Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Gregoire Blasts McKenna’s Health Care Reform Lawsuit

The governor trashed Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna in a press conference this afternoon when she was asked about his decision to join attorney generals from 12 other (mostly red) states in filing a lawsuit against the federal government for the health care reform bill Congress passed yesterday.

“He may represent the people of Florida, but not on the dime of the people of Washington,” Gregoire said.

She found out about his decision when one of her aides brought her a newspaper this morning. She was evidently flabbergasted and immediately called McKenna and, according to her, asked him what he was doing, asked him why he hadn’t consulted with her, and told him his decision was way out step with the her office and the majority leaders in the legislature.

“(McKenna) better be ready to represent me,” Gregoire said, half joking, because she would legally oppose his decision by filing a brief in opposition that the AG would have to argue.

It’s McKenna’s job to protect the people of Washington when he files suit, and Gregoire was baffled as to how this would protect Washingtonians.

“Whom does he represent?” she asked. “Not small businesses in Washington, not those on Medicare, not young people up to age 26,” she said running through the list of people getting help from the Democratic health care bill. She continued: “He does not represent those with pre-existing conditions, not the hospitals whose emergency rooms to which people without medical insurance go. He does not represent the Speaker [of the House] (Rep. Frank Chopp), the Majority Leader (Sen. Lisa Brown), or the governor. Last I checked, we represent the people of this state.”

When she was asked whether she thought this had anything to do with his aspirations for the governorship, she said, “You’ll have to ask him.”

For McKenna’s statement on his decision to join the suit check out our riginal post.

Gov. Gregoire released an official statement later in the day:

“I’m disappointed that the Attorney General would participate in a lawsuit to repeal a law that would help 1.5 million Washingtonians get access to affordable, quality health care.

“I completely disagree with the Attorney General’s decision and he does not represent me.

“He doesn’t represent the people of Washington who would get assistance so they could afford quality health insurance.  He doesn’t represent the thousands of small businesses that would benefit from tax credits to provide coverage for their employees.  He doesn’t represent the thousands who will no longer be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition.  He doesn’t represent the half million young people in our state who would be covered under their parents plan until they are 26.  He doesn’t represent our state’s Medicare recipients.  He doesn’t represent the taxpayers of Washington.

“This is landmark legislation that will cover over 32 million Americans who don’t have health care.  I have made it clear to the Attorney General that I will actively oppose this lawsuit if it moves forward.”

Try as I might, I cannot muster anything but contempt for all the liberals and Democrats I know who have told me that they thought McKenna was a “moderate” and that he was the one Republican they had no problem supporting.

NOW do you get it, you fools? He's a right-wing tool, like all the other right-wing tools. He shouldn't get elected to ANY office in this state again!

  • http://www.joeszilagyi.com/ Joe Szilagyi

If McKenna doesn't back down, she better fucking fight him all the way to the Supreme Court over this.

  • joetoo

Sorry Joe – You don't speak for the people of Washington State either. His job is to uphold the constitution of the State of Washington independent of political whims.

  • Scooby

Go Rob – this whole bill is ridiculous!

  • MudBaby

McKenna is a douche for filing a whiny-ass lawsuit that is a ridiculous waste of public money in a tight budget year. It may win him votes on the east side, but not enough to ever become governor.

  • CTJ3

McKenna is way out of line here. Is he representing Washington or Texas?

Fuse has a petition up telling him to drop the lawsuit: http://www.fusewashington.org/page/s/mckenna

  • Chris Stefan

I've been known to vote for a Republican or two in my time, but McKenna has never been one of them. I knew he was a slimy douchebag back when he was on the County Council.

  • Soapboxin'

It's weird, though, because when you hear McKenna in his regular interviews on KUOW, he sounds great. When he sticks to issues we can all agree with, like identity theft scams, he sounds like he's competent and he's on our side.
    -
    I was blindsided by this.

  • Brian

Finally Gregoire steps up. Lets see how long this lasts. Nice to see she has some fight in her.

  • puzzled

I just logged on to the Washington State Attorney General's office site at:

    https://fortress.wa.gov/atg/formhandler/ago/Con…

and sent him a note asking him to get rid of Social Security, too, and the rest of that socialist crap from the federal government. I knew the country was headed for hell when they started the CCC. It might be nice if you did the same.

I’m sure that the liberals will be sending him some unpleasant notes so a nice thank you would probably be well received. Personally, I have a real problem with the Food & Drug Administration. We need to assert States Rights and get the Feds out of our Drugs, too.

If you can think of anyone that you know that would do the same, please forward this link so that they can send a comment as well. But you better wise up and do it fast, or the liberals in the legislature might wise up first, and cut his lawyer budget out from under him, if they don't end that legislative session, first.

  • TranspoGuy

Rob McKenna pulls off the impossible. He makes Chris Gregoire look politically astute.

  • mathewrenndawgrenner

Rob McKenna is a hero. This health care bill is nothing more than slavery. It violates the Constitution. I am glad to see someone stand up for whats right. If I don't want Health insurance I should not be forced to. If I get in a situtation where I need medical help and cannot afford it. Oh well it is my problem and my problem alone. You should not have to pay for it. That is a principle that our country was founded on.

Governor Gregoire is one of those who think we are to stupid to take care of ourselves. She thinks we need the goverment to take care of stupid common folks

  • Ivan

The government provided the Internet so that Renner could show the world what an idiot he is. Does that violate the Constitution, you imbecile?

