Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Armored Car Robber Shot In Rainier Beach

Police are investigating a shooting at Rainier and 52nd. Sounds like one person was injured. More info on the way.

UPDATE: Victim is on the way to Harborview. The shot went through the victim’s arm and grazed his chest. Medics have called for a blood run, which means the patient’s probably lost a lot of blood.

Update 2: Medics may actually be transporting the suspect. There was also mention of an armored car earlier, but haven’t heard anything else that indicates whether this was a robbery or not. There have been a couple of armored car robberies in south Seattle over the last month or two, including one a few blocks away from the scene of this morning’s shooting.

Update 3: Our pal @Despeaux is on scene and just Tweeted that this was indeed a robbery. Armored car guard shot the robber four times. In the two other armored car robberies we’ve reported on recently, no shots were fired.

We’ve heard the ambulance left the scene without its siren on, and medics were having trouble getting a pulse on the robber earlier. Not good signs.

I guess the robber had a weapon or at least stated he did.

I remember in the nearby Auto-Zone armored car robbery of January 2nd (which you linked to): “The guard did not chase after the man and did not fire his weapon because, as he later told police, he did not feel physically threatened.”

It sounds like today’s robbery was somehow different in an important way.

I overheard that during the fire response to today’s shooting, the blood run was cancelled.

Does anyone know what happended at the Rainier Beach McDonalds today? When I driving by, I noticed several police cars and the entire parking lost was taped off.

  • kaboom

    yeah!

    That was this.

I happened to be one of the individuals pulling into McDonalds when the shooting happened. The young man who was shot did not seem to be armed from my angle (but that doesn’t rule out a weapon, I was on rainier pulling into the parking lot as the guy fell. That means i saw the mans back.) The armed security guard seemed to be doing his job. If it was a robbery then the man had it coming. The guard seemed to be in right mind (or as close to any person who could be who just had to discharged his firearm).
Maybe the sting of robberies will slow down now?

Heck, arm those security guards with micro-Uzis. They’re doing a better job than our local police at deterring crime. Better aim, at the right place at the right time, actually stopped a criminal — give this lady a medal!!!
