Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

The Anti-Hutchison Ad

It’s focused on her conservative record, it accuses her of wanting to teach creationism in public schools, it’s paid for by a group called People for Qualified Leadership which has raised about $100,000 from   Planned Parenthood ($15,000), several SEIU locals ($40,000), the Washington State Council of  Firefighters ($5,000), and the liberal group Fuse ($5,000) among others.

The ad is called, simply, “Wink”:

Cheesy, yes. But effective? Discuss.

  • Sarah Palin

The wink seems forced but overall it’s effective. It will atleast force her to keep skirting the issues.

Susan Hutchison is not Sarah Palin.

She was the board chair of the Seattle Symphony and she’s the ED of a shmancy foundation that cuts checks to SAM, the downtown library, Princeton, and the opera.

She’s an old-school Republican not the NASCAR demo.

no, not effective at all. it lets conservatives know they should vote for her while independents have to connect lots of dots…. it doesn’t tell them what she will do TO them that they will hate, or why she’s fucked up.

In contrast jib jab sinking Dow ad is a direct hit.

Dow has to attack her on the symphony; she left a deficit and got government bailouts. Out of control, reckless, irresponsible, go right at her perceived strength stop running away from her by being this generic Democrat, you’ve got to take her down and calling her a closet conservative only works with the dedicated liberals. it’s too vague and not punchy enough for the independents or the apolitical.

She left deficits and took bailouts.

It’s a shame that all that money didn’t buy a better ad. I can’t think of who would be persuaded not to vote for her by that ad, if they weren’t already going to vote for Dow.

It sounds just like a infomercial. It looks that way too. Very clutter and fast.

I would have used the same facts slightly differently – call it “Trust.”

“…says she’s not a conservative Republican, but gave money to Huckabee, Rossi, and Bush.”

“…says she’s not a conservative Republican, but supported teaching creationism through her institute.”

“…says she’s not a conservative Republican, but won’t tell Planned Parenthood her position on abortion.”

“Can you trust what Susan Hutchison says she is?”

@2 I’ve been torn on this comparison myself, Josh. Clearly she runs with a pretty wealthy, old-school Republican crowd. On the other hand, her glaring Republican credentials are things I associate with the christian right, “new-school”, wing of the Republican party (e.g. her rejection of evolution and anti-choice stance, her vague stance on R-71). Sure she’s also touting fiscal conservatism, but so was Sarah Palin. That doesn’t necessarily make her ‘old-school’. She’s also completely unqualified, like Palin, and she gave to Huckabee.

Mainly, this makes me rethink some choices I made for my Publicola contest video (due by midnight tonight, right?), in particular the wink. Damn this collective creative (and mediocre) consciousness.

    Charlie @7,

I think the comparison is sexist.
Why is every GOP woman with a little momentum called Sarah Palin?

Palin played up the folksy, populist, anti-elitist thing.

I have not seen Hutchison do that. The main thing she pushes is law enforcement, a standard conservative plank that’s more Richard Nixon than Sarah Palin.

The Hutchison=Palin thing is lazy. Although, I assume it works.

I have to question the wisdom of this strategy. Dow Constantine ought to have the liberal/Democratic vote sewn up, but what about the votes he still needs to earn? The moderate Democrats who care more about the county’s bread and butter issue such as parks and public safety and busses than they do about teaching creationism (something that the county executive would have no jurisdiction over) or partisan identity. And the moderate Republicans who might be worried about Susan Hutchison’s lack of experience. Actually, I consider myself a mainstream Democrat and I don’t gasp in horror when I hear that Hutchison might be a Republican.

I think that Dow Constantine is a good politician and would be a good executive, and voting for him was an easy decision, but I think that his low poll numbers are a result of some fundamental campaign mistakes, not Susan’s name recognition or whatever other scapegoats they want to use.

@8, Thanks for the reply Josh.

Perhaps you’re right. I feel like I saw other similarities. She has referred to the county government as being ‘arrogant’ and ‘imperial’, but I’ll admit that’s not the same as Palin’s ‘real America’. There are also superficial similarities like their shared careers as TV talking heads, and their promises not to play ‘politics as usual.’

But I guess it is a little lazy . Glad to know you’ll concede that in spite of its laziness, it might work.

@11 Thanks for gettin’ my back. I’ll check out that article.

Yeah, I was also thinking about her ‘meatloaf, not a steak diet’ line, and her vague stories about some farmer who knows better than the government. But I guess that’s actually pretty standard fair when you’re trying to get elected. I feel like she does it a little more often though because she has less substance on hand.

