Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Former NFL Player to Take on Sen. Patty Murray

The PI.com has the scoop: 1980s Washington Redskin’s tight end Clint Didier (currently a hay farm operator and owner of Didier Excavation in Pasco, Washington) will take on U.S. Sen Patty Murray.

Didier is a regular GOP contributor. He’s donated over $1,000 to central Washington state U.S. Rep. Doc Hasting’s (R-4) since 1996, he gave $1,000 to the Republican Party of Washington late last year, he gave $480 to the Benton County Republicans last year, $200 to Dino Rossi in ’08, and $250 to the Property Fairness Coalition in ’06.

And the fun begins! We’ve got a an ex-jock/hay farmer/dirt digger in the running for the GOP. Can we get a former newsreader in as well? Perhaps, since she’s NOT a republican, she can run as an independent.

This should give people a little pause. Its easy to laugh at a guy like that. But remember, in DC Clint Didier is well remembered. And believe it or not, DC is where Senate candidates are funded. Both parties recruit former athletes. If Donaldson didn’t run for Mayor — he would be getting sworn in today on the Council.

Patty will have a well funded candidate to run against, who has nothing to lose. And it will be the worse time to be a Democratic incumbent, its going to be a bad bad year for Democrats. In fact, an outsider will have a better shot at winning than a traditional GOP pol.

Even Didier is going to have a hard time matching Sen. Murray on the money front in the short time remaining before the August primary.

Furthermore ex-jock or not he doesn’t have nearly the name recognition that Murray does statewide.

In addition Sen. Murray is VERY good at retail politics, she has strong support all over the state and is unlikely to lose even if 2010 turns out to be a wave election year.

  • Eric Koszyk

    @ West Seattle Waiter:

Let’s see, this guy has zero name recognition in Washington State, has zero experience in politics whatsoever besides cutting checks and being a “Tea Bag Activist”, no experience as an elected official and is to the far right of moderate Republicans (the only Republicans who have a chance at winning state wide here). He also doesn’t have that much money (he’s no Mike McGavick).

By the way, according to the latest finance records in September, Senator Murray has over $4.6 million cash on hand with no debt. 65% of the money she has raised has come from individuals (not PACs) and 62% has come from within the State of Washington. DC is NOT where most Senate candidates get their funding. Incumbents also generally get more money from out of state then do challengers.

There are many Senate races this year that will be nail biters. There are already 6 open seats that are currently held by Republicans. Of those six, 5 are in states where Democrats have a good shot of taking them (FL, MO, NH, KY, OH). Right now the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has over $4 million more than their Republican counterparts. That committee will first spend its resources defending Republican seats that are in jeopardy. If there’s any left over it will next spend on Senate seats where the Democrats are in serious trouble, of which there are several this year. WA State is far down the list.

In short, Mr. Didier can not count on any money coming from the national GOP and his race will also not get much attention from big donors outside the state.

He will have to completely self finance his campaign. When he does that he will lose all credibility as being a reformer and a “man of the people”. (Does anyone know how much he’s actually worth?)

Didier is announcing his campaign in Everett, Spokane and Pasco. Granted King County is hostile territory for Republicans but if he is scared of showing the flag in King County on his opening day he’s going nowhere. Republicans can’t win King County but they can’t win statewide without putting up a strong fight and doing well in King County.

I don’t think Didier has a chance though I find it interesting that it seems so many NFLers are republicans. Didn’t a couple of the Seahawks give Bush a jersey a couple years ago?

jfred, yes, Matt Hasselbeck & Mack Strong gave Bush a Seahawks team jersey. Afterward, the Seahawks issued a statement saying they had nothing to do with the presentation, and Hasselbeck expressed surprise about the negative reaction from the fans (and there was plenty).

It is hard to imagine why the people of Washington state would want to re-elect someone as weak and pathetic as Murray who marches lockstep (goose step) with Obama and his America haters. Can’t you people find a quality, strong, pro America person to represent you in Washington D.C., not just the opposite in Murray and Canttell. Scoop Jackson and Warren Magnusen are probably rotating in their graves at the crowd now in Washington D.C.

I have seen Didier speak at a local high school. It was not political, more a motivational “hard work will get you where you want to be” type speech. He was very eloquent, not at all a “dumb jock”.
I am leery of “experienced” politicians who work to keep their governement job, and am ready for someone who wants to go to Washington, vote against an expanding government (unlike Bush), and then goes home. Career Senators/politicians spend so much time in DC, they begin to think they know better about running my life than I do. No thank you! Didier or not, Patty needs to go!

@15 His Senatorial Exploratory Committee site on Facebook has been up since September. He’s just now making it official.

@12, 13: Please give your rhetoric a rest. You both sound stupid. “America haters”? You both sound like you are from the “tea bag” wing of the GOP, as is Mr. Didier. You are the reason why he will lose big if he is the nominee. Let me thank you in advance.

Obama loves America and probably has sacrificed more for it than the two of you combined. After graduating from law school he turned down lucrative jobs to return to Chicago and become a community organizer. Myself, I’ve always worked hard for the community and I also served 7 1/2 years in the National Guard.

So give it a rest, mmmkay?

Progressives love America. Conservatives love America. We just have different ideas on what is best for America.

    Eric,
If progressives loved America they would not reject Madison for Marx. Plain and simple.
What has Obama sacrificed? An amazing an very expensive education? A hard life in Hawaii in an elite private school? Sacrificing a cushy law job to serve as a community organizer to secure a political carrier? Tough life.
Murray is a liberal puppet and typical corrupt politican. Didier has private business experience and obvious experience working within a group to accomplish goals.
Do you want to be governed according to the constitution or by socialist dictates? Which ever one you pick will show whether you love America or not.

when you have something meaningful to add to this discussion please let us know

By the way I agree with Madison when he warns about the abuses of the Church, the abuses of monopolies and corporations, and when he argues for the establishment of strong public education systems.

He also said this about war:

“No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.”

“Of all the enemies of public liberty, war is perhaps the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other.”

“It is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged to the provisions against danger, real or pretended, from abroad.”

    Eric,

You obviously have been drinking the Obama Koolaid and /or smoking something that affects your perception of reality. Can you give any REAL documentable examples of Obama showing how he (or Murray) loves America or the hard working, tax paying American people (not just his ACORN buddies who were also “community organizers”, and people like Reverend Wright, Holder and Van Johnson)?? Obama has only shown contempt for America and its founders by his actions inside and outside this country. You should start paying attention to what is going on around you, and realize Murray is just a rubber stamp for Obama’s anti America policies.

Why are people saying “@15″? The posts aren’t numbered anymore — are they?

For anyone who says a candidate can’t win if they don’t have ideas/can’t talk, remember Reichert? Who won twice against someone who could talk very well and had ideas? Appeal to stupidity and you win.

The Supreme Court just took care of the money issue. Conservatives will have absolutely no trouble with money from now on.

Mel, this country is so far from being socialist it’s not even funny. And are Publicola comments going to descend to the “Koolaid/ACORN” stupidity level that bedevils poor Goldy’s otherwise great blog? That’s depressing.
