Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

State Rep. Brendan Williams Will Not Seek Baird Seat

State Rep. Brendan Williams (D-22) announced today that he will not run for U.S. Rep. Brian Baird’s (D-WA) open seat. (Baird’s district covers SW Washington.)

Rep. Baird announced last week—to the Democratic Party’s surprise—that he’s not seeking reelection.

Rep. Williams, a liberal firebrand, was rumored to be considering a run. Williams, who represents Olympia, is a famously disgruntled legislator who is outspoken about his disdain for Speaker Rep. Frank Chopp (D-43), who Williams thinks is a sell out to the state building lobby.

In a statement this afternoon, Rep. Williams said:
Through developments during the health care debate, and through decisions like granting huge tax breaks to publicly-traded homebuilders while leaving mortgage-paying citizens facing default, we’ve seen big money is all that matters in Congress.  And I’m nobody’s yes-man.
I look forward to working with Senator Pridemore this next session in overcoming oil polluters, and their two State House friends among the announced candidates, and pass House Bill 1614.
The reference to state Sen. Pridemore (D-49) is noteworthy. Pridemore is running for Baird’s seat. Moreover, Williams criticizes two other people who have also declared, state Rep. Jaime Herrera (R-18) and state Rep. Deb Wallace (D-17).
Williams’ press release points out:
Both Representatives Jaime Herrera and Deb Wallace voted with the oil industry against stormwater-cleanup HB 1614 in a 51-45 House floor vote on April 25, 2009.
Herrera, 31, is a potential young star for the GOP. For what it’s worth, I just got back from taping a year-end wrap up show at the Seattle Channel with several other journalists and Herrera’s candidacy was definitely the buzz.

Hey guess what, Pridemore is running. He’s not rumored.

Maybe spend a little less time worrying about who Mike McGinn has hired to be deputy junior director of whatever-the-F, and slightly more time studying up on Washington’s biggest 2010 campaign.

Called this the day Baird announced his retirement:

Brendan Williams . . . decided a long time ago not to stay in the state house. I thought it was some combo of having young kids and not liking getting Chopped. I’m sure he’s enticed at the moment, but I think (hope?) he’ll remember why he wanted to get out of politics. Though it sure would be nice to watch BIAW get all tied up in a hissy.

@1: A-FREAKING-MEN. If you didn’t read it, go look at their 12/09 article announcing the retirement. They forgot when Baird first got elected. They also attempted to name the state legislators from the 3rd CD. They left out all 6 Dems from Olympia and the Coast (although they later tried to add the 3 Olympia Ds but got one of their names wrong). And they left out all 3 Republicans from Lewis County and listed 3 from way out in Yakima. It would be laughable were they were not the most successful political news-coverers in the state right now.
