Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Well, At Least One Seattle Times Ed Board Member Doesn't Like Hutchison

I was on KUOW this morning with Seattle Times editorial board member Lynne Varner. We were talking abbout Susan Hutchison and Varner said Hutchison’s GOP allegiances weren’t a problem, it’s more that Hutchison is being disingenuous about it.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s like the old Watergate adage, it’s not the crime, it’s the coverup. Being a Republican isn’t a crime (although this is King County). But seriously, Hutchison’s evasion is the problem.

And I said so on this morning’s show, seconding Varner, pointing out that Hutchison isn’t only being disingenuous, she’s being dishonest. Last night on KCTS , when asked why she donated to a hyper conservative like Mike Huckabee, she told an inncoent-ish story about first hearing of Huckabee in the fall of 2007 from a political friend. (Hutchison wasn’t political she said because she was just coming off being a journalist). The friend, she said, told her about Huckabee and invited her to a Huckabee lunch. Hutchison said she didn’t go to the lunch, but wrote a check for $500 anyway.

Okay, that’s weird in itself: She wrote a check for $500 based on a friend’s recommendation without seeing Huckabee speak?

Yep. It is weird. In fact, its not true. She’d already seen Huckabee speak. And she already had a high opinion of him. Hutchison emceed a 2006 dinner for the Wahsington Policy Center, the local conservative think tank, where Huckabee was the keynote speaker.

hutchhuck

A year later, in September 2007, Hutchison emceed the WPC’s dinner again (Jeb Bush was the keynote.) And at that dinner, Hutchison kicked off her speech with a rave about Huckabee. Here’s the video. Go to the seven minute mark and you’ll hear her heap praise on Huckabee.

“As you know if you’ve been here before, our speakers inform, inspire and predict the future. Anyone who was here last year is not surprised that Mike Huckabee is perfroming well in the presidential race for the Republican primary. You may recall that last year Mike warned of the infrastructure problems in his own state and all through the country and sure enough we had a tragedy in Minnesota and now infrastructure is one of the biggest issues that we face today. And that started last year. We were informed by Mike Huckabee.”

Hutuchison’s $500 donation to Huckabee came two months later, in November 2007.

Varner must have cringed when I told this story. The Seattle Times endorsed Hutchison this afternoon.

Nice photo, Josh. She looks like Tony Ventrella has his long snout somewhere it shouldn’t be.

Why don’t you guess the vote, not that the vote matters.

    Here’s my speculation:

    Ryan: Hutchison
    Frank: Hutchison
    Billy: Hutchison
    Bobby: Hutchison
    Carolyn: Hutchson
    Joni: Constantine
    Lance: Constantine
    Bruce: Hutchison
    Kate: Hutchison
    Lynne: Constantine

I seriously don’t know where all you Susan Hutchison supporters on Slog come from. I interact with at least 50-100 people a day and I have yet to meet a single Hutchison supporter. I know lots of folks who know her and none of them are voting for her.
I suspect you Dow-haters are on her campaign team? Because really…who’s the only good choice for King County? Dow. Seriously.
I have yet to hear one single skill, other than public speaking, that Susan Hutchison can bring to the Executive position.
She runs a foundation not a non-profit. Big difference. Non-profits involve the community. Foundations have few staff (she might be the only one) and they give away money. This is very nice but has nothing to do with public process or leadership.

Oops. I meant Publicola not Slog. Doy.

Huh, Josh did not mention that Mike O’Brien into the show to give his tolling soundbite, his opponent is the only one promoting blah, blah. Then O’Brien. was pressed on his opinion, that he thinks roads should be tolled. He then started babbling about zones, and such, really struggled to make practical sense and apply the concept in Seattle. Josh later bailed him out by citing the state study and the “main stream thought”.
The two problems with the “main stream thought” is that O’Brien stuggled to define it in any meaningful way; and there were no Seattle examples given (because few exist in Seattle).
He was not a very good caller for a radio program, nevermind that he is even a candidate for public office.

How do we pay for more mass transit (other than charging riders all the costs)?

That’s a fine bit of reporting, Josh. Facts, links provided, directly addressing an factual assertion made by a candidate. There may be hope for journalism, after all. :-) If you’ve not read the article in this month’s Atlantic on the “new journalism” … find it. Excellent piece.

I wonder how Susan Hutchison reconciles her religious beliefs with her lying.

@Sarina – I’m guessing that Ms. Hutchison’s supporters are in the outlying conservative portions of King County (everything except Seattle, pretty much).

I was at a reception with Pierce County R friends. The husband, who is a strong R, but knows that I am D, asked about Dow’s campaign. I told him the latest polls were leaning to her and he was shocked. He said that to him the choice was clear – in tough times you want the one with experience and could not imagine anyone supporting her. Hope other Rs feel the same.

He also works at Fort Lewis as was shocked by me telling of her plans to call the Marines to Howard Hanson. He noted there only is a small reserve unit and “certainly not enough for the dam!”

Dow’s campaign is suffering from an intellectual deficit. He’s trying to run on his record of “public service,” but at the same time claim he hasn’t been a part of the problem.

Dow’s campaign is chock full of conflicts. He hired all progressive liberalati old hand insiders instead of bringing in new young blood. He says he’s not the incumbent, but he acts like he’s running to fill Ron Sims’ shoes.

On top of all the lack of a winning campaign strategy, Dow continues to make tactical mistakes at every turn. He’s being completely out-campaigned by Hutchison, and getting angry on the stump instead of staying collected.

If he loses, which looks increasingly likely, it’ll be because he never made a smart case for his candidacy.
