Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

McGinn’s Inauguration Price Tag: $10K

Mayor Mike McGinn’s unusual inaugural festivities—which featured jugglers, dancers, musicians, and performers walking on stilts—cost the city around $10,000, a records request reveals.

Not counting overtime paid to two city employees, six employees who took “flex time” (taking off another day to make up for working during McGinn’s Saturday inauguration) and three employees whose pay information and hours worked during the inauguration were not immediately available, the total price tag to the city for the January 9 event was 9,825.07.

Most of that money paid for city staff time during the event, held on a day when City Hall would ordinarily be closed. City employees staffing the event included arts program employees, janitors, events coordinators, planning and development specialists, license inspectors, and several fire and police department officers.

Also on the city’s inauguration tab:

• $446.11 for electricity (the cost of keeping the lights and heat on at City Hall on a Saturday, when they’d ordinarily be off);

• $2,400 for entertainment, including $300 for Recess Monkey, a kids’ band; $300 for Northwest Tap Connection, a rhythm tap dance troupe; and $500 for Circus Contraption, a local burlesque/performance art/ circus company;

• and $176 for private security (in addition to $2,814.35 for four Seattle Police Department officers).

That $10,000 figure (a fragment, it should be noted, of the city’s $900 million-plus general fund) doesn’t include any of McGinn’s nighttime inauguration festivities (including a free show at the Showbox in SoDo), because those were paid for out of his campaign funds, not by the city.

    a fraction of what it would have cost to pay health benefits for past employees. but jugglers are so important to the image of the new Administration!

    And it should be made clear that the only reason the staffing costs weren’t higher is the majority of city staff working the event were strategic advisors, managers and executives (people not eligible for OT)…yup, the fat at the top that McGinn wants to cut to save money.

    BFD. He just became the Mayor. Maybe when you become Mayor you’ll want to celebrate a little bit. How much did the Obama inauguration cost? Or Bush’s? Who cares. It’s not like there was a fountain of gold and strippers and a mountain of cocaine.

    this is just to easy to kick them on. the real problem is that we have never seen a start in any office at any level that is so badly done politically and policy. and paying hundreds of dollars for a juggler is just a minor smile at their stupidity.

    My guess is it is on par and is therefore not a newsworthy story, but that’s just a guess.

    The city faces a crippling budget gap? You know what a real leader would have done and should have done? Simply not have the celebration. No, it’s not a great deal but had he not had the usual celebrations it sends a message that he is serious about saving money. Though again he wants a special election in May that’s going to cost the city a lot to put on so….

    When I first heard of the plans for this party I wrote it off to more McGinn and Co. ridiculousness, but it sounds like a lot of people had a good time for that $10K. This doesn’t bother me nearly as much as a lot of the other things that went on this month…

    Yeah, how about a bit of context? I have no idea if this is exorbitant or frugal or right in line with other admins?
    Also, since you note that this is just a tiny fraction of the overall budget, this is pretty much muckracking any way you slice it.
    After all, with such a completely abysmal start to this admin, you’d think there are other ways for you to rake him across the coals.

    What a totally stupid story to post. Big fail.

    Not to say McGinn gets any props, but this story is silly. Definitely not worth the time I spent reading it

    publicola should be spending more time on how McGinn is quickly losing the trust of the council, and how staff is leaving because of the clusterfuck happening around him taking office. Yes it’s only been barely a month, but get it together.

    $10K for a party? That’s nothing – he and his “unemployed kidz” chewed through their 2-month $100K Transition budget in 30 days.

    A chicken in every pot, and an iPhone for every staff member. Nothing is too good for this Emperor. But the rest of the City peons – off with their heads!

    At least a thousand people got better informed about City government through the event and countless children got involved and saw change happen. That is hundreds more than came to the City Council swearing in ceremony — and most Council and committee meetings are attended by just a handful of members from the public.

    I went to the inauguration and very much appreciated it. There were tons of people there. Kids and adults both learning to actually participate (read: not just bitch on Publicola) in civic process. I met council members, the mayor, the deputy mayors, etc. Whereas before I thought that Tim Burgess was just a heartless ass who hated homeless people, I was able to learn that he’s a person who just needs some education. I formed a new opinion of the DPD and met people doing good work through other city departments.

    You think that people just vote yes on every levy without knowing that some good can come from it? That knowledge comes by seeing it.

    I’ve never been so proud of Seattle as during that inauguration.
