Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Contributions of the Day: Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy Confirmed!

Public Disclosure Commission documents reveal that financial backers of Initiative 26, a measure that passed last year making all county offices “nonpartisan,” have also been huge financial supporters of King County Executive candidate Susan Hutchison. Hutchison, a conservative who has contributed exclusively to Republicans (UPDATE: with the exception of city council member Tim Burgess, whose office is nonpartisan but who infamously represented the fundamentalist Christian group Concerned Women for America) and who once served on the board of the the creationist Discovery Institute, was one of the most vocal supporters of the initiative. The measure was widely seen as a Trojan Horse for Republican candidates to make inroads in Democrat-leaning King County.

For example:

Issaquah developer Skip Rowley, a frequent Republican contributor and treasurer for I-26, gave $70,000 to the I-26 effort. He also gave $3,200 to Hutchison’s campaign, and contributed $27,000 to the independent group that produced an infamous attack ad against her opponent Dow Constantine, the King County Leadership Fund.

Cellular magnate Bruce McCaw (whose company manages the luxury home at the center of a major ethics complaint against Hutchison) contributed $5,000 to I-26. He also donated $3,2000 to Hutchison’s campaign, and gave $25,000 to the attack ad committee.

Wireless billionaire John Stanton contributed an astonishing $243,000 to the pro-26 campaign. Although he didn’t give money to the group that produced the hit on Constantine, he did give Hutchison’s campaign $3,200.

John Hennessy, president of the demolition company Nuprecon, contributed $10,000 to the I-26 campaign and $2,400 to Hutchison.

The fact that I-26 donors are anti-Constantine donors are pro-Hutchison donors confirms the conventional wisdom: That this was a GOP ploy to elect conservative candidates in a county that doesn’t ordinarily go for Republicans.

So then why did a bunch of Dems in King County support the change to non-partisan races? Because they’re a bunch of naive suckers who will buy any proposal that seems vaguely more open, more complicated, and more alternative. For the record, I voted against that change because I think party labels help voters organize their choices and express their preferences coherently. Now we’re experiencing incoherence. Gotta give the Republicans credit for smarts that woolly-headed Dems often lack. Enjoy the next 4 years everyone.

This would have been a story if reported during the campaign to change the process to non-partisan, and at that time it was revealed that S.H. was planning this as a larger strategy to run as a “bi-partisan”.

But in this case, we might as well claim that Boeing executives conspire to build airplanes.

As a transplant from the northeast, I find this Washingtonian anti-party crap simply incomprehensible. Good god, the only thing stupider than the blanket primary is the even stupider top two.

As I’ve said many times, Washingtonians are more forthcoming about their sexual orientation, and perhaps even their HIV status, than their party affiliation. I just don’t get it.

(As for me, I’m a Democrat. I’ll keep the other two answers to myself.)

How do we get all these Republicans out of politics in the region? I’m not trolling–I’m perfectly serious.

The fact that with the sheer numerical power that the left has in this region hasn’t electorally crushed the Republicans and their Belleview masters into a bloody smudge in election history is appalling.

If the only reason we have for voters to choose one candidate or another is whether there is a ‘D’ or an ‘R’ after their names… then we have a pretty pathetic electoral system.

I am proud to be a Democrat (most of the time) and I happen to think that candidates like Dow are quite capable of making the case for why their progressive values and support from the Democratic Party are positive reasons for electing them.

If people hear all of that and then choose Hutchison, then we have failed as a Party — to choose the right candidate, to get out our message, etc.

    It’s not that, at all.

It’s the simple fact that the Republicans have been allowed a victory in the game of misdirection and deceiving the overwhelming majority of people that simply aren’t plugged into constant news and electoral cycles.

The greatest thing the Republicans in King County ever did, in this case, is convince voters that they don’t exist.

    @ 13:

Not only partisan races, but partisan registration are the norm in most other states, and it doesn’t stop people from being as fucking “progressive” as they want to be.

Only here in this benighted state, where people think they’re “above” such things, and that parties are somehow dirty or sleazy, or a little past the pull date, do we hear such arguments.

I’m for honest, transparent, good government. I’m also a partisan Democrat. The two are not mutually exclusive.

