Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Teenage Girl Harrassed, Assaulted by MS-13 Members After Trying to Leave Gang

A Ballard High School student called police last week to report that she was harassed and assaulted by gang members near her school after she tried to leave the gang.

The girl was waiting for the bus after school on December 1st, a police report says, when another girl approached her, began pulling her hair, pushed her to the ground, hit her in the face, and then fled.

Shortly after, one of the victim’s friends came up to her at the bus stop and warned her that a group of men were “running around the school with a baseball bat looking for her.” A police report says the members of the group are affiliated with MS-13, a Los Angeles-based Hispanic gang.

The girl got on a Metro bus and got off to transfer. While she was waiting for the next bus, a group of men tried to pull her into a black Honda Civic, but the girl was able to fight them off and get on another bus. That evening, the report says, the girl saw the same car slowly roll by her house in North Seattle.

The girl told officers that she recently tried to leave MS-13, but that members of the gang “were upset with her” and might be looking for revenge.

What a punch of pansies these guys are. Assaulting teenage girls because they left their stupid little gang? That’s about as wimpy as it gets.

okay, you know things have gotten bad when a Salvadorian from LA is causing problem in BALLARD, WASHINGTON. police should stake out this girls house, follow her as closely as possible and CATCH THESE WASTES OF CARBON and PUT THEM AND ALL THEIR CRONIES IN JAIL. or, deport the ones who should be deported. and, i know this isn’t kosher to say in a Seattle forum, but my guess is MOST of them are here illegally and SHOULD be deported ANYWAY! this is what happens when the Seattle PD doesn’t take a strict enough stance on gangs and gang related crimes… including TAGGING.

Find these punks and make examples of them. SEND THE WARNING CALL OUT so more of these scum don’t come here! ZERO TOLERANCE FOR THIS CRAP! what kind of FALSE-MACHO a-holes accost a TEENAGE GIRL??!!?? what the hell does that PROVE?!

If I am not mistaken, Canada will NOT let a foreign citizen immigrate there if they have a criminal offense record. They also require that you prove your ability to support yourself without depriving Canadian citizens of Canadian jobs. Why can’t we have the same policies in the US? Think of how much better the quality of life would be for those of us that are all good and legal, law abiding US citizens.

Are you telling me a gang can roam the hallways of Ballard High School with a baseball bat and no one notices them and calls police? Where is the bleeping security in a public school?! That should be investigated by the school district at least. Gangs must absolutely be kept out of public schools at all costs!

  • Crabby

Gangs have been in Ballard for a VERY long time! Aren’t there safety officers in high schools? squeakywheel, gangs should be kept out – period, end of story. It will take more than police. EVERYONE has a part to play!

In 1998 the WBs and other ingrates started hanging out at golden gardens firing guns and fighting. The COPS where too scared to go into the park without back-up. Since Ballard and GG park are so far away for the North precinct by the time back would arrive it was too late to catch anyone. The incidents where mostly accuring in the dark of night until june of 1998 when gun play open drinking and drug use spilled into the light of day. The SPD still refused to take action because according to the SPD they were afraid of the ACLU accusing the SPD of racial profiling.

It’s almost 2010 so take a trip to GG parks and close your eyes open your ears and try to guess what country your in!

It’s ashame what we will allow others to do to our home.

Cool racism you got brewing there, BalLard1921. Uhm, yeah.
You forgot to say “Get off my lawn, ya damn kids”

Maybe the skin color doesn’t cause the crime. Sometimes crime is just crime caused by the same things that drive white or black or Asian folks to crime. (Or drive curmudgeons to post prejudice BS online).

Besides, do you really think SPD backup only comes from precincts? That there aren’t 17 different beat sectors in seattle, and backup simply comes from ‘nearby available units’?
What, you think all the beat cops wait, lined up in the stable inside until someone calls? lol
Boy sector (B is for Ballard) in the North has a) at least 3 beats, and b) more than one cop, grumpy smurf.
