Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

Campaign Finance Update

As has been widely reported, mayoral candidate Joe Mallahan reported being approximately $95,000 in the hole as of the middle of October.

However, that debt includes expenses and obligations totaling about $100,000 in TV commercials, so Mallahan won’t be hurting in the final days of the campaign. His opponent Mike McGinn, who has about $17,000 on hand, is spending $55,000 on cheaper cable-only TV ads, according to the Seattle Times.

Mallahan isn’t the only candidate who’s going into the general election in the red. City Attorney Tom Carr, who has spent more than $20,000 on mailings and banner ads in the Seattle Times, is $941 in the red; his opponent, Pete Holmes, has $9,589 on hand. Position 2 challenger David Ginsberg is $2,976 in the red; his opponent, incumbent Richard Conlin, has $29,612 on hand. And port commission candidate Max Vekich is $6,865 in the hole, although that doesn’t account for an independent expenditure that unions are reportedly planning to make on his behalf; his opponent, has $12,527 on hand.

This does not inspire me to believe him when he says he can ‘drive efficiencies” and save Seattle from a budget-deficit crisis.

And what % of those expenses are for consultants — who he says he’ll be cutting out of his government? Actions speak louder than words.

Turn those dollars into jobs now?

The has groundbreaking sometime in 2011, so it’s possible that it would be close at hand. timeline

However, the timeline also details “transit enhancements” that were to begin last year – and didn’t. Come to think of it, the Gov did veto the financing authority to protect transit service hours.

Well, hard to expect logical transportation policies from a woman who’s been driven around by a chauffeur for the last 16 years.

For the new mayor to be taken seriously they’ll have to take a page out of the prisoner hand book for survival: beat the crap out of someone the first day or become someones gal Friday… If you know what I mean.

Would be interesting to look closer into Doud and Albro’s money sources. We know Doud is funded at the $200,000 level by his boss (Wallace, east side development magnate) and his boss’ Republican pals.

Interesting that Albro is significantly self-funded – $25,000 of his funds are loans or contributions from himself and his wife.

The majority of the rest of Albro’s funds come from a surprisingly long list of port contractors, lease holders, lawyers, consultants and other interests compiled by the folks at Port Reform. I just counted 111 port interests on Albro’s campaign roll. And that was from before the 10/13 reporting deadline.
