Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Extra Fizz: Anti-Constantine Group Raised $162K

The King County Leadership Fund, which has been running ads opposed to King County Executive candidate Dow Constantine, has finally filed reports with the state Public Disclosure Commission revealing how much money they have to spend against Constantine, and where it’s coming from. However, they haven’t yet filed reports detailing how much they’ve spent—a requirement within 24 hours of the ads’ airing on TV.

Here’s the breakdown:

The Affordable Housing Council (the political arm of the Building Industry Alliance of Washington), gave $50,000 to the KCLF.

The Eastside Business Alliance, a conservative group affiliated with Bellevue developer and light-rail opponent Kemper Freeman, gave $27,000 to the KCLF and $800 to Constantine opponent Susan Hutchison.

Kemper Holdings LLC, Freeman’s development company, gave $25,000 to the KCLF and $800 to Hutchison.

The Calportland Company, which owns Glacier Northwest, whose gravel mine on Maury Island Constantine has long opposed, gave $20,000 to the KCLF.

Cell-phone magnate Bruce McCaw, whose company controls the controversial luxury home that houses Hutchison’s campaign headquarters, and his wife, Jolene, gave a total of $25,000 to the KCLF and $1,600 to Hutchison.

Developer Martin Selig gave $10,000 to the KCLF and $800 to Hutchison.

Quadrant Homes gave $5,000 to the KCLF.

Most of the same folks (BIAW, Eastside Business Alliance, Kemper Freeman, McCaw, ….) are writing the checks for David Doud’s increasingly unethical campaign for Port Commission. The reason? The developers have their eyes on the Port’s prime real estate.

The Affordable Housing Council is not the BIAW’s PAC. It is the Master Builders Association of King & Snohomish Counties. The two Political Action Committees are entirely separate. The AHC endorsed Ron Sims for Governor in 2004. The Washington Affordable Housing Council (the PAC of the Building Industry Association of Washington) supported Dino Rossi. Not the same.
