Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

City Council Aide Ann Corbitt Involved in British Soccer Sex Scandal

Ann Corbitt, a legislative aide to city council member Tom Rasmussen, spoke to British tabloids today about her involvement in a British soccer sex scandal.

In July, Corbitt met married Chelsea soccer player Ashley Cole at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Seattle while his team was in town to play against the Sounders FC. In the tabloid News of the World, Corbitt described their one-night affair in extremely candid terms:

At first two other players and my friends were in the [hotel room] too, but they very quickly left. So by about 1am Ashley and I were alone, just lying on the top of the bedcovers and chatting.

Ashley was begging me to stay and, as I was having a good time, I thought I might as well. He kept telling me, ‘Just stay and sleep.’ So that was the pretence that I stayed under. I’d just sleep and leave in the morning. But almost immediately after that we started fooling around.

(It gets more salacious from there.)

The story of Cole’s affair has spread quickly across the British press, thanks as much to his fame as to his wife Cheryl Cole, who is a judge on “The X-Factor,” the UK’s equivalent of “American Idol.”

Currently, Google News shows 427 news stories about the affair.

Another likely reason the story is spreading so widely: British soccer fans are currently obsessed with footballers’ affairs in the wake of a scandal involving footballer John Terry, who lost his title as captain of the English national soccer team after news broke of his affair with a teammate’s girlfriend.

Additionally, a senior executive at the Chelsea Football Club reportedly advised Cole on how to cover up the affair when media started snooping around for details.

I contacted Corbitt by email to ask for her side of the story, whether she was quoted accurately in the News of the World piece (which includes exclusive screenshots of her text messages with Cole, a video interview with Corbitt, and numerous salacious details about her encounter with Cole), and whether she was paid for telling her story, a common practice in the British tabloid press, she said she had no comment, and suggested that I contact her press agent in London.

Just like to point out, Cheryl is not co-host on The X Factor, she's a judge. Dermot O'Leary is the host. Also John Terry lost captaincy from the England team, there is no 'British' team. Finally, Ashley is a dirty man slag, Ann is the 5th girl he has been involved with now, and Cheryl better divorce his ugly ass.

Would just like to point out Ann now sets herself up as a poor representation of the Councilmember she works for. Good lord, contact her press agent in London — let's get some integrity.

Will be interesting to see if Tom keeps her on board.

Can you explain why this is lead story in Publicola? Are you going the way of the National Enquirer or worse, the Stranger? Why is it abybody's business? In giving it this kind of coverage, are you suggesting your readers are either prudes or voyeurs or both? Shame on you, Erica—grow up. Givng up ones hormones is not prerequisite for a staff position in any modern city.

It's salacious and all and kinda fun because it's so…odd.. But calling for her resignation is crazy. She had a one night stand with a married man. That makes her unfit for a job at City Hall? I'm not sure why she talked to the press about it, but, whatever…

As a citizen I'm much more curious about who Mayor McGinn is bringing in and out of Seattle City Hall.

At least she has a press agent to field the calls. City council shouldn't have to deal with British soccer fans. 427 news stories through Google News. Seattle Weekly went into more detail. It will take some effort, but just ignore the non-story. She will be asked to resign, I predict. Nice and fun to have such a brazen employee on the payroll: City benchmarks 2010. Was this on a school night?!

What a shame that Ann is getting the bum rap here….She DIDN'T know…just a young pretty gal out on the town, having fun. It was ONE night….she didn't go back for another night after she found out who he really was…Shame on him for being such a lier!!!

Just because the press want to vilify her doesn't mean she should loose her career. Smart girl for getting a press agent…making sure that her side of the story doesn't get completely construed into something entirely opposite of what happened.

Let's give this girl some support for being honest and genuine!