The “good government” types who think good government is incompatible with partisanship — we call them “goo-goos” — are the ones who have FUBARed the system in our state.

If Hutchison is elected because of that, it’s not because we have “failed as a party.” That’s just the purest bullshit. It’s because the system is rigged against us, and when our candidates win in a “nonpartisan” race, they win DESPITE the system, not because of it.

Nonpartisanship, nonpartisan elections, and moonbat cult gimmicks like instant runoff voting are the enemies of strong, vital, and effective political parties, and thereby, the enemies of good government.

If I didn’t believe that a strong, active, responsive Democratic Party is our best available vehicle for positive political, economic, and social change, I couldn’t make that statement. But I do, and I did.

Isn’t Dow Constantine being just as dishonest when claims to be anti-tax and pro-business?

Its election time folks and all candidates are pro-environment, anti-tax, and pro-congestion relief by this point in the game. It’s all a matter of relative statements and platitudes at this point anyways. Everyone says the same nothings.

So let’s look at the only two metrics we have to measure the candidates. SUSAN HUTCHISON SUPPORTS REF. 71 AND IS AGAINST I-1033. Doesn’t she get any credit for these two stances?

These stances at least put Susan in the political middle third of the electorate.

Its also tough to criticize people for their supporters. Many highly politically active people will ALWAYS give money to their preferred candidate. (Mallahan is getting all sorts of money from people who would never have supported him unless he was running against McGinn.) MAYBE they gave money not because Susan tows their line but because they hate DOW more. (Common sentiment in CAO areas.) Supporting Susan until this point in the election doesn’t make you a right-wing nut. It makes you an average King County voter who lives outside of Seattle.

Republicans supported I-26 because they thought that by being “nonpartisan” and thus more palatable to center-left voters, they could win in King County. Democrats opposed I-26 for the exact same reason. The way I see it, on both sides there were no higher principles at stake than how to win future elections.

Here is a question for your consideration. Imagine an alternate world in which there was no I-26. Susan Hutchison is running for King County executive with an ‘R’ next to her name, but otherwise continues to use the same rhetoric about being a “nonpartisan, nonpolitician”. Dow Constantine has the ‘D’ and is running more or less the same campaign. In this alternative universe, are the poll number substantially different?

Fanatical right-wing secret Republican Dow Constantine is a contributor to GOP State Party Chair Luke Esser??

The exposure of Dow Constantine’s stealth campaign is earth shattering. In the eleventh hour, Dow Constantine is finally unmasked as the Republican in non-partisan clothing.

No wonder he fucked up the budget so tremendously. It was the only way he could advance his anti-choice agenda without outing himself. He HAD to destroy King County government so it was forced to close public health clinics because of “fiscal mismanagement” and “irresponsible spending”.

This is unbelievable, but it all makes so much sense.

@17 – Coming out and stating that you support a referendum that expands rights to gays, lesbians, and old people is one thing, coming out in support of Marriage (full equality) is different.

Saying that we should vote No on 1033 is one thing, but saying it because you actually understand what would happen is different.

The biggest difference between the two candidates – Dow actually has a record. Sure, Susan “fixed” the Seattle Symphony, but what happens when that one time donation dries up? What structural changes were made to help prevent future budget crises there? None.

As for the rest of the Hutch squad – if you want to spread rumors that Dow is a closet, right-wing Republican, this is hardly the place to do it. People here tend to be (at least somewhat) educated voters, and many of us are local political junkies (why else would a Christian Sinderman donation matter?).

Finally, dirt on the Hutch – it’s true! She’s my baby-momma! I was drunk, thought she was a drag queen (ie: a guy), it was all dry, so i figured it was the same thing I’m used to…it’s not my fault! don’t blame me!!!

Didn’t the vote to be nonpartisan come through the county council with Dow voting FOR it? So how is that a plot? Oh, yes, then didn’t we as citizens also vote for it? I thought that was because we cared about getting something done in this county rather than political games that are not too funny. Dow said in debate tonight that he was elected unamiously as chair – isn’t that done by rotation? What an honor – his number was up! His theme people, parks and public safety? Green grass and trees before public safety?? That says it all for me. Did you see him having a press conference with the Sheriff talking about public safety? Nope…maybe it was not time for his rotation there either.
