Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Officer Down

(updated with additional info)

A veteran Seattle Police Department Field Training Officer was killed in the line of duty in a shooting in the Leschi neighborhood Saturday night. A female officer, who recently graduated from the academy, was also wounded in the shooting.

Police say at about 10:15 p.m., Field Training Officer Timothy Brenton—who had been with the department since December 2000—and Officer Britt Sweeney were sitting in their patrol car at 29th and Yesler after performing a traffic stop, when another vehicle—a white, silver, or light blue compact or subcompact, police say—pulled up on their left.

Officer Brit Sweeney—who, police say, graduated from the police academy six or seven months ago—was sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, going over traffic stop procedures when she noticed the car next to them. Police say Sweeney “sense[d] danger” and yelled out as at least one gunman in the other car opened fire through the passenger side window.

The scene of the shooting, one day later.

Bullets grazed Sweeney’s back, piercing her body armor. Brenton was struck in the head, killing him instantly, police say. Sweeney was able to get out of the car and return fire as the other vehicle sped away. “This is an assassination,” Assistant Chief Jim Pugel said at a press conference this afternoon. “Every resource is being used to bring this to a conclusion.”

Police have not released any information about suspects. However, following the shooting, police were notified that a man who had been let out of jail Friday night had made threats against officers. Police contacted the man again Saturday night, following the shooting, and he was booked in to the King County Jail for obstruction at around 5:30 a.m. Court records indicate the man has previously been charged with for drugs, harassment, “attempting to elude” police, and assault on an officer in 2007. Jail records indicate the man was booked into the King County Jail on October 30th for “threats.” At this afternoon’s briefing, Assistant Chief Pugel downplayed the man’s arrest, but did not eliminate the possibility of his involvement in the incident.

Brenton, a West Seattle High School graduate, who transferred to SPD in 2000 from the La Conner police department, worked his entire career at East Precinct, where spent time on the Anti-Crime Team. Brenton is survived by a wife and two children, 8 and 11.

A procession of patrol cars weaves through Capitol Hill

Officer Sweeney has been released from the hospital and is recovering.

The department has set up a  tip line (206-233-5000) and Crimestoppers and the Seattle Police Officers Guild are offering a joint $21,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

I am so sad to hear she died. I listened to the whole thing on the scanner and as you said it was awful and heartbreaking.

  • joanne

I also listened to the scanner and was in total disbelief . Her voice will haunt me for ever . What have we become to allow this to happen here . I am from NYC , this is common which is sad to say . My heart and prayers go out to his family , police family and to Seattle .

Someone mentioned on Facebook that an officer went down so I came here first.

    Really depressing.

    This is a horrible thing.

You’re doing really good work keeping track of this story Jonah. Better than all the other sites in town. Keep it up!

  • pjp

Did they just nab a suspect in Fremont?

  • Jonah Spangenthal-Lee

There was an incident in Fremont a short time ago, but I haven’t been able to confirm that it was related to last night’s shooting.

  • Troy Meyers

As a resident of the CD and the son of an officer that was killed in the-Line-of-Duty I want to thank you and Scott for your excellent coverage of this incident. You are doing a much better job then the traditional media!

I was visiting family in Seattle when this horrible thing took place. Very sad and my heart goes out to the officer’s family. Seattle is a community kind of City and I hope the support the family will be sure to get will ease their suffering some. Your site was my best site to find out how things stand currently, thanks.

I’m real pissed about this thing. Even though I have some issues with the way alot of cops seem to deal with the public these days, and have had some unfair treatment by them myself I don’t hesitate to say this. These cops were ambushed with no provocation. A human being same as us all, and family man too was murdered. My main points this, all though there was a time when I would’nt help cops I have now changed my mind. I wish I had been there. I own some good weapons and have high level tactical skills with them. I wish I was there to help those 2 poor officers, and if cops are taking rounds at another point in time and I’m around and have my weapons handy then I’m getting in. ON THE COPS SIDE. My personal safety be damned. When my fellow human beings are assaulted by the ‘things’ that did this then I want to be there to help them dammit. Even though their cops I guess most are alright. Evil like this has got to be confronted ruthlessly by the good people out there. Yeah I know some of you are thinking that its easy to put your life on the line and offer help from a computer but you’d probly crap your pants and think alot diffent if you were there. Well, no I would’nt, and yes I’ll be scared, and maybe it won’t make any difference but at least I will have tried to do something. Unlike most people I encounter these days so obsessed with their own personal safety. They makes me sick. I read alot in other posts about how this person or that is ‘scared’ and no longer feels ‘safe’, I’m barfing now, and so what!! I’m scared too and this damned worlds never safe so deal with it and stop hiding behind the 911 system and cops. I’m jumping in on the cops side if I get a chance if I die, I die. Somethings are worth the risk. I’ve had it up to here with this evil kind of b.s. If I’m there and have my weapons handy I’ll jump in anytime cops are taking fire and having a hard time. F–k it! When my fellow human beings are under evil assault I’m going to assist them. Everybody’s gotta die some time and I’m gonna help. FOR SURE!! I really feel for the slain cops family and I’m gonna pray for them. Gonna pray for that rookie cop too that did a hell of job and at least threw down some rounds back at that vermin from hell. And to the vermin, I hope I’m there if you do this again. I’m not backing down and I am going to do my best to stop you if you if you pull this kinda sh-t again. Oh and I can shoot real good too. Good job rookie cop, and even if your alone, you ain’t if I’m in your area.

My thyoughts and prayers go out to the Officers and there famillys. THERE WILL BE NO PEACE UNTIL THE KILLERS ARE FOUND.

  • Capt. Mudd

Yeah! I agree with Ace Cards! Let’s hunt these pukes down and PLANT ‘EM! People always shy away from “the wild west”, well if I’m not mistaken, it is still legal here to draw down and use deadly force if you witness a violent felony going down. Better have a good lawyer though, the court system is too eager to punish vigilantes these days, crooks often have more rights than the victims. Too bad.
It’s high time the good, law abiding, productive members of society lawfully take up arms and make a stand against evil.
Cops are there to protect us, in theory, and it should go both ways if they need it.
An armed society is a polite society.
A Bee stuck in honey does not help the hive.
It is better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.