I can't be my usual snide self about this story because I am very conflicted about it. I know Ann and I like her. She's smart, savvy, and has been an asset to Tom at City Hall. I always thought she had great potential in public service.
    -
But she has shown such atrocious judgment here that I think it's time to cut her loose, wish her the best of luck in her new career as an international playgirl on Rupert Murdoch's payroll, and move on.

There was no way Publicola wasn't going to run with this. It's what those two live for. I don't blame them a bit. Ann (best of luck to her) did this to herself.

What exactly has she done that makes her unfit to work for the city? If having a one night stand means you can't work for the city then the corridors of city hall are going to be pretty empty.

Not sure why this story bring embarrassment on her or on Rasmussen. He was the one breaking his marriage vows, she was just doing the exact same thing that just about everybody has done.

As a City worker myself, I can tell you that if one night stands made you unsuitable for employment, we'd have to fire the entire electrical lineman apprentice class every year upon graduation.

I personally would be so unsuitable – on an on-going basis – that I'd probably have to move out of town.

Why don't we just bring back the McCarthy ear loyalty oaths and be done with it?

It's different if you're just a regular line employee. But when you work for an elected official there is a rule: you as a staffer NEVER get in the news without your boss's say-so. (And she seems to have sought out the publicity; whether or not Rasmussen knew about it and was OK with it is unclear.) If she does good work and Rasmussen trusts her, then that's fine; he should keep her on board. But if he's worried at all about her decision-making abilities and her intentions, he should let her go (or she should quit gracefully).

Is it timely, local, and of public interest?
    Local? Yes
Timely? Yes, in that it is new to you, and is current.
Public interest? Not any more or less than half of the stories here. There are plenty of stories about people that work for other people here.

It is news not outside of the context of other stories here. I do think asking if this should “lead” on a web site is a good one. If this were a newspaper that retained a printed sequence of what news was important in the editir's view that given day. But that is not the form this is in, it is, more or less, a Burke Parlor.

I do not really care too much for the story. it is amusing, and has a local element. They did not develop the story, nor did they dig into her life to tell it. The “poor girl” freely told it.

Well, it's about goddam time somebody in this town got a classically absurd mention in the English tabloids. It's extremely glamorous to think of Britons with an appetite for minor-celeb-sex news (read: all of them secretly) clicking that embedded video to delightedly hear she has exactly the kind of dim-Yank speaking voice and syntax that makes for comedy gold across the pond. Plus they get to enjoy how carefully she did her tresses and cleavage for the clip.

Again, glamor times ten. She needs a drag tribute right away.

Really Publicola? This is newsworthy because? I am disgusted at the salacious nature of this attack, and I think this is totally below you all. First, if you guys are going to become the morality police, you will loose all credibility among your readers who appreciated your previous to this incident dedication to raising awareness about issues directly affecting our local, county and state government.

The Bushnell story was important because his ethical lapses had direct bearing on his position at the city. It seems Ann's only lapse in judgement was her having unprotected sex. Stupid? Yes, and she deserves a stern lecture from her friends about having unprotected sex with an apparent man-whore. Newsworthy? Not really, unless you are implying she is trading sex for favors to do her boss' bidding. If this is what you are implying, shame on you. If this was just a slow news day and you were looking for filler, next time try reporting on something less hurtful and just as entertaining, like who in politics has had plastic surgery or wears hair pieces.

Ann chose to give an extensive interview to the British press about this, complete with screen shots of her private text messages.

PubliCola linked it. I'm not sure how this makes PubliCola the Taliban (as one commenter noted) or constitutes an “attack,” as another commenter described it.

I also think it's funny and ironic that while many commenters are voicing concern here in this thread that PubliCola is getting all New York Post, there are three fat post right below this one about Saturday's legislative town hall meetings. …and those substantive posts have far fewer comments combined than this one.

It's more than about time Seattle and our City Council have some fun in public. Chelsea plays a Soccer match in Seattle (!), against our own MLS team – this alone is awesome. Add to that the players at a cool Capitol Hill club partying with Council staff. Right on. And then a tabloid scandal on top of it. Bring it! I hope this is the start of Seattle not being so frickn' repressed.

