Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Awkward in Seattle

The LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake are facing off in the MLS Final at Qwest field in a few hours, at 5pm. It’s a little odd. This would be the “SuperBowl of Soccer” if the Sounders were playing.  The Sounders broke all MLS attendance records with their unprecedented fan base this year. But alas.

Even more awkward: The Sounders have winning records against both of teams—teams we’re graciously handing over our home to for the weekend. To paraphrase Sounders coach Sigi Schmid during the semis: “(It) tears up my heart because I know we were able to beat all those teams and we’re as good as those teams.”

Maybe at least it’ll get MLS to reconsider pre-selecting the final site.

One more oddity: If RSL wins, they’ll be the first team “in modern times in any major sport to win a championship after finishing the regular season with a losing record.”

Ouch.

In the meantime, David Beckham is in town and media’s going nuts.  Whatever.  Landon Donovan’s here, too. As for Salt Lake, well, it’s hard to take captain Kyle Beckerman seriously with his trustafarian dreadlocks. Though defender Jamison Olave is effectively the Hutardo of Utah.  The big hero in the squad is Keeper Nick Rimando, who, in miraculously stopping three penalty’s in RSL overtime PK shootout with Chicago, won it for Salt Lake.

It makes a tough call: root for the arrogant stars, or the undeserving underdogs?

Doesn’t matter. It’ll be a blow-out. I say: LA 3, RSL 1.

    Who cares for Christsake.

When you see Erica would use ask her: Erica-when you appear on the radio with Joni Balter would you please say “this is Erica” before you speak. I’m having great difficulty distinguishing your voice and opinions from Ms Balter.

by the way- I finished reading Grant Cogswell’s piece in The Stranger today. The score settling over having the two billion dollar mass transit project he designed on his kitchen table thwarted by our local elite is really a joy to behold. Cogswell is clearly a political and artistic genius and deserving of a position here at Publicola.

I was going to say “one comment, dman, Sports R Boring!” but the comment isn’t even about sports.

I loved Cogswell’s piece -though probably more cause he’s a friend, otherwise I thought he rambled a bit. More interesting was the Times’ reaction to it, trying to interpret this “nouveau commie screed” as an affront to their “sensibilities”, forgetting they’re the right wing rag of the NW.

But I digress. Like I said, the game would’ve been huge (and relevant) had Seattle been in it. As it was, it was a giant celebration of all things Salt Lake.
    Salt Lake?!

    15 hours……only a half a comment actually about the game……..yawwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnn………

okay I’ll try. Are you guys REALLY saying that Salt Lake, home of the Mormons, is KNOWINGLY using a SPANISH word (“real”) in their team name? Or do they not even know that?
Is this white cluelessness about all things latino, or a warm embrace of things latino/hispanic/”foreign”? Following right on the heels of Gabby and Carlos etc. etc.
los mormones nos sorprienden otra vez… quelle que chose…Wow, now THAT’S interesting.
(oh wait of course it is, that’s really about politics and culture, not sports).

Hmmm, “Sports R Boring” (where’s a Russian keyboard with backwards ‘R’ when you need it?), you comment is even more rambling and pointless than mine! But, to answer your question:
Ray-Al Salt Lake formed in 2004. They really liked David Beckham, who at the time was playing for Ray-Al Madrid, so they said “let’s name it after this British team!”.
So no, they didn’t pick a Spanish word, they picked the name of a famous Brit’s team (at the time). No liberal-lefty foreign embracingness intended, it’s all about tribute to the Motherland!

I would just like to note for the record that while your commentary is frequently very good, your predictive powers are frequently very bad…

@4 and 5. Actually, they’re named Real Salt Lake because they’re formally associated with Real Madrid.

The agreement between the two teams stipulates that (1) the two teams play a friendly in Utah every other year; (2) that RSL gets to train at Real Madrid’s facilities in Spain each winter; and (3) that Real Madrid foots half the cost of a $25 million elite youth soccer academy (dorms, classrooms, practice and training facilities) located in SLC.

I liked Cogswell’s piece in that it was as irrelevant and delusional as his films, and the only people who liked it are the minority of liberals who share his delusions.