  • sigh

Affordable, quality health care? Where does the federal bill guarantee that? It delivers to the health insurers millions of new wallets to bleed dry. And if we don't take what's offered by health insurers, the government will bleed us dry!

We are mandated to have health insurance coverage by 2014. If we don't we get fined. So, the government will provide a reasonably priced option, won't it. Oh, no, they won't. We still have to take what is offered through the private sector, no matter what.

And the government will enforce a cap on premiums, right…Whoops, that isn't there either.

I see two good things in the bill, preventing denial for pre-existing conditions and the abolishment of lifetime maximums.

I'm currently uninsured by choice. I'd love to have health insurance, but what is offered by my employer does not cover naturopathy or alternative care as a primary health care service. I can't have a naturopath as my primary care provider. I would have to pay out of pocket for all my medical care, plus my share of the premium for myself and my wife (granted it is less through my employer than if I went for individual health insurance) for what amounts to insurance for emergency care.

So, in this, Rob McKenna represents me.

I really wish that this health care bill was as meaningful as those who toe the democratic party line are trying to convince us it is…

  • Caleb

It's a shame that it's come to this. Rob is the last stand for the protection of Washington residents. Don't believe all the sob stories dems have used to push this bill- this new law (since obama signed it) is a BLATANT compromise of our freedom as Americans and I cannot believe that congress would pass it, given that 75% of Americans DID NOT WANT IT. Time to recycle government and get some officials that actually LISTEN to the people.

  • Rich

Hey Joe! Your tirade might have greater traction if your rhetoric could elevate itself out of the gutter. Only morons and Democrats are 'language deprived'.

McKenna's duty is protect the population of WA and to protect the U. S. constitution! Simple! Forcing a U.S. citizen to
purchase anything, be it 'widget' or health care, is blatantly unconstitutional!

  • Rich

    Hey Ivan,
    'Sticks and stones”
    Liberal nonthinker!

  • d.knapp

The Gov and legislature should cut the AG's budget if he is going to waste money like this and use his office for his campaign!!!

  • braunzie

Rob does represent me. He also pays attention to constitutional issues and is willing to push that point. Note that the Gov is silent on that issue.

  • James Cavanaugh

Sorry Gov. Gregoire, Bob is right and once again you are dead wrong. You are the worst thing that has happened to this state since Mt St. Helens blew. The people do not want Obama or his health care crap. You and your cronnies need to start listening to the people and do what they want, not what you want. Sure glad you will be gone by 2012. In fact why don't you save the state and quit now!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jimbob

    Joe
Pull your head out the that dark place. Mckenna is doing his job.
Are you going to pay for my health care insurance Joe?
Well I sure don't want to pay for yours.

  • jimbob

You need to tell the Gov. about the budget, oh she doesn't know what a budget is.
Do you have a job, or are you just another one of those peoople who thinks the world owes them.
    Get real!!!

  • rockyglass

Protecting the population of Washington include protecting those who stand to loose everything from a catastrophic health crisis.
Having been widowed, then made homeless and had my only source of income, my small business, liquidated to cover my late husbands medical bills because insurance often has a lifetime cap.

I was once a republican, no longer, they will never see another donation or another vote for them from me.
As for McKenna if he decides to run for governer I will campaign tirelassly to assure he never gets elected.

  • myvwpt

Gov Gregoire does not represent the wishes of the people of Washington State and I stand by McKenna he is right this health care bill is unconstitutional and Socialist.

  • paul

    you canot be serious

  • clairedupont

Yes, those silly right wing folks…you know the ones who stand by the Constitution, love freedom, want low taxes, private property rights…those folks who have morals, values and believe in the founding fathers, those folks who believe in family, hard work, pull your own weight, don't depend upon someone else's money to be given to you..you know those folks who defend freedom….darn “right wing tools”…it's so much better to be a socialist, be lazy, live off someone else, take gov handouts, and live in squalor, smoke pot and let someone else do the work..and just sit back and let Obama ration our healthcare…yeah, that's the life we libs want.

  • Think_about_It

Rob stepped outside his job here. Look at the definition of what the Attorney General's Office does: http://www.atg.wa.gov/WhatTheOfficeDoes.aspx
The closest to this is the fifth bullet: “Represents the State of Washington before the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, and trial courts in all the cases involving the state’s interest and defends in court state officers or employees ethically acting in their official capacities.” This lawsuit is not in the state's interest and certainly has nothing to do with state officers or employees.
He should certainly publish his opinion on the matter, but the lawsuit crosses he line.

  • Huey

WOW! Deja Vu! I read the exact same thing yesterday in the Columbian newspaper! Almost word for word.

  • Huey

Gregoire asked “Whom does he represent?” and the answer would be ME!! He represents me! I was proud when I heard that he had filed the lawsuit. Finally Washington does something right! Gregoire does not speak for me.

  • e_d

Let's go ahead and get rid of all Socialist institutions in the US! Down with free primary and secondary education! Let the elderly fend for themselves or get a job like the rest of us!

    Oh wait, let's not.

  • Cjean

He represents me and I'm a Voting Washington resident.

Bravo, Bros! keep going like this, more good info again.

People is really sensible to the confidentiality of their medical data. It is critical information.

The danger with Google Health and HealthVault is that somebody in the future crack their security systems.

Also the fact about a private company getting data about your health must concern us.

  • Anonymous

There are plenty of logistical issues to work out, too. The Cleveland Clinic may have a state-of-the-art medical-record system, but odds are good that many of the physicians these patients will see elsewhere don’t — so how will these doctors actually use this information?