And you folks calling for Ann to resign? Grow the hell up already. I haven't heard anything so ridiculous since I accidentally read part of one of Pete von Reichbauer's speeches.

Why all the righteous indignation about what constitutes news? Publicola can print whatever the hell they want. It's the readers' right to ignore it or quit reading the publication altogether. But to whine that this isn't a story — why waste your time if you believe it's not worth your time?

Now, the reasons this is a story:

    1) A close aide to a Seattle City Councilmember shows tremendously bad judgment, right up there with the McGinn aide who lied about his resume. No, it wasn't that Ann screwed a married star and got her name in the papers. Maybe it's true she didn't know he was married and even then, there are plenty of homewreckers among us. No, the sin was in then blabbing about it to the tabloids, probably for money, and going well beyond with this BS about 3-4 hours of attentive mutual pleasuring. WTF? And hiring a press agent and directing further questions to him? WTF? How is this girl any different than the tramps who came out of the woodwork in Tigerpalooza to spill the wad about Tiger giving it to them in SUVs and without condoms and everything else we really don't need to know about Mr Just Do It and Do It Some More? All Ann's done is bring embarrassment on herself and her employer, who happens to be a public figure and a public servant. Ann serves at his pleasure, excuse the pun, and if I were him I'd can her ass for such a poor display of tact.

    2) How can you trust such a person to keep policy and politics in strict confidence after this? How can you trust such a person to deal fairly with the public if they're going to hold on to text messages, hide things, reveal things, do it for money and show little or no class whatsoever? I'm sure Ann's a nice enough young woman and plenty smart but in this episode she has been supremely stupid, at least if her aim was to stay in politics, and judging by the interviews it's not so clear she gives a rat's ass about staying in local politics or what any of us may think of her.

I am British, and I am glad to know Seattle offers great hospitality to lonely british men on business trips. You guys should leave the girl alone. She is solidifying the bond between USA and UK .

Ann should work for the American Embassy, and help build more internationally and state relationships.

Boo Radley – I have a hard time imagining important City Council secrets being spilled over toppled champagne glasses and rumpled bedclothes at the Four Seasons.

    wait…actually that sounds kinda sexy…

Point is, this isn't a James Bond movie and what she did has nothing to do with her work life. I very much doubt that Tom Rasmussen is even considering giving her a stern talking to much less firing her.

The Brits LOVE this kind of thing. I find it mildly amusing (admittedly I would not be amused if it were me or mine who were caught up in the mess).

So, I'm done. A mild chuckle on a Sunday morning and I'm movin on. Nothing to see here folks, move along…

Let's review: A pretty young thing ran into a handsome traveling athlete, had some drinks, went back to his hotel and had a romp between the sheets. It's not the first time this scenario every played out and it won't be the last. It'll all blow over and nobody's going to lose their job. I'll be what's-his-name's celebrity wife even takes him back. Whatever.

She got paid for spreading her legs. Basically she is a prostitute…

There's no causal link between sexual indiscretion and potentially blabbing about a closed-door briefing between a Councilmember and the SDOT Director because, obviously, no one cares about or would pay for the latter. Ann's done a great job for Tom and there's no reason to think she won't continue to do so. PS: if she weren't female and beautiful, would you feel the same way?

Agree. She goes to great length to describe how pathetic and needy he was personality-wise and how she found him physically unattractive… It just makes her seem equally pathetic and needy that she slept with him in spite of finding him repulsive.

I also found it somewhat hard to believe that she didn't know this guy was married since they were introduced by a “mutual friend.”

I'm definitely not passing judgment for the one night stand (throwing stones and all) but I do pass judgment for her having one night stand, running to the pre$$, and then claiming to not even have found the guy attractive.

