizza, the Capitol Hill Block Party and the Crocodile Cafe, where McConnell co-hosted a fundraiser for Mayor Mike McGinn, King County Executive Dow Constantine and City Attorney Pete Holmes in September.

According to a police report, a man told police he was sitting in his car waiting for the light at James St and Broadway at about 6:00pm on March 31st when black Mercedes, apparently occupied by McConnell, crashed into him from behind.

Both drivers pulled off of the road but, the report says, but McConnell refused to give the victim his information. The report notes the victim smelled alcohol on McConnell’s breath.

McConnell’s attorney—who was driving another vehicle behind McConnell—tried to intervene, the police report says, and told the victim “they would give him $1,500 to pay for the vehicle damages and not call police.”

McConnel then “refused to pay any money,” the report says, and walked away from the scene. According to the report, McConnell returned a short time later, grabbed the victim, and punched him “with both fists in the chest.” McConnell then walked off toward the Seattle University campus, leaving his Mercedes at the scene.

Police arrived at the scene of the accident and found that the Mercedes was registered to Caffe Vita. Officers went to the coffee shop to try to locate McConnell, but staff told police they had not seen him since the morning. Employees then informed officers that McConnell also owns Via Tribunali down the street from Vita, where police found McConnell a short time later.

According to the report, McConnell admitted he’d been involved in the accident, but his attorney—who was apparently with him at the restaurant—told police the other driver had told McConnel “to pay $1,500 or he would call police.”

Police arrested McConnell and transported him to the East Precinct—which is just up the street from Caffe Vita—where, the report says, McConnell refused a breathalyzer test.

Court records say McConnell has entered a not guilty plea on all charges. McConnell could not immediately be reached for comment.

Several of McConnell’s businesses currently serve beer or liquor—the Washington State Liquor Control Board approved a liquor license application for Caffe Vita’s Capitol Hill location just last month—and a conviction for DUI could potentially affect McConnell’s licenses.

According to WSLCB spokeswoman Anne Radford, “If we are aware of a licensee who has some criminal convictions, we could seek cancellation of their liquor license.” Radford also says the city could see to block any future renewals of McConnell’s liquor licenses.

McConnell is scheduled to appear in Seattle Municipal Court for a hearing on May 3rd.

Update: City Attorney Pete Holmes’ spokeswoman Kimberley Mills just called to let us know that he is “recusing himelf” from any participation in the case, because of his prior relationship with McConnell.

The case will be overseen by the city’s criminal division chief, Craig Sims. “[Pete] won’t know about [the case] and as such won’t be making any decisions about it,” Mills says.

    Dear DAWWNA,

We regularly report on charges being filed, and I’m not sure what “context” you were looking for. I contacted McConnell’s office this morning before posting, and he has yet to respond. If there’s context missing here, I’d be more than happy to speak him about it.

Now as far as your claim that this is just a “battle of words”: even if you ignore the assault and DUI allegations, the report clearly indicates that McConnell left the scene of an accident, which is illegal.

And for the record, I didn’t put anyone’s job at risk. McConnell (allegedly) did when he (allegedly) got behind the wheel while drunk.

  • 200 people’s integrity at risk

@Does Any Write Worthy News Any

Do ANY of the employees of McConnell take personal responsibility for their own actions, or do you all just attack with two fists and blog insults?

  • Alan

    Great, measured response, Jonah.

This story deserves to be told and not on McConnell’s terms. He or his reps can chime in.

As long as that camp is silent, I’ll vote with my dollars and spend ‘em elsewhere.

A business owner was arrested. It wouldn’t take any blog’s posting for the WSLCB to take notice and consider action.

    Kudos to the report.

  • someone with a brain who under

You know what, Mr “I’m too drunk to even write a subject line correctly”.

This is an excellent publication. Hands down the best blog covering Seattle politics there is. The fact that you attack the messenger speaks volumes about the type of person you are.

If your buddy there needs his lawyer to follow him around everywhere he goes, that throws a red flag WAY UP! It’s pretty obvious that his lawyer, who’s right behind him every step of the way, can’t even protect him from himself.

Why don’t you be his friend and get him some help for his alcohol addiction instead of just dickriding and pretending he didn’t just screw himself, his partners and his employees with his own (well-known might I add) drunken behavior. I’m sure he can’t believe that he finally got caught and that he couldn’t “just make it go away” like he’s done every other time.

  • agree

Doubt they’ll even come back to view the responses.

It appears that “hit & run” is their hipster creed! (giggle)

  • Watson

Good reporting – Seattlecrime.com should use this incident as a gateway into investigating McConnell’s other “business ventures”.

