Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

The Morning Blotter: More Details On Aurora Motel Incident

A police report released Thursday includes a few more details about an attempted rape at an Aurora motel earlier this week.

According to the report, at 9:15pm on February 28th, police received a report of a “rape in progress” at the Everspring Inn on 82nd and Aurora Ave N.

Police arrived and found the suspect, a 48-year-old man, in a hallway on the second floor.

“As officers attempted to arrest and place him into handcuffs, he became assaultive and struck several officers,” the report says. “[the suspect] was aggressive and belligerent, and his words were completely incoherent.”

Police eventually handcuffed the man and brought him to a patrol car. On the way, the report says the man continued to struggle and tried to spit on several officers. As medics were treating the man, police say he showed signs of a drug overdose.

Police interviewed the 30-year-old victim, who told officers she had checked in to a room at the motel with the man earlier in the evning, but that she tried to leave after he “became aggressive.”

When the woman walked out into the hallway outside of their room, the report says the man forced her to the ground, pulled her pants down, forced his hand between her legs, and punched her several times.

The motel manager heard the commotion on the second floor, ran upstairs, and pepper sprayed the man. Police arrived moments later.

After interviewing the victim, police gave her a ride home.

One thing not included in the report: any explanation or hint as to why police guild representatives were called out to the scene.

    What does this sentence mean?

I remember there was something about an accident involving a police officer. Maybe the Guild Rep was for that.

Also – we know they called to have a taser barb removed. Did that not make it into the official report? It’s interesting to see what makes it in and what doesn’t.

The person that was injured during this violence succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
He leaves four small children, the circumstances, and events leaves many unanswered questions. This is very painful for them, and for his extended family.