Whether she loses her job depends on how her boss feels about her integrity and work performance — personally, I question her judgment and ability to use the media to improve the public's perception of an issue/stance — but he obviously knows her and I don't.

Having said all that I plan to spend some quality time down at the Four Seasons during the upcoming soccer season.

  • Seattle=TMZ! HA!

Shit, this is funny and the gal is smart. $300-400K for a story about
a hook up in a 5 star hotel? Obviously, she wants to leave Seattle and go
somewhere more fun. So what? She is an aide for a small town city
councilman. This gal needs to go to DC and with $300-400K, she definitely can. Meme of old school Seattle with all this high school
    angst and morality.

Another thing with all this sanctimonious bullshit about how to behave
    and gasp, not Seattle!

If you know anything about Seattle's history, this place, until very, very
recently was a gold rush/frontier town. There was a time not very long
ago that Seattle mayors, police/fire captains, councilmen, and even
governors used to come to Chinatown to gamble, screw hookers,
and get drunk like skunks. Today? Wink. Wink.

A mayor W.U. used to hold court in a certain Chinese restaurant bar
banging two girls at a time. And recently retired “R” used to go there also. Couple other bars, you can catch state reps/senators, their staff,
city staff, etc doing karaoke and having a good time.

The point? People are people, no matter what title, job, or ideal you want
to hold them accountable. Yeah, people can break the ten commandments, so get over it. And like most people, they could not
give a flying fuck what you think of them, so stop passing the judgment
    plate around, Mrs. Cleaver.

This gal? Think about it. She is young, pretty, smart, and $400K
richer. She doesn't need to go to work for at least 5 years or so.
She can go back to school. She can travel. Nobody will remember
    this in 6 months.

Erica, there is no downside for Ann. So what she loses her job? She
has one foot out the door already and out of this small town.
I hope she writes a book, sells the film rights, and retire marrying
some rich hedge fund manager. You go, girl!

Hope this women doesnt get screwed over by all of this, she seems like she didnt know anything about him or his wife. Its odd because football fans in England pay hundreds of hard earned pounds, travel up an down the country and some all over europe to follow their team and yet most hate everything these pre madona over payed arrogant kids who wear, and sometimes disgrace the shirt and club stand for. Hmmmm,

I think the issue is that it appears she sold the story. Also, the fact that she met him one night and slept with him the next and didn't check up on him is a little hard to believe.

Those that are saying that this looks like a way out of here for her seems like a good bet to be right.

I'd also say it's a problem when a city legislative assistant refers the local press to a London based press agent.

Ann is well known around City Hall for sleeping with most of the (coupled and uncoupled) City-related young men, and telling all about it. A well-known source to Publicola for City gossip. Girl is a drama queen and has a reputation!!

I suppose I'm confused. Nowhere have I seen that she was actually paid, it was just implied that she may have been because that is common practice. Additionally, she had attempted to keep it mum, but when the press in Britain did what they do, she did what she could to ensure that the whole truth was told, as much as can be. Or would all of you prefer that this story have been allowed to fester in the British tabloids for awhile, before reaching Seattle news outlets blown out of proportion?

Corbitt did the right thing. As for whether she should be sacked by Rassmussen – what has she done to show she is unfit to be an LA? She had sex? She clarified her side of the story to British tabloids? I guess I don't see how that makes a qualified individual no longer qualified. This isn't Bushnell. This is someone who was honest about her…hotel time…and remains qualified to do what she does.

Aren't there more important things to focus on?

Oh, and for the whole “this isn't news, Publicola” thing – wtf? Can't we have a little bit of fun, a little sexiness, in local politics? Bravo ECB.

Giffy – you've got it right. What Ann does on her own personal time is her own business and shouldn't affect her job or her boss's. Good Lord. Can't we make news out of things that are actually newsworthy? And let people live their lives? Who cares if the guy was married. There was no crime committed here.

    I agree with @ProphetofTruth.

