Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

The Best In Free

Well, this list saves me a lot of trouble. Gamasutra, a gaming site tailored for developers and nit-pickers, posted a grab-bag list of its 99 favorite free games of 2009 last week. Ninety-nine! It’s not a perfect list—particularly a few “arty” duds. But most of the games are smart and accessible—not to mention playable through any web browser—so bookmark the link for the best in free, indie games while you kill time in ’10.

My ’09 freebie favorites below.

spelunky

Spelunky: An 8-bit hunt through caverns. This has shades of the old Lode Runner arcade/NES game of the ’80s, only Spelunky randomly generates its levels and has a boatload of surprises. Basement game-makers are gaga over this game as much for its fun as for its ingenuity.

Canabalt: Another sleeper smash of the year, and it has only one button: jump. But there’s something about being dropped into this simple game’s weird, action-movie world that proves captivating. The music, the unexplained panic, the monotone art style … You’ll play this for 1.5 minutes and remember it for far longer. Now available for iPhone, as well.

Closure: A member of this year’s Penny Arcade Expo game competition, this little side-scroller has an amazing gimmick that is better discovered than spoiled. Try it.

RunMan: If you enjoyed the original Sonic The Hedgehog games, then try this deceptively tricky, “run really fast” game. Also, if you love listening to public domain soul and blues songs, you’re in luck.

Guardian Rock: Imagine controlling a Tetris block that kills prying, insensitive anthropologists. Good puzzles here.

  • Joh Alwood

My favorite free game of the year was “Guess which polyp is cancerous”.

I do not suggest the PSP version though. People on the bus will look at you weird.

Spelunky is so much fun. I wasted a lot of hours on that game when it was first released
