Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Mallahan Backs Out of Music Forum

Mayoral candidates Joe Mallahan and Mike McGinn were both scheduled to attend a forum put on by the local chapter of the recording academy—a music industry group that lobbies on music and nightlife issues.

McGinn released a nightlife policy paper last month and has been supported by the music community, which held a fundraiser for him at the Crocodile on September 30 featuring folks like the Presidents and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana fame.

Mallahan and McGinn were supposed to take the stage at 3:30 today at EMP, but Mallahan called at 2:45 and canceled, according to a source in the music business.

Mallahan campaign spokeswoman’s Charla Neuman’s mailbox is full. I’ve got a message into Mallahan campaign chair Tina Podlodowski for an explanation.

UPDATE:

Podlodowski says:

We had a last minute scheduling issue, and we actually called early this morning to let folks know.  It’s just about killing us to have to cancel, but it’s the sad truth.  I know we’ll have a group of people mad at us that might be leaning McGinn’s way anyway—hence the need for us to be there and let Joe have a shot at convincing them. We have profusely apologized.  We will take our lumps for canceling—and deserve them. I know the organizers are upset, and I don’t blame them.  Again, we profusely apologize.

Podlodowski, who acknowledged that the EMP event had been scheduled for some time, would not say (when asked directly) what the scheduling conflict was, saying only that “we deserve our lumps on this … I can imagine the tweets now.”

what is this etiquette of reporters where candidates just say “schduling conflict!” and there’s no follow up:

    “so what’s this other event?”

it’s one thing if it’s true, and another thing if it’s not.

The ironic thing is that Mallahan released some decent cultural policies recently. Even though they totally ripped off McGinn, it was good to see, and made me think well of him. This move makes me think they were just lip service and that music, technology and culture are completely unimportant to him. Without a better explanation from Tina P, it’s all we can assume.

    A punk move for sure.

    @9 Meinert…

music, technology and culture are completely unimportant to him.

    Here’s what’s crazy about Mallahan.

He’s actually a no issue candidate. He frequently accuses McGinn of being a one issue canidate. But, he himself has no support other than the fact the people THINK he supports the tunnel. Nearly everyone who supports Mallahan is primarily doing so on the tunnel issue.

But, Mallahan has no record of having taken stances on anything. He has no issues on which his positions are known. There’s absolutely no way to know how he feels about a single issue that he hasn’t raised in the context of raising money and trying to gain the office of Mayor.

So, as to nightlife? The best we can say is that his interests align with money and power. We have no other record by which to judge him. Two examples spring to mind; the tunnel and the Burke Gilman. Both issues put him squarely in the camp of him aligning with monied interests.

What are his principles? Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing.

The saying is the devil you know over the devil you don’t. But in this instance, the power and monied interests have turned that on its head, and are choosing the devil the don’t know, but think they can control.

How’d that work for the Right with GWB?

If I was Mallahan, I wouldn’t attend either. What’s the point? The “music community” has already indicated whom it supports. And who wants to listen to a bunch of punks (both kinds) clamoring for additional subsidies from the city when its resources are already overtaxed in this environment?

Thank you PublicoIa for posting this. I was just at the event, and at first I was pissed at Mallahan. Turns out, I now know who I am going to vote. Before hand I was down the middle of the road, because while I liked McGinn’s policies on music, I was pro tunnel – and I think Joe is sensible. But, since Mallahan didn’t show up, McGinn had lots of opportunity to explain his anti-tunnel reasons and many other policies beyond just music, which were very sound (pardon the pun). It was great. Their were a couple hundred people there and many West Seattle folks who vocally said this rationale helped them. I am solidly for McGinn now. Thanks Joe!

The burning question is why he ‘needs’ to keep canceling these appearances. What, do his schedule planners lack foresight?

Really, Mallaspam’s ducking at this point. Why he’s ducking these events is the $64,000 question.

How does Tina think this makes Mallaspam look good, canceling out of multiple events like this? These sort of faceplants are not what their campaign needs right now. She’s further butchering this already somewhat-butchered campaign. I sure as hell wouldn’t pay someone like her to run a campaign if this sort of crap is what I’d get out of her.

Honor your commitments, Phone Spam, if you want to win this election. You’ve got a teeming mass of undecideds out there and this won’t sell them.

What am I missing? What is the rationale “helping” people from West Seattle? I like Mike on almost everything else, but in what way is the central issue of his campaign… “surface/transit”… anything other than “Fuck You, West Seattle/Georgetown/Burien/White Center/Seatac/etc.”? Why is the Stranger, which once opposed the Seattle Commons park plan on the grounds that it would create a nice big lawn for the rich people who’ll live in the pricey condos around the park… so hell bent to make the waterfront nicer and quieter place for the rich people who will live in the pricey new condos and eat in the pricey new restaurants that will go in? Surface/Transit is complete bullshit. EVERY argument I’ve heard for “surface/transit” is COMPLETE BULLSHIT! The Embarcadero freeway comparison is one made by someone who has never spent any time in the bay area. The Embarcadero was a never-completed Golden Gate bridge feeder, not one of only two major north-south arterials through the penninsula. The “when the viaduct was closed in August the traffic wasn’t so bad” argument ignores the fact that August is when most people take vacation, and we were well-warned that this would be a good time to take one. Why does the Stranger ignore every other closure of the viaduct and the West/South Seattle traffic clusterfucks that ensue? The tunnel plan sucks, surface/transit is WAY worse, and I don’t see pitting Seattle neighborhoods against each other to make nice for developers as “leadership”. Is Mike backing off of this crap? Did I miss something? I’m all ears. Or eyes, as the case may be.

First, the tunnel is not the central issue of McGinn’s campaign, but it seems to be the only issue Mallahan supporters can talk about. For sure, McGinn has defined this campaign and Mallahan has no ideas.

And now the City says the funding approach for the tunnel won’t work – meaning, much like the monorail, that the tunnel will eventually not be built no matter who is mayor.

Sexy projects like the monorail and the tunnel sound great. But in the final analysis they don’t seem to be real transportation solutions and aren’t affordable. And while we’re farting around arguing about this shit, cities like Portland are doing it with less expensive, more practical ideas that actually get built.

One thing to note, Meinert, is that with the monorail the county and the state were not involved. Seattle was on its own with funding and planning.

Since 99 is a state highway, the state will have a hand in funding and planning the viaduct’s replacement, even if the City is expected to foot some of the bill. It’s not like the monorail situation.
