Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

PubliCola Survey

PubliCola has been around for over a year, and thousands of you are reading us every day. It’s been a big year for us.

Recently, we’ve added new writers like Dan Bertolet who brought his HugeassCity to PubliCola. And there’s our latest nerds— BikeNerd and RealEstateNerd.

And check out the write up about us in the PI today.

But you know what? It’s time we learn a little about you. The more we know, the better we can make the site. And being able to tell advertisers more about our audience helps us sell ads—which means the site will keep on rolling.

Thanks in advance for your time and honesty.

Hey! Don't forget Dan and HAC when talking about new additions!

  • Josh Feit

    So right.

  • alexjonlin

No option for under 18 on the age range on the survey!

  • Donolectic

No West Seattle as a neighborhood? Really?

  • Maggie

    And no U District?

I was also surprised by this at first — considering West Seattle has about 1/5 of the city's population. But then I remembered that this is the same publication that thinks Margarita Prentice represents White Center. And one of whose writers famously referred to this side of the Duwamish as “not even in the city of Seattle”

WTF? Delridge, Alki, High Point, U District, Rainier Beach? You elitist, euro centric fucks. You just pissed me off. I guess I don't live in your pre-selected acceptable neigborhood.

Ah you guys whine too much. :) It was a quick feedback survey on the direction of the site, not the US Census.

Apologies to Josh or Erica for the gratuitously long and rambling suggestions.

This is also the second survey with “Do you work downtown?” which confuses me. How close to downtown do you need? Does Pioneer Square count? Met Park? SLU?
