Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Two Men Charged After Fremont SWAT Operation Turns Up A Stolen Arsenal

King County prosecutors have filed weapons charges against two men arrested November 19

th during a SWAT team raid near Fremont, in which police recovered at least one stolen vehicle and an arsenal of stolen guns.

Police records say officers staked out a garage in the 4500 block of Leary Way for six hours on Thursday night before a SWAT team surrounded the building and arrested Nikita Morozov, 28, and Sean Campbell, 39, who prosecutors say were in possession of a number of firearms stolen from vehicles in Snohomish County and Seattle earlier this year, as well as a 2007 Toyota stolen from a business in Magnolia last month. During the surveillance, police records say, “Morozov…was seen driving [the stolen] silver 2007 Toyota.”

Police records say Morozov surrendered to police shortly after SWAT surrounded the building, but officers ended up in a standoff for several hours with Campbell, who refused to come out of the garage. Records say Campbell, a “violent wanted felon”, ended up climbing on the roof of a neighboring business in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to flee from police. He was arrested and booked into the King County Jail for possession of stolen property.

When SWAT, detectives, and members of the Major Crimes Taskforce searched the garage, records say police found found several shotguns, rifles, and handguns, along with ammunition, silencers, and pipe bombs.”There was evidence that the occupants were using the structure as a shooting gallery,” police documents say, noting that loaded firearms were kept in a sleeping area in the building. “The most logical area to sleep had a shotgun in plain-sight,” records say.

All told, police records say officers recovered a Smith Wesson handgun,.22 caliber bolt action rife, Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun, SKS 7.62 caliber semi auto rifle with an attached bayonet, Winchester 12GA pump action shotgun, Mossberg 500C 20GA pump action shot gun, Ithaca 100 20GA double barrel shotgun, Berkshire 20GA double barrel shot gun, Savage Arms .22 caliber single shot rifle, a six shot revolver and a Glock 21 45 caliber semi auto handgun.”

Both Morozov and Campbell are convicted felons, court records say, and are unable to legally possess firearms. Court documents say Morozov has a prior conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm, while Campbell “has ten prior felonies including: theft, burglary, residential burglary, escape, possession of stolen propert, taking motor vehicle without permission and possession of firearm.”

Prosecutors say additional charges for possession of a stolen vehicle could come later this week.

What does it take to put scumbags like this away for life?

  • Tanker Driver

Wow, I was wonding what the heck was going on over there! I was in the tanker truck across the street delivering heating oil to Olson Energy. Saw the police let some guy go out of the building carrying a dart board which I thought was weird. They also towed two identical white pickup trucks from the building. I’ve delivered heating oil at Olson for the last 3 years and have seen people come and go through all times of the night across the street which I’ve always thought was pretty strange. Was there again last night and noticed the building is completely boarded up with plywood.

Yes they are guilty and should be locked up for many years. I would feel afraid if they were in the neighborhood.
