Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Meanwhile, in the Eighth District

Lest you think we here at PubliCola are single-mindedly obsessed with city and county  races, here’s some promising fundraising news for Suzan DelBene. DelBene is running against three-term congressman Rep. Dave Reichert (R-8, WA)—Seattle’s Eastside suburbs.

So far, Reichert has raised $753,099 to DelBene’s $477,851. However, federal election records reveal that in the last month, DelBene’s fundraising has eclipsed Reichert’s: $255,555 to Reichert’s $215,967. And when you look at cash on hand (meaning: The amount of money the candidates actually have to spend), DelBene is cleaning up, with $614,862 to Reichert’s $333,403.

DelBene, a vice president at Microsoft, has contributed $130,000 of her own money to her campaign (and, as some of my conservative fans have noted since this post was published, pledged another $350,000 of her own money). The election is in November 2010.

    What am I missing?

You state that Delbene has raised: $477,851
But, she has this on hand; $614,862

How does she have more on hand than she has raised?

…to Kenneth’s point…the title “VP” has become almost as ubiquitous as “MBA.” It doesn’t mean what people think it means anymore.

Which gets us to the point that Mallahan is probably best described as a middle manager. There’s a perception that he’s in upper-level management at Tmobile, and as I understand it, that’s not the case.

He’s the guy who can beat Reichart. He’s a proven moderate, pisses off his friend just as much as his enemies and has a Biden-esque inability to stay on message. We need somebody who can go toe-to-toe with Reichart and who has significant legislative experience. Not only is Ross the Democrat who can win, he’d be the best Representative for the folks in the 8th district in DC.

    Gomez, isn’t obvious? I’m a professional blog commenter. ;-)

    My point is two-fold:
    A) I’ll bet that a majority of families in Seattle who bought a house 10-15 years ago have $250k or more in home equity.

    B) The term “VP” is overused in Corporate America. In fact, I think in Mallahan’s bio, he even talks about a title they made up for him, something like VP of customer happiness or some such. He’s basically a middle manager.

I’m not arguing that he shouldn’t be considered wealthy, but I think there’s a misconception that this guy is very wealthy. He’s not.

Perhaps before judging her as just “another” VP, you should all try and meet her. I was very skeptical of another microsoftie runni9ng- until I met her. She has real gravitas, presense, and a real record of accomplishment, and not as some “middle manager.” Give her a chance, and unless your are a right wing idealogue who likes Congressmen with nice hair and single digit IQ’s, you will be impressed.

BTW, it took him 17 years to figure it out when he had all that evidence in a drawer. Why not ask, “what took you so long?”

Well, this thread is about Suzann, and she does control a large P&L, but my guess is Operations Strategy, which would encompass all up TMobile operations, is probably fairly large since the company brings in over $20 billion a year.

    @ Timothy

You’re not painting an accurate picture Suzan DelBene or Joe Mallahan. While it’s true that in many industries there’s many with the title VP (branch managers in retail banking for example), that’s not true at Microsoft or T-Mobile.

Suzan DelBene is a former Microsoft Corporate VP. That would have put her well in the top 100 of a 93,000 employee organization. She was also a member of the team that founded Drugstore.com and she was CEO of another startup Nimble Technologies. Suzan’s husband Kurt is still a CVP at Microsoft. Ross Hunter was a General Manager – the rank just below CVP and above Senior Director at Microsoft.

I believe Darcy was a manager – significantly lower in the Microsoft hierarchy.

T-Mobile has ~35,000 employees. Last I checked less than 70 had the title of VP or above. Most of his years at T-Mobile, Joe reported directly to the CEO, COO, or CFO. The strategy teams Mallahan managed were usually ~20 Ph.D/MBA types looking for opportunities to significantly improve T-Mobile’s results. I once heard a T-Mobile leader refer to opportunities with a $100 million change in revenue or EBITDA as being on thesmall side for Joe’s team. Joe has led large cross-departmental initiatives at T-Mobile with teams as large as 500 (at peak).

At Chicago Tile, Joe was CEO of a company that had 200 employees.

I seriously doubt either took out a mortgage on their homes to make a financial contribution but I don’t disagree that there are many who make incomes closer to the median that may have enough home equity to borrow $250k.

Nice spin Tim, but nothing close to the truth.

    13. Let’s say you throw 3% down on a $250K home and finance the rest on a 6.5% mortgage. Factoring in a generously low 2% in property taxes and not even factoring in closing costs and the like, you’re paying about $1828 a month. That doesn’t even include utilities (always more expensive on a home you own yourself… and which includes utilities a landlord would typically cover for renters out there), maintenance and other assorted fees and taxes unique to home ownership.

Considering that someone making $30K is going to struggle to pay more than $1,000 a month in rent, let alone a mortgage in that amount plus the additional costs, let alone $1828 a month in mortgage PLUS the additional costs… I’m not sure how owning a $250K home isn’t that big a deal unless you are filthy fucking rich.

And it’s nice if you got in on this housing market 15 years ago when homes were cheap and the market value had yet to skyrocket, Timothy, but most Seattle residents weren’t that fortunate. So trying to play off someone who flips and picks up $250K homes like it’s no big deal as some sort of standard working class Seattlite is either disingenuous or ivory-tower level ignorance on your part.

You’re either rich or a long timer who got lucky by buying low in the early 90′s, and disclosing that may firebomb any appearance of objectivity on your part in this discussion, so I can’t blame you for not being forthright.