  • thomasa hudsin

As a former PO, there has been at least one crime committed here…his lawyer should have offered to settle it on the spot rightaway for a lot more than than $1500 but then again his attorneys are going to make a lot more than that when all is said and done. What most people do not realize is that refusing a breath-test is the best thing you can do if you do not want to cop to your responsibility-unlike Randy Dorn who has stepped up and owned his crime.

He’s got a ton of money to spend so that helps..

Regardless of his alleged checkered and rumored history, it does appear he’s done something wrong here..let’s wait and see what happens at trial…be a shame if the business and employees were impacted because of this guy’s reckless and life threatening behavior. But maybe someone who has a drinking problem should not be permitted to serve the greater public…?

Interesting to see what happens when his attorney–who knows disbarment is a possibility if he lies in McDonnell’s defense–becomes involved in the trial.

  • Lboz

Good Point! I think there is a LOT to investigate where his name is attached!

  • shanana

I recall an episode of CSI where a cop’s dad hit someone while driving drunk, and called his daughter for advice. The cop told her dad to take a shot from bottle before the rest of the cops showed up–that way any breathalyzer or even eyewitness accounts from the cops about him being drunk or smelling of booze would be moot: they can’t prove he was drunk when he committed the crime, and he can just say he had a few drinks after the accident to calm his nerves.

I can’t help but think this is exactly why McConnell and his lawyer went to Via Trib after the accident. What are the odds they were sharing a bottle of vino when the cops finally found him?

  • WenG

I’m not reading hearsay. If JSL is wrong, I’m sure he’ll post an update. What amazes me is that McConnell is the kind of kingpin who rolls with his lawyer in what, a convoy? I’m sure he has the means to settle. McC is the only person answerable to his 200 employees, and it sounds like they don’t lie about his whereabouts. My question: is he chaperoned by counsel 24/7?

  • what’s the deal?

I don’t know McConnell personally, but I do know that gives lot in his community- something that has earned my respect and my business in the past.

This report has left me disappointed in his actions, like @thomasa said, regardless of whether or not the allegations are true, the two have done something wrong. BUT, it seems like a lot of people are jumping to conclusions and rooting for him to go down. Why is that?

  • BB

Lot’s of reasons for people to talk trash about Mike, and more friends that really know some of the great things that he’d involved in—and one just happens to be going on tonite—the 3rd SEATTLE SOUNDBITE— at The Showbox SODO. Numerous restaurants offering inexpensive “bites” and several bands playing—each band having at least one member that works in the restaurant biz. And the proceeds go to The Vera Project, WRASC ( a restaurant association org. training folks for a profession) and ProStart. Tasty food, great music and it benefits lots of young folk.( And one of the major sponsors/organizers is Caffe Vita) Whatever happened that night certainly sucks for all parties, but Mike certainly does quite a bit for the community, and is humble about it. GO OUT TONITE AND SUPPORT THIS EVENT. And call a cab, or if you happen to be out with a friend who also is your lawyer, both of you call a cab…

  • none of your business

only half of the people commenting on this report have ever even met the guy. Granted, there’s some good in it, but overall he is a piece of shit that always has others doing the dirty work for him. He thinks that money can buy and “fix” anything. BTW, it is Caffe Vita that supportd all these events, but in most cases MIke has nothing to do with it. It’s the guy behind the scenes that makes him shine. The main reason why he hired a lawyer in the first place is because the lawuer is a newbie that was thought well be his predecessor and he is cheap. So cheap that he is on Mike’s payroll fulltime.

  • interesting story

He was sharing a bottle of vino at TRIB? – give me a break, this sounds like the script was written long time ago. The victim should have just called the cops immediately without negotiating with His lawyer (“his friend” who also happens to be on his payroll hahahaha just too funny) goes around town with him just so he can intemidate people that do business with him. I think that the people in this city should sabotage Caffe Vita, Via Tribunali and everything else that belongs to M. McC…..the people that work for him are mostly unhappy anyway, since many of them get a shitty treatment anyway.

  • integrity

He needs to grow up and be responsible for his actions. Not roll around town with his lawyer on his leash. Goos story seattlecrime.com
keep us posted on what happens next with this case.

  • halisg

It’s illegal to compromise a potential criminal charge by settlement offer. The lawyer should have known that.

  • Hmm

Hint. Following the money in political donations.

  • Dr. Dimwit

These antics remind me of those douchebags in MadRad. Same kind of situation: get drunk, do something stupid, break the law, then blame other people. Maybe MadRad can play a benefit show for McConnell. If Terry Radjaw and Mike McConnell both ended up drunk and fighting each other on stage I’d pay $5 to see those losers slug it out.