But at her core I’ll accept that she’s been running with an uppercrust crowd for too long, and in her formative years, to really be Sarah Palin.

Dow’s abortion witch-hunt over the course of this election has hurt him bad. People see right through this modern day liberal Red Scare. The average voter knows that the King County executive isn’t on the Supreme Court and can’t overturn Roe v. Wade.

If George Bush couldn’t reverse abortion rights how could Susan Hutchison? I think the average voter can connect that and resent the attack for its distraction away from real issues.

    @16
I don’t know, being anti-choice isn’t a popular position in most of King County. Even if it isn’t relevant to the office it is an issue that can hurt your electoral chances here once voters find out. In Hutchison’s case it is relevant due to Harborview (which is owned and partially funded by the county), the County health clinics, and the funding the County provides to clinics run by organizations like Planned Parenthood. She doesn’t need to overturn Roe v. Wade to do harm, just to make sure nothing the county touches is involved in reproductive health except in the most limited way possible.

She claims to be concerned about G’vment, but missed 8 elections
She claims not to know much about Huckabee and her donation, but is on tape endorsing the man the year before.
She claims that all election ethics vioaltions have been dropped, yet there are 80 plus active violations being investigated
She claims to be non-political, but has only given to candidates from ONE party.
She claims to have saved the Symphony, but found a single donor to cover the debt till she left.
    She claims…
And so one.. you can fit a lot of these in 30 seconds without dropping big bombs…

Erode the cred she gained by reading the news to us nightly.

@2, 7, 8: The reason she has been compared/linked to Palin is because she helped host a fundraiser for Palin where she was called “Our states own Sarah Palin”.

@16 The position of King County Executive has everything to do with family planning, health services, abortion rights, etc., because in King County 9 family planning clinics that serve around 20,000 low-income families were almost shut down last year. Dow fought to keep them open.

The fact that voters like @16 are refusing to acknowledge that the rights of women across our state is much bigger than Roe vs. Wade is a major reason why Hutchison is even in this race.

When 3 out of the last 5 King County Executives have gone on to become Governor- it’s worth educating voters that Susan Hutchison has donated THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of dollars to not only anti-choice candidates but ANTI-BIRTH CONTROL candidates!

Getting a bit outdated now, but thanks to #11 for the clarification. However, I feel that my criticism stands; Dow Constantine himself has, at debates and at other events, focused far too much energy on trying to “expose” Susan Hutchison as a conservative Republicans. The same criticism can be leveled at the producers of this ad.

Dow should be exposing Susan as an unprepared leader who has not been able to produce concrete solutions to the county’s pressing problems. And, regardless of how you may personally feel about the abortion issue, I am confident that the voters who are actually on the fence are not going to be voting on the basis of abortion. So I think that focusing on abortion is also an unwise use of Dow Constantine’s resources.

#22 – thanks for the easy to explain explanation for the pro-choice discussion.

To all: People are asking who Susan Hutchison is …. King County voters may support a republican IF that republican has some ideas or values that match ours. Dow needs to define Susan – cause she’s not defining herself.

And to all of you who say Susan Hutchison is not our county’s Sarah Palin – sorry to disappoint, but she is. As a woman I didn’t think this ad was sexist.

Great ad – it will help Dow win.

“they are not fighting hard for our values.”

    Don’t you mean your values?

Again, who is this collective ‘we’ you have chosen to speak for?

Of course you don’t, the sexism charge can only be leveled when it’s politically convenient for you.

cvbin (6.) and Seattle Greg (20.) both had a more effective approach. The ad could have gone after her credibility to greater effect.

This ad sounds cheesy and salesy. It does get the “consevative” message out but at an instinctual level it raises questions about the credibility of the announcer rather than Hutchison herself.

when she winks like that, it makes her look like lucille bluth mistaking the drowsy-eye for a winky-face.

no, not effective at all. it lets conservatives know they should vote for her while independents have to connect lots of dots…. it doesn't tell them what she will do TO them that they will hate, or why she's fucked up.

In contrast jib jab sinking Dow ad is a direct hit.

Dow has to attack her on the symphony; she left a deficit and got government bailouts. Out of control, reckless, irresponsible, go right at her perceived strength stop running away from her by being this generic Democrat, you've got to take her down and calling her a closet conservative only works with the dedicated liberals. it's too vague and not punchy enough for the independents or the apolitical.

She left deficits and took bailouts.