Who cares if she slept with a soccer star. The real news here is that she was paid a great sum of money to tell her story. At what cost to her reputation? Goodbye political world.

@AliceRoosevelt – if you can get the ink Ann is, drink will be named after you, just like…. http://tinyurl.com/yzrdagx

And all you prudes, sex scandals don't end political careers. I hope Ann stays, she's good at her job. What else matters?

Can't say that I do. Do you know that she's the one paying for said agent? I mean, she readily admits that the guy's folks were talking with her about how to best shut this up, perhaps he's paying for a press agent.

You're jumping to conclusions, and all but calling this person, a dedicated public servant, a prostitute. And you're doing it behind a false pseudonym. Fuck you, “get real”. Try a bit of that yourself.

When I wrote in to publicola about them not having a Sounders nerd any more to write stories about the new schedule being released or the MLS and players union in collective bargaining I didn't expect this to be the next footy story.

Go Ann! I like your spunk. I would've done the same thing. Life is about having fun. No way should this be publicity, and no way should it have negative impact on your job. This about Josh and Erica being their usual slimy selves, trying to get attention on themselves. You stick it out and stay in your job, and do the excellent work you've always done.

You know, Meinert, you're not nearly as smart or as hip as you think you are. And you simply refuse to get it. It's not the boinking. I don't care who anybody boinks or does not boink. It's the blabbing that matters.

All she had to say to any tabloid inquiry was “none of your business.” That would have been the end of it.

Once she blabs — in detail yet, much of it gratuitous — her effectiveness is compromised. Because who knows what she might blab next, or to whom.

I know she's good at her job. If Tom thinks this is not a problem, that will be good enough for me. That doesn't make me a prude. I'm concerned about the effectiveness of a City Councilman who I like and support, and about the effectiveness of his office.

I'll draw ther threshold for that where I damn please. You're not my arbiter of social standards. Go sell your booze and quit making assumptions about people. You're getting damn tiresome.

Next time I see you, I'm going to give you a hug. Not really. But I'll think about it.

The most important point, though, is just what you said: if Tom thinks it's not a problem, then she's good to go. Realistically, this will not be enough (IMO) to really hurt Rassmussen, or his ability to run Transportation and continue to be a good Council member. This incident in no way can be compared with any other recent staffing issues in other offices.

And you still think I'm as hip as I think I am, right? :-)

  • Come on, Seattle!

    Lots of issues here.

    1. If Ann wants to spend the night with this soccer player, that's her business.

    2. Did Ann get paid for her story? Uh, what do you think? She has a press agent in London. They are not free like a public defender. She gave a video interview to the tabloid. If they routinely pay for such interviews, then the only reasonable assumption (if not definitive proof) is that Ann was paid to tell all.

    3. Should she keep her job? Like most of us, she is an at-will employee, so that is Councilmember Rasmussen's decision.

    4. Was Publicola wrong to let us know about this story? If Ann did not grant the tabloid interview (for which she was almost certainly paid), then it would not be news. Given the fact that a Seattle government employee's affair is smeared all over a tabloid with her own words, Publicola would do Seattle a disservice ignoring the story.

    5. Last, and most important, should Dave Meinert have named this drink after Ann? I'll withhold judgment until I sample the drink myself.

How can Corbitt focus on her City job when she moonlights across the Atlantic? Besides, she's not the only qualified Council aide.

Given the kind of money the tabloids are known to pay for these kind of stories, I don't blame Ann for cashing in when a healthy sum was offered.

If she was betraying the trust of her employer or a longtime friend I might view it differently, but this is just some English football player she had a romp with.

Actually Seattle has a tradition of the local elected officials and police chiefs doing a bit more than just partaking in gambling and prostitution. At the very least they would turn a blind eye to the activity for the right bribe. In some cases they were investors in the gambling dens and brothels.

In fact one of the largest brothels ever built in the early 1900's was a business enterprise financed by the then mayor, police chief, and other local businessmen.
