Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Another in a long string of foolish republican hopefuls to seek office in Washington.

Susan now goes the way of Ellen Craswell, John Carlson, Mike McGavick, et. al.

I really want there to be significant opposition in this State. But, the R’s need to learn that to win, you have to actually be engaged in City and State politics prior to running for office. Where are the leading Republican voices on the core issues that go on day in and day out in this State?

Rob McKenna is the real-deal threat, however, and we need to be well prepared for his next move.

It won’t take a lot of preparation to watch him to run for Governor, since we’ve known he’ll do so for some time.

    Timothy @ 1:

a couple of months ago, you said you could support McKenna for governor. Do you think that went unnoticed?

@4 Ivan…that’s not exactly how I said it…I said this, in relation to McKenna’s brief fighting the R-71 opponents who were trying to hide the signatures from public view:

As per item #1. I just read the brief the filed, and it seems like it rocks.

If Rob McKenna wins this, I think it’s a lock that he’ll be our next Governor. And, given the current state of Democrats in Washington? I’m increasingly welcoming of this possibility. I’m not saying I’m there yet, but I’m softening. (and to be clear, I’ve actively worked to stop the advance of McKenna’s political career.

…and a couple of follow up points.

At the time I wrote that, I thought that McKenna, himself, might argue the case before the court, and come out strongly for open government. The brief read strongly, and I thought it would have been politically smart for McKenna to align himself as a champion of gay rights (he’s long been quite moderate on gay rights issues).

But, it turns out, he sent a Assistant AG to argue the case, losing the chance to gain credibility as a moderate, even gay-friendly politician. So, I don’t think he gained the additional momentum from that effort that was possible.

Interesting. Seattle Times is reporting that Tim Ceis will serve on Constantine’s transition team.

    Timothy @ 7:

If you think McKenna is in any way “gay-friendly,” or even moderate on that issue, I have a ski lodge in Kansas to sell you. He is the enemy, plain and simple.

And even if he was “moderate,” do you think he could present himself as such? Or even make a nod in that direction? The teabagger base in the GOP would eat him alive.

It’s my hope that the Club for Growth will run somebody against him. They’d be crazy to, but crazy is what they are.

    @9 Ivan…

Again, as I said, I’m well aware of Rob McKenna’s record and positions. You don’t need to sell me on this point. I’ve worked in a very specific way to halt his advancement in State politics.

But, he has done some smart things. For example, he has supported Lifelong AIDS alliance and during the Aids Awareness Action day in Olympia this year, appeared and spoke to the group of attendees. So, he’s aware of his image on this issue, and I think has done a better job than any Republican in recent Washington history to maintain an image of moderation. He’s much more savvy than Rossi, and will appeal to a broader coalition than did Rossi. Seeing how close Rossi came to defeating Gregoire, I don’t think we can take McKenna lightly.

But, I’m not sure what the point of this back-and-forth is. I don’t support McKenna. My statement above was made in frustration with our State elected leaders, who continue to treat Seattle very poorly. If they continue to do so, they may weaken their support, suppressing turn-out for them at the very time that McKenna will be surging amongst moderates across the State.

Unions 1 – citizen well being 0. Same song, different verse. Lets hope Dow can leave some of his anger and nasty behavior behind him and actually do something constructive for the county. We need budget restraint, not foot ferries. We need flood control, not more mass transit. We need some fiscal responsibility and jobs!!!

    mike @ 12:

Foot ferries move more passengers per mile per gallon of fuel by far and away than if those passengers were to drive their cars, or even car pool. Foot ferries take cars off the highways at peak hours and relieve passenger pressure on buses.

We DO need foot ferries. We need more mass transit, of every mode, AND we need flood control. Pitting one need against another like that is just plain fraudulent.

The existing foot ferry routes in Dow’s district are very popular and make a lot of sense. What we didn’t need is Phillips and Patterson loading the thing up with stupid pork ferries to their districts, and then turning around and stabbing Dow in the back when that little shit Danni Westneat threw his hissy fit along with pathological batshit crazy liar Kathi Lambert.
