It is very encouraging that McGinn has Darrly Smith–very smart and respected member of the black community. McCoy is very smart woman with credible resume. I don’t know much about Phil, but i heard is a good and progressive dude. So far i am encouraged by McGinn’s selection.

Actually, I think these are potentially some pretty solid picks.

If you notice, Phil Fuji is the actual deputy mayor of operations. That would be the person who actually runs a lot of the logistics behind the scenes. So the question is what Phil Fuji knows about managing. While his role at Vulcan has been focused on, he also spent a long time at Department of Neighborhoods. Not knowing too much about his time there (though I’ve heard very good things – one person who worked with him then described him as “very effective”), I’m hoping this indicates an ability to manage both in the private and public sector.

I’m assuming Darryl will be very much the public face of the administration and manage exterior relations. He is perfect for this. He has an incredible facility with public speaking, is affable, and knows how to manage community relationships.

And from what I hear, Julie McCoy is a very effective manager and strategist.

I worked with Phil Fuji briefly when we both worked at the City, and I found him to be competent, and overall enjoyed working with him. I also know Darryl Smith pretty well, and if his role is to liaison with the community, that would seem to be a role for which he’s well suited. Just my two cents.

I’ve rarely heard black people say that Darryl Smith has advocated for them. In fact, I’ve heard just the opposite. When mentioning his name in the black community, people roll their eyes and shake their heads.

What he does represent is gentrification, and that disappoints me greatly.

@14 Pds. That is not true. Darrly Smith has a good reputation working with African American and African immigrant communities. He also has good relation with the Asian community. I have no idea what kind of black people you are refering to. Get you facts before you write

@16 Africa – I happen to live in the Valley area (since 93), have worked for at least a half dozen non-profits in the area, been a board member of a local non-profit there, been a member of the Rainier Chamber, attend a black church, and am Asian myself.
