Viva La Cola!

Founded in January 2009, PubliCola is a blog about Seattle written by journalists who are dedicated to non-partisan, original daily reporting that prioritizes a balanced approach to news. Started by longtime local editor and award-winning reporter Josh Feit, PubliCola is the first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol.

PubliCola was off and running. In June 2009, PubliCola hired another award-winning journalist, super-sourced Seattle city hall reporter Erica C. Barnett.

People were afraid that blogging would change journalism. Instead, we believe journalism can change blogging. Twenty-first century journalism may look and feel different, and yes Erica isn't afraid to get cranky, but we're committed to making sure online news still delivers independent, reliable, even-keeled coverage. And most of all, we're committed to making sure the coverage sparks honest civic debate.

Bringing you cola for the people, PubliCola is named after Publius Valerius PubliCola, the alias for the authors of the Federalist Papers—the original bloggers.

The first online-only news site in state history to get media credentials to cover the state capitol and Seattle city hall, PubliCola has been called a “must-read” by the Seattle Post Intelligencer and a hot “New Media Mover and Shaker” by Seattle Magazine—which also cited our own Erica C. Barnett as the city's No. 1 news nerd.

King 5/Survey USA Poll: Constantine Slips

KING 5 released a poll on the King County Executive’s race today.

The poll, which has a 4.4 percent margin on error, shows former KIRO TV anchor Susan Hutchison at 47 percent to King County Council Member Dow Constantine’s 42 percent.

The most recent KING 5 polls also had Huthcison at 47, but had Constantine closer at 44 percent.

    This is a frightening poll.

    But I’m not surprised. When I tell people they should vote for Dow, they ask me “Why?”

    Not because they’re ill-informed, but because the only issues talk they hear is from Hutchison. All they hear Dow doing is talking about how Hutchison is a Republican.

    Time for issues, I think.

    Surprising that Hutchinson is taking a third of the liberal vote, and is also winning younger voters. Seems like Constantine isn’t solidifying his base.

    Or just maybe we’re not doing our work. Phone bank for Dow or we’ll end up with Hutch and have no one to blame but ourselves. Constantine is working 24/7 and he’s done his homework and is ready to go. Let’s support him.

    Spelling error, obv…I would agree, and my biggest grief with Dow is that he has completely stopped talking about the issues. He has HA/Seattle Weekly/Stranger/Publicola scouraging around trying to find old footage of Susan telling people to read, instead of talking about vision for King County. He has done nothing in terms of talking about his forward looking vision for King County.

    This is basically the definition of statistical noise. I basically agree with the analysis here, but it’s innumerate journalism to write as if a small-sample poll going from 44% to 42% suggests any change in standing of any kind.

    @3 Sorry to disappoint you, but I am part of that liberal base that is not thrilled about Constantine. Not that I would ever vote for Hutchison, mind you, but with some exceptions, I don’t think that Constantine has a great record on issues that matter to progressives. The exceptions — his environmental record, his pro-choice position, and his support for gay and lesbian rights — are very important. But, for instance, I fail to see anything very impressive about his record in other areas of civil rights. Moreover, I don’t think that he has been forceful or courageous enough to really take on Eyman in a sustained manner. Nor do I think that Constantine has a good record as a manager, either with respect to his work on the KCC (where, both before and after he became Chair, they failed to respond to the structural budget problems in a timely or effective manner) or with respect to running his own campaign. (How did he let himself become vulnerable to the ethics complaint? Regardless of the merits of that complaint, he should never have let himself get put in that position.) Hutchison is certainly disingenuous about her conservatisim, and I don’t think she is well qualified, but she has come out against I-1033 and in favor of R-71. She is even talking about doing nothing to change the County-supported family planning centers. Again, these aren’t reasons to support her, but she at least is on record on these matters. But my main point is that whoever is elected will be spending most of his or her time downsizing the King County government. That is the harsh reality. There was a time when I thought that Constantine could have been counted on to handle that in a more humane and just manner. But frankly I’m not so sure now in light of how he has handled layoffs and health benefits at the KCC. I voted for Phillips in the primary, and I am more convinced than ever that he was the better choice. But please feel free to show me the errors of my thinking.

  • The Dow is Down

    Dow only made it through the primary by trashing his chief rival, and no, I don’t mean Hutchison.

    Ask Cynara, she worked for the guy that Big Labor crushed, or is that super secret? Oops.

    Part of the ethics investigation agaist Dow should involve the spending that got him here.

    But hey, who really wants to do real journalism when you can report on polls, press releases, and the latest gossip?

    Ross hosted a fundraiser for Dow at which he said something like “I know a lot of the people in this room can afford to give $800.” And Ross is a self admitted jerk, so I doubt he feels there was anything too untoward in the primary if he’s willing to help Dow.

    1. I’m surprised no one asked, Michael:

    Soooooo… when people ask you why they ought to vote for Dow, what do you tell them?

    @11:

    I tell them that he’s the only one with the requisite experience to be running the County, the cuts that he would make would be done carefully, not just “across the board” as his rival calls for, and that he’s the only one with any idea of how government budgets work. And while Susan has great hair, platitudes aren’t a governing philosophy, and she should go back to kayaking.

    Or something along those lines.

    SurveyUSA finally posted the full breakdown.

    Interestingly enough, the Stranger’s target 18-34 demographic is firmly pro-Hutchinson. Males are also firmly sliding pro-Hutchinson. That surprised me.

    @13/15

    Yeah, I can play the attack dog one on one pretty well, I like to think (although Andrew Lewis really puts all to shame). I have just been frustrated by a campaign that seems without any clear direction anymore.

    As for the poll – Males think she’s a MILF. Although…does she have kids? I know that some of the guys working on her campaign are pretty hot…and the sins I would do to them…but…well…okay, now I’m off topic.