  • disinterested party

I won’t deny that crimes committed by prominent persons are of public interest and qualify as news. Beyond that, the rancor I’m seeing here seems a bit overblown.
I think that we sometimes mistake prominent people for politicians and assume that they are more accountable to the public than the anonymous masses are. It sounds like McConnell committed some crimes here; he should be prosecuted and have his day in court like anyone else. Should we target his businesses? I can’t see why. It would be naive to think that there are not many businesses run by ill-tempered people with drinking problems. Should he be investigated for other shady doings? Again, I can’t see much reason. No doubt he has some skeletons in his closet, but I doubt that this traffic incident was part of any ongoing criminal enterprise. Should his businesses lose their liquor licenses? That’s the WSLCB’s call, but I don’t see this incident as much affecting his employees’ ability to serve liquor responsibly.

  • Milk Toast

This individual event, while lamentable in and of itself, is almost Roman in scope. Hipsters screwing Seattle.

  • Silver in Ballard

Yup, that occurred to me also.

  • Silver in Ballard

If I had that kind of money I’d at least drive something fun or interesting! A Mercedes is just so… republican!

  • deserving

This guy and his sleazebag lawyer have been pulling off and undercutting people since they joined forces. Ask his ex-wife.McConnell cheats his investors and his employee’s. His “benefits” or are for his benefit. As the saying goes, “What goes around, comes around”

  • Morgan Jackson

I know many who have dealt with this guy – he is getting what is coming to him. He is a jerk to 95% of the people in this world. This does not surprise me at all. The guy acts like a hi 15yr old – rollin around in his nice cars all day long. Get a hair cut, shower, shave, put some shoes on, maybe a button shirt and get off the coke dude. The “dive” bar he is building next to Vita is a perfect touch – just what the hood needs – sums Mike up.

  • disinterested party

I’m interested in what you’re talking about, but I don’t think I’ll track down his ex-wife. Care to be a bit more specific?

  • Former Employee

When I heard of the news, did it surprise me? Absolutely not. I worked for this man for a very long time. I am really shocked that he hasn’t made the news more often… He is out for himself, all ego, all the time. His contributions to the community, are selfless and self image boosters, believe me. His employees (males or females) go over and beyond to keep things hush hush for him, for years. He’s a good talker and will make you believe anything that comes out of his mouth. Most employees that are hired, are only hired because of their looks and their connections. Don’t be fooled by this man, he is very smart as he is stupid. I love that he’s an “East” sider by heart, with an Irish last name that wants to be an Italian, “Tony Soprano”.
Drinking and driving, we’ve all done it, but seriously, he does it all the time. The popping of pills, coke etc… It’s as if he wants to lose everything, even himself. His marriage has sucked and has suffered from the get-go. His poor kids, well, you can only imagine… I’ll keep those stories to myself. There is so much more to write. I’ll end here. This “recent” doing, is only the tip of the iceberg. If you work for him, you will feel yourself start to go crazy slowly… There is so much more to write. I’ll end here.

  • Kujira

I have no idea who this guy is, so all the personal stuff doesn’t matter to me. All I can see is some guy has possibly committed some crimes and then handled the aftermath in a very irresponsible and childish way.

This is the only way class-acts like this guy get any notice by us non-hipster-type Seattleites.

  • striker

Perhaps the best way to show this fool, greedy and selfless bastard is to stop going to his business’s.
STRIKE…. CAFE VITA, VIA TRIBUNALI, CROCODILE CAFE and any other establishment McConnell owns. Tell your friends!!!

  • who cares

This guy is a joke, he is confused, he was born here, with Irish heritage, pretending to be Italian. Great combination. It seems that he has always been something he is not……YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT…..!
I have dealt with him a long time ago and deep down he is the complete ass**** that everyone else thinks he is. He pretends to care for his employees, but reality is that unless you are good looking or you have connections, he will just treat you like a piece of sh*t. He doesn’t care how long you have worked for him and how loyal you might be. All he cares about is himself and how to
“pretend” to be something he is definitely NOT. HE IS NOT A NICE GUY………:)

  • Venom

This guy has a ton of money and pays a buttload of taxes
so he will probably get a slap on the wrist and pay a few fines.Ive heard a
few different stories about this guy before this incident
and none of them were positive.I can tell by the comments on here they must be true.Karma is screwing this guy a bit to bad its not Bubba in a cold damp cell.I wouldnt be surprised if one day he turned up face down in the Puget Sound.

  • Rhonan

McConnell’s actions became clearly newsworthy and significant the minute the City Attorney had to recuse himself from the case. How the police and courts treat the prominent and elite is always newsworthy. Covering those stories is the only way we can tell that rule of law is being maintained, or if the rich and connected are being given free passes. It is also the only way to know if people who have ruffled some feathers are being retaliated against.

  • Whatsup?

Any update on these cases? It is an ugly story and needs to be covered.

I did some searches on the court website but couldn’t find anything.
