Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

T-Shirt Alert

If you’re like me, you really struggle with holiday gifts—mixing a blend of creative with thoughtful.  Well, we here at Publicola have just the solution: Fun, political T-shirts! Luckily, I received a tip about a website that sells customized Obama T-shirts. These can be good for your liberal friends and your conservative relatives as well (lots of loopy anti-Obama shirts here.)

Zazzle.com, an online T-shirt vendor, is a Menlo Park upstart founded with early investor money from Google and is linked to Disney.  In 2007, it was ranked the 13th fastest growing company in the Silicon Valley. They operate a little like Cafe Press—aspiring entrepreneurs upload their own graphics to Zazzle’s website, where they can then modify T-shirt style, color and graphic layout. Once you finish using the T-shirt creator wizard, poof, you just created a T-shirt product that people can buy using Zazzle.com’s easy shopping cart/checkout modules.  Zazzle gets a share of all your sales, but you don’t have do anything but slap a funny T-shirt together. Create, click, sell, profit.

There appears to be no censoring of truly offensive logos on these self-made shirts, however.  Among the many “Obama = Socialism” and “Don’t Blame Me, I Voted for McCain” T-shirts, there are also your racist and violent anti-Obama shirts.

Exhibit A:Barack Obama. Clown-in-Chief

Exhibit B: “Send Obama Shooting with Cheney

Exhibit C: “Abort Obama. Not the Unborn.”

Exhibit D: Need a bumper sticker?  “Cannibals are starving in Africa. Please send Barack Obama to help.

Exhibit E: Waterboard Obama.

Exhibit F: “Obama’s Socialism at Work.” Complete with sombrero!

You get the point.

Final interesting point:  the Creative Director for Zazzle.com, Darren Luvaas, is a 2008 donor to Barack Obama.  In his online resume, he notes he “wrote the styleguide” for Zazzle.

John Doerr, initial investor in Zazzle, is a max-out contributor to Obama and many Democratic candidates, including our very own Patty Murray and Adam Smith.

That didn’t come out right. Looking at these makes me feel terrible knowing there are racists like these.

Hippies shop at Whole Foods even though their CEO wrote that WSJ editorial last summer. Now righties are buying racist tee shirts from major liberal donors. Ain’t capitalism grand?

Don’t you get it? He’s brilliant. Only conservatives are going to buy these t-shirts and then he just turns around and donates the money to democrats. Flawless

Most of Zazzle’s co-founders from 1999 are a bunch of crazy right-wing Stanford grads; Doerr didn’t come on as an investor until ’05.

  • Democrat In Texas

Did you guys have a look at the site. I found as much (or more) pro-Obama merchandise as anti-Obama. I think these guys are equal-opportunity capitalist punks. That might explain how they can be run by “Right-Wing Stanford Graduates” and still funded by a liberal.

Obama is bringing out the worst in the right wing nutjobs. Some of this stuff is pathetically funny, but my sense is that many of these people really would like to see Obama dead. Scary.
